Brian Urlacher tweeted Wednesday that he's announcing his retirement after a 13-year career in the NFL. The former Chicago Bears linebacker said in a statement that "Although I could continue playing, I'm not sure I would bring a level of performance or passion that's up to my standards."

Urlacher also said that wearing only one jersey his entire career for such a storied franchise made his decision "pretty clear."

It was an honor to play my entire career for the @chicagobears say.ly/GOh5Sxs

Sorry to hear him retire. I'm glad I don't have to watch him in another teams jersey. (especially a Vikings or Packers jersey) I think he will be HOF'er. Maybe not first ballot.

Thanks Brian.

Hats off to a great career.

Hated him as a Bear...and hated how well he played against the Packers. But respected just how good of a player he was.

The ESPN radio guys were placing him amongst the best linebackers to play over the last 25-30 years for sheer athleticism and talent, right along with Ray Lewis and Mike Singletary.

1st Ballot HoF likely, his age and declining skills were apparent last season. Glad he decided to hang 'em up and play his entire career for 1 team, that also looks good when they go to vote him in the HoF.

8 time Pro Bowl, 4 time All-Pro

According to Pro-Football Talk, Ernie Accorsi was asked about Urlacher's Hall of Fame candidacy during a Sirius XM Radio interview. This was his answer:"I think he’s a borderline Hall of Famer," Accorsi said. "I don’t know that he’s a definite Hall of Famer. I think there is a host of them, like Willie Lanier, that were dominant players. He was good, but I wouldn’t put him in that level."The follow up question was if Urlacher was a guaranteed Hall of Famer:"I don’t think he’s a guarantee. I mean, he may get in because he got a lot of publicity and he was a hard player. But his span that he covered was really restricted. Now a lot of those middle linebackers were in those days. They didn’t have three or four wide receivers so they stayed on the field for three downs. They might be off today. But, no, I certainly don’t have him in [****] Butkus or Ray Lewis [category]. And I don’t think he should be in there, really with [Joe] Schmidt and [Ray] Nitschke and those guys, either."

Being in the same class as Ray Lewis put this in serious jeopardy. Voters are often reluctant to put in guys at the same position in the same year.

IMO he's not much better than Zach Thomas who doesn't look like he'll get in.

Brian Urlacher would have played for Dallas Cowboys
By Chris Wesseling

Brian Urlacher told "The Rich Eisen Podcast" on Wednesday that he retired from football because he realized he is "just not quite the same player" he used to be. Urlacher later told WMVP-AM in Chicago that he couldn't envision wearing a jersey other than that of the Chicago Bears.

The truth is there was one team that intrigued Urlacher enough to keep playing had it pursued his services: The Dallas Cowboys.

"If I could have picked a spot, it would have been Dallas," Urlacher said, via the Chicago Tribune. "(The Cowboys) run our defense. They took our D-coordinator (Rod Marinelli). That would have been ideal. But they have two really good young linebackers."

At this point in his career, Urlacher simply doesn't hold a candle to Cowboys middle linebacker Sean Lee, who was playing at an All-Pro level before a late October toe injury ended his season. The Cowboys also have high expectations for rangy weak-side linebacker Bruce Carter in the role Derrick Brooks filled in the Tampa 2 defense.

Once Urlacher realized the interest wasn't mutual, he decided to "shut it down" on his own terms.

"We talked to every team in the NFL, and maybe in July or August it would have happened, but I'm not going to wait," Urlacher explained. "I want to be somewhere where somebody wants me."

Brian Urlacher didn't really retire as Green Bay Packer
By Marc Sessler

Around the League Writer

When Brian Urlacher announced his retirement on Wednesday after 13 years with the Chicago Bears, the iconic linebacker spoke with pride about "wearing only one jersey for such a storied franchise."

Was he talking about the Green Bay Packers?

No way, but New England Sports Network thought so after SportsPickle, a satirical site, published a tongue-in-cheek report about Urlacher signing a one-day contract with the Pack in order to "go out a winner."

"I know this may rub some people in the Bears organization the wrong way," Urlacher (definitely never) said, per the article. "And some Bears fans, too, probably. But it's my right to end my career the way I want to end it, and doing it as a member of the Green Bay Packers -- unquestionably the best franchise in the NFC North throughout my career and, really, all of NFC North history -- brings me great joy."

CUT TO: The New England Sports Network nerve center, where some poor soul ate this nonsense up without a second thought and published it to the network's ticker, in screaming capital letters, informing greater New England: "URLACHER SIGNS ONE-DAY CONTRACT WITH PACKERS."

Deadspin naturally zeroed in on the gaffe and SportsPickle was delighted to discover that it had fooled ... at least one person.
