Brian Leonard (1 Viewer)

I have been a Rutgers fan for over 25 years. This is the first time I can remember them having a player they are hyping as a Heisman Trophy candidate. I have seen many of Brian Leonard’s games in person and he can make some highlight reel plays by leaping over tacklers. If he does this in the NFL he will most likely end up with a serious injury. Even though I am a Rutgers fan I am having a hard time seeing him as a legitimate Heisman candidate.

Here are his career stats;

Year Att Yds Avg TD Rec Yds Avg TD

2003 213 880 4.1 9 53 488 9.2 5

2004 199 732 3.7 7 61 518 8.5 2

2005 173 740 4.3 11 55 568 10.3 6

I just don’t see how a RB that has never rushed for more than 900 yards can be taken seriously as a Heisman candidate. The Heisman is supposed to be for the most outstanding college player. Leonard is a nice player but he is definitely not on a Heisman level.

I think he will make a nice pass catching fullback in the NFL and may have some fantasy value especially in PPR scoring.

I still don’t take him seriously as a Heisman candidate. Does anyone think he really has a chance for the Heisman?

Here is a link to his website with some highlights.

Big RU fan too and the whole Heisman thing is to (A) Show recruits Rutgers will pump you up if you even remotely have a shot at it and (B) Using it to spread the word about RU football.

Having a 13 foot screen in Times Square play a Leonard video 4x an hour is awesome exposure for the program and school.

That said I love watching Leonard and can't wait to see how he's used in the NFL.

I am a big Rutgers fan as well, so much so that I will be driving through Ernesto tomorrow so I can go to the game on Saturday.

But no way in hell does Leonard have a shot at winning the Heisman: (1) Not enough exposure; (2) Rutgers won't have a good enough record; and (3) Splitting carries with Raymell Rice.

Also a big RU fan. I agree that he won't contend for the Heisman. Rice is too good to not give a lot of carries, so Leonard won't rack up the rushing stats, although he will continue to be one of the team's leaders in receptions and will most likely lead the team in TDs again. RU could win 8 or 9 games this year, but I am not sure that is enough to help anyway. Leonard has the potential to make an impact in the pros, though. He is multi-talented, has no injury history and is a great leader. I fully expect him to be much more than just a FB in the NFL.

You have to win to be in the Heisman race. Not a very good chance of that happening at RU.
Actually there is a very good chance that RU will have a winning record this year and probably make it to their 2nd straight bowl game. Might not sound like much but for us RU fans - with only 1 previous bowl appearance in over 100 - years these are exciting times.

I think to be a Heisman contender you need to be more than just bowl eligible. Even the Houston Cougars had a 9-2 record when Andre Ware won it.I think Rutgers would need to be at least Top 25 and that depends how much Teel has matured this offseason.

Could be some good triva questions form this right here. How many players have won the Heisman on a team outside the top 25 (if any)? What was the lowest rank for the team of a Heisman winner?

I got Ware's record off this link. Worst I saw were two-loss teams. ETA: Obviously, small sample size though.

The last Heisman winner for a four loss team I could find was Bo Jackson. Is Leonard as good as Bo Jackson?

Leonard is the new Alstott
I figured someone would eventually make this comparison. I have to say that I disagree. Leonard is more athletic than Alstott. He is not just a fullback. He plays tailback quite often for RU. I don't think Alstott could ever jump over tacklers like Leonard.

I love him. Drafted him as my RB1 in a college fantasy league.Alstott was a pretty good runner/receiver when he entered the league though. And he's gone to a bunch of Pro Bowls. I could see Leonard having a similar career.Hopefully, he's not the next Rob Konrad.

They tried to do this with Wills and the kid from Highland Park. Its a joke but, like most have pointed out, It is great exposure. I am glad to see RU not being a doormat anymore. I am from North Jersey but, went to Texas. I have a soft spot in my heart for the Scarlet Knights. RU can compete nationally when they can keep most of the in-state talent.

I don't know about the heisman. I do think he will be drafted in the first round next year either as a full back or a half back. That is the queston NFL scouts are tring to figure out.

Are you Chris Simms?

It's going to be impossible to win the Heisman when he's being outplayed by his own teammate. Ray Rice has over 150 yards and 3TDs in the 3rd quarter. Leonard only has 25 yards rushing.

Looks like the Leonard Heisman campaign was a smokscreen so that other teams would key on Leonard and Rice could get some running room.

The Knights do look good though.

He's not being outplayed - his value is just worth more as a blocker and the smallish Rice as the RB rather than vice versa. He would be a great feature back if RU didn't already have Rice
