Breakout TE's (1 Viewer)

So I was drafting from the #1 spot, and I wanted a top 5 TE at the 4.12/5.01 turn (not unreasonable and it has happened in 100% of the mocks I have been in)

So my draft is going well until Anontio Gates is taken at 3.04 (WTF!)....and then an incredible run of TE's went....Clark, Finley, V.Davis, Witten, Gonzalez, and Celek all went before 4.12!

So I did what any good fantasy player does, buck the trend and grab value. I took J.Best and C.Ochocinco and waited on TEs....I was pissed that my money league would go that wheels off(its a good league) but was happy with the value it let me have.

I got John Carlson at 13.01. I think he was the most likely of that bottom bunch to somehow end up in the top 5 TE's....any others that someone might suggest? I figure that plenty of us missed out on the top TE's, and need to find that breakout candidate.

My list right now:

J.Carlson Sea- you are at the mercy of this bad offense

J.Gresham Cin - little scary to rely on a rookie

G.Olsen - has the talent but has been way inconsistant and now ha martz who hates te's

any others that might surprise?

I took Zach Miller with my 14th pick right before defense and a kicker in my 10 team league and I am super happy with it. I passed on all of those dudes and I even passed on Tony Gonzalez which I could have had super late also, I'd rather Zach Miller this season. Dude is a stud, you see his touchdown yesterday? beastin it.

Fasano has looked good for the Dolphins and so has the 5th round pick out of Illinois on the Rams. I am personally a fan of Fred Davis. Dude has alot of talent and McNabb has a history of passing to his TE.

Miller burned a lot of us last year with his crappy start. I'm not even considering him, Campbell upgrade helps but the Raiders are still a joke of a team. They give hope every preseason then tank hard during the regular season.

I've been able to land Keller in the final rounds of a few drafts as my #2 TE. For a guy that was the #1 fantasy TE in last year's postseason he seems to be getting forgotten quite a bit.

You can get Ben Watson as your TE2 late late in the draft or on the waiver wire, but Cleveland does not have any great receiving options, he's getting a lot of targets and more importantly TDs even though it's pre-season. He is my TE sleeper, the problem is he is my TE2 not a guy who he is going to get Witten or Gates numbers but 4-6 TDs and 500-600 yards is not unlikely.

oh, and I don't remember daniels on your list -- he's got a shot at top 5, although I wouldn't call him a sleeper.

Todd Heap is a guy going either very late or not drafted at all BUT as you saw against the giants hes healthy , looking like Flaccos favorite target still and he looks great. I just dropped Carlson for him as a backup for my Starter Finley. When Heap is healthy he is a top 10 TE. So if he stays healthy you can get a top 10 TE for nothing.

ends in the 2010 draft it seemed as if they were getting ready for life without veteran Todd Heap. Heap's record setting performance in last night's game against the Giants seemed to say, "not so fast."

Heap, a ten-year veteran set two personal preseason records during the Ravens victory over the Giants. Heap had six receptions for 69 yards and one touchdown.

A healthy Heap stated, "It brings life into you when you feel this good in the preseason." The comment must be music to the ears of the Ravens coaching staff.

Heap had good stats last season with 53 receptions for 593 yards and six touchdowns, but he was banged up by season's end. The Ravens did not have a tight end to support Heap last year and the team needed him to take a high number of snaps which impacted his health and performance.

The Ravens think that having rookie tight ends Ed Dickson and Dennis Pitta available will allow Heap to have an even better season this year by allowing him to take less snaps and play healthy.

After last night's performance it seems inevitable that the cheers for "Heeeeeap" will ring through M&T Bank Stadium quite often this year.

Somebody mentioned Cooley...seems like every time I read a D.C. area beat writer or 'skins blogger they're talking about Chris is the better blocker. I see folks toting Davis as a sleeper pick based on last year's production, but that is not the impression I get out D.C. Shanny kept Tony Scheffler off the field a lot because he couldn't block. Looking at McNabb's history of relying TEs, I could see him being a top ten TE easily.

Was having a decent rookie campaign before he got hurt; developed a decent rapport with Stafford, seemed to be getting better as season progressed.It was a pretty severe knee injury, correct? This month he has been sitting out practices on occasion and used sparingly in games. Scheffler was signed, and while its known he isn't much of a blocker, he does have the receiving part down.Long term I love Pettigrew, but I think this year he is going to have to bust his butt just to get back to where he was a year ago.

I've got the same problem. All of the TEs went earlier than i had expected. I was sitting to pick Zach Miller, but he was sniped before my pick at the #10 spot. I ended up with Shiancoe, who I think will get more receptions given that Rice is injured. My only concern would be how Favre meshes with his new WRs. Camarillo is a good guy for short pases. Walker is uh past his prime.

Going back to your question... My list of breakout TEs is:

1. Zach Miller

2. Cooley

3. Hernandez

4. Cooley

If that knee holds up, the guy will put up great numbers in that offense...his draft spot is based obviously on the risk of remaining healthy. I just like his upside over several of the guys going around him.

I agree on Owen Daniels, but I would really like to see James Casey out there. There was so much talk about him last season, and from what I heard Kubiak said he had a good camp.

My point was that after he missed out on the elite TE's during the early run, it would have been wise to draft Miller at some point. I wasn't suggesting that he'd be available on the WW.

Shawn Nelson should be able to put up numbers once he gets back from his 4 game suspension. You won't even need to draft him; he'll be on the waiver wire.

Just look thru Buffalo's depth chart at TE; there is no one. Stupar is the starter right now and he is a nobody. Nelson has the size and athleticism to be a threat from the TE spot, something the Bills have sorely been lacking. Their last decent pass catching TE would have to be Jay Riemersma.

With Trent Edwards loving the short passing game, Nelson could see plenty of targets when he returns

I also like Chris Cooley this year alot. Fred Davis went ahead of him in my draft yesterday. Cooley was a steal for me in the late rounds. You know McNabb loves his TE (Brent Celek last season) and will get him involved. WAS also has limited talent at WR. Cooley is the better blocker so he should be the starter in Shanahan's offense.

I read that Kub is going to limit the amount of plays Daniels is on the field to about 20-25 in week 1... so it sounds like his knee is STILL not 100%

Ben Watson couldn't put up fantasy points when he had Tom Brady as QB, I can't see him turning into even a decent fantasy option in Cleveland.

Couldn't disagree more. Miller didn't play badly last year; he just didn't get in the end zone. He has good chemistry with Campbell, and even Gradkowski is a huge upgrade over Russell. The team has a new OC who who has a proven track record of success. Miller will be the number one passing target on his team and he will get in the end zone more this year because the offense will be better. If you can get him in round 8 or 9 that's a steal.

+1I took Daniels in Rd 9 and picked up Heath Miller off the WW to hedge and fill in early season. I figured with the upside that Daniels has, it's well worth the pick. Miller had a breakout year last year and especially with Holmes gone, Miller could be huge.

Keller is a a free agent, so I may grab him instead of Gresham.

I think you may be OK with Carlson. I actually like him a lot. The thing that scares me off of him is Hasselbeck. As long as he's upright, you'll be OK. I just don't know if I can count on Hasselbeck making it through a whole season.
