Last season, there was a game with **** Vermeil in the NFLNetwork booth, but he lost his voice.

I believe Marshall Faulk and Deion Sanders (who I can't stand) filled in for him.

I remember both doing a fantastic job...best coverage of any NFLN game I viewed.

Anything is better than Gumble...last week I turned the tv volume down and listened to Westwood One radio.
finally someone with a brain....if you don't like him use the mute button or change the channel.....next week use the search feature instead of starting a new thread.
HAHA......Go Duke Lacrosse. I would stick with fixing your school as opposed to worrying about who is starting a new thread on Thursday Night Football.

Why are you starting a hateful thread like this to focus on another man's screwups? He is living the American Dream. He is at the top of his craft and is sharing his love for broadcasting and football with all of you. I hope everyone here can strive to live as Bryant Gumble does. Please take some time to reflect on what you have posted here. Have a great Friday everyone.

I feel bad for Bryant. He is doing the best he can. Isn't that all anyone can ask for?

When you come to think about it, it's too easy being mean. Have a nice, peaceful weekend everybody!

How do we start a petition and get it in the hands of NFL network? There's got to be some way the voice of the people can be heard!

He is at the top of his craft
Thats the problem. Doing your best dont cut it. There are 52 guys down on each sideline that wouldnt keep their jobs long if the best they can claim is they are doing their best. The broadcasters should be no different. I want THE best.

Bryant Gumbel has worked very hard to get where he is. Years ago, he was a competent announcer. In his 15 years on the Today Show, he was like a friend with whom I shared a warm cup of coffee in my living room every workday. Now that he's in his golden years, I think it's great that he gets a chance to go back to doing what he loves, and that we should all give him our support, and appreciate him for all of his efforts to entertain us over the years.

Thats the sentiment that kept Pat Summerall in the booth to the point where he was drooling on the console and didnt realize the game was still being played. Screw that. Put the best people in all the time like every other job based on performance in the world. Why not trot out Jim McMahon to play QB for the Bears? He's entertained me for years...

I think we need to give more respect to the people that put their lives into their craft. We need to learn from our elders, and not ridicule them for their failings. I think everyone should go to a retirement home and just listen.

all i was thinking about last night watching this goofball screw one thing up, after another, after another... etc, was that I couldnt wait for this post to be up today... oh, how amusing it is. He is probably the worst in all of sports, maybe even surpassing Bill Walton or Joe Theisman... I cant believe he gets paid more than me!!

That's beautiful, man. :sadbanana:

Last night when they showed grossman in street clothes gumbel said something like there is grossman in shivies? what the hell is a sheive???

It's a blocking scheme whereby the linemen block everything except blitzers, so that Grossman can get creamed. HTH.

can we petition the NFL network? Give us Deion, give us Emmitt, give us Irvin! Please! ANYONE but Gumbel

I was hoping Gumble would come up with a knee injury and have to be carted out of the pressbox

I'm pretty sure it was an ankle.

i don't have satellite but i caught last week's game and you guys are absolutely right about BG being in over his head. The way he goofs up the most simple things shows to me that he probably didn't grow up watching football as a fan. He's a "talking head" that is trying to pass himself off as a true fan and it's so plainly obvious that he isn't the way he keeps screwing up.

I imagine that we'd see a similar result if **** Butkus was announcing women's figure skating. No disrepect to BG, but he's not from "our world"

Uh no. Sadly, Gumbel is waaaaaaaayyyyy better than any of those three. Two are screamers and the other is almost unintelligible.

Sorry, this isn't The View. It's a football broadcast, not an Arafat interview. He's boring, he doesn't know the game, and he makes continuous simple mistakes and seemingly isn't even watching the same game half the time. I don't care what he's done in the past, it has no bearing on his present job. Unless he had been a football broadcaster for all that time, then I could see giving him a break. But just because Kermit hosted the Today Show for years doesn't mean we have to cut him a break for all his years of service. It has nothing to do with disrespect for someone who puts their life into their craft, because he has not put his life into football. He just plain sucks as a football announcer and all the puppy dog eyes sentiment about old folks doesn't change that or affect it at all.

Gumbel needs to learn when to be authoritative and when not to be. When the ball is on the 27, it doesn't appear to be on the 27, it IS on the 27. When a player gets 5 yards past the marker, he doesn't appear to have the first down, he HAS the first down. And then to couple it with calling passes complete and FGs good while the ref is waving them off? A clue, any clue, would be welcome. On a 3rd and 8 or so Portis is tackled for a 3 yard loss and Gumbel says Portis appears to be short of the marker, he didn't even get past the LoS. If you're going to have someone who doesn't know jack about football in the booth, make him the 3rd wheel, not the play by play guy. If I was Collinsworth I'd be eating pot brownies every game just to get through without strangling the guy.And for those that think Bg is better than the ESPN crew, I can't see how any football fan could not like Jaws. Kornheiser makes it almost unwatchable, but I'd listen to Jaws if I had to hear Theisman and MaGuire bicker.
really :goodposting: Exactly my thoughts.

I have respect for what Gumble has done, but I just think he should not be doing football games. They should have someone who knows the game like Michaels, Tirico, or a former player.

Anyone notice when he called Briggs a defensive back?why do they have this guy doing games? I think they should give Marshall Faulk a shot.
@ being the play by play guy? That ranks right up there with, well, calling Briggs a DB
There was a game earlier in the season, may have been preseason, but Faulk was doing play by play. I loved the way Faulk was analyzing the defenses, and he seemed to have a ability to do play by play. :goodposting:My mistake I guess it was last season, not sure how it happened, just remember I thought Faulk was good.

you are 50% correct... The last part of your statement is correct...ETA: his voice is just so damned annoying!

Civvies, as in civilian clothes. Not in uniform.
Thanks for the clarification but who the hell talks like that on TV??
Lots of people? It's a pretty common term and when players are out of uniform usually they say "street clothes" or "civvies".

I think Gumble is doing the best he can and you can't fault him for trying. If anything listening to him should help you appreciate the other play by play guys in the business and you should be thankful for them just as I am thankful to gumble for helping me see the light on this. God bless Greg Gumble and God bless Chris Collinsworth for being able to single handedly keep all the fine folks over at Aqua net gainfully employed for all these years and the years to come!

posting excellence :goodposting:but I don't blame Gumble at all for trying...I blame the network for putting him in the booth!

Are you counting errors calling the game? If so, I've heard him mix up a few players during plays. Mistook Cooley for Betts...
I seriously wonder if Bumble's eyesight isn't shot - he blows the names of players so routinely that I suspect he can't read the jersey numbers on the field. I'm not kidding. Maybe he needs some Harey-Caray style pop-bottle bottom glasses like HC used late in his career.

maybe you should read more than football message boards.news flash...all were acquitted, the DAs going to jail.

Are you trying to suck up to Santa to get extra presents?

i find it hard to believe that Gumby was the best play-by-play guy that was available to NFLN. I suspect what attracted NFLN is that his name is well known in America... but that doesn't qualify him for jack! I mean, ok, the network is going to accept his occasion screw-up, but I know for a fact that if he was "ummm-ing" as he tried to compose a thought throughout his broadcast, the network would've pulled the plug on him almost immediately. But i don't see the difference between the two ... both are forms of unprofessionalism.

I guess NFLN saw that Gumble made the jump to "sports broadcasting" on his HBO show. BUt that show is scripted from top to bottom and it's a far cry from trying to do play-by-play in a game where there is constant change and things happening at 1000 miles an minute.

Obviously, unless he improves, NFLN can't let Gumble ruin their broadcasts much longer

The DA went to jail for one day....big deal. He isn't doing anymore time.

Why are announcers more important than games? Who cares aboiut missing a FG call. We knew within seconds what it was. I thought it was good too.

Although I've only seen a handful of games on the NFL Network, he said repeatedly during those telecasts on short rushing plays: "______ in the backfield.......and he GETS it!" He wasn't referring that the back got the first down -- but that he got handed the ball. That's infuriating.

Also, on running plays, he says "and the back comes this way..." What way? My way? Your way?

I think Carrot Top could do a better job than Gumbal.

... or maybe that comedian Steven Wright since he's less mono-tone than Gumbal.

Cheating on his first wife was a pretty big screwup.

I never understood the cheating thing. If you are unhappy end it.

I like Jaws, I just don't like Kornheiser at all. Plus all the actors they bring in to the booth it gets a little irritating, when I want football and they are talking about Fred Claus.
