Bryce Brown anything to see here? (1 Viewer)

11 for 64 rushing and 2 for 18 receiving. Didn't catch the game, did he look as good as his stats or was it against the 3rd stringers?

From his stats, it looks like he was a lot more effective than Dixon with his carries but I know that doesn't mean much on such a small sample size and when it's just the preseason.
Spiller/Jackson rotated for about 1.5 quarters. Then Brown came in for the Spiller role, and Dixon played the Jackson role.
The Spiller role? Didn't expect that.Thanks.
Meaning he played until they got close, then Dixon came in.

Rotoworld:

Bryce Brown - RB - Bills

Bills coach Doug Marrone said he views RB Bryce Brown as a potential starter.

"In my mind Bryce Brown is a very talented running back that has the potential to start in the NFL," Marrone said "His production is not surprising for any of us." Brown is expected to spend this year behind C.J. Spiller and Fred Jackson, but Marrone's comments suggest he views him as the long-term feature back. Spiller is a free agent after this season and 33-year-old Jackson is unlikely to be with Buffalo beyond 2015. Brown has dominated against third-stringers in the Bills' first two preseason games, rushing for 104 yards on 18 carries (5.8 YPC).

So what's the consensus here? I've watched most of both Bills games and it seems like Brown is 4th string behind Dixon.

I'm pretty sure he is 4th string behind Dixon.
If Brown looked terrible in the preseason it would be one thing, but he's looked good. They traded for him and he's looked good and the coaches comments about him have all been positive. I don't care what the depth chart says, I don't see any way he's behind Dixon.

Agree. I have seen many quotes from head coaches that have said that depth charts mean nothing in preseason, pay no attention to it.

Well besides the depth chart, that's the way it has played out on the field so far. Spiller/Jackson, Dixon, Brown.

This is another situation, like Christine Michael, where people only see what he does with the ball in his hands and not all the other things that go into a RB being an asset on the field. If a RB can't be trusted in pass protection then it is unlikely that he will see much playing time regardless of how good they look running the ball.

As to actually running the ball it would help Brown if he wasn't hit for a loss on 18% of his carries like he has been for his career. It suggests that he freelances too much and doesn't follow the play, which is something that kind of annoys coaches.

What Has Happened To Bryce Brown?

October 10, 2014/ Michael Okun It’s an absolute mystery why Bryce Brown has not played this season. During the preseason I wrote about how special this guy was and how every time he played he was dynamic and awesome!

But the Bills choose to forget they have him when our rushing game has had very little success.

C.J. Spiller seemed motivated in the first few games as he had to know that Brown was acquired by the Bills to not sit on the bench.

But I now question why they traded for him when it’s obvious that C.J. has not been the same, struggling to gain only 8 yards against the Lions on 10 carries.

You can say our offensive line has struggled against great defenses in the past two games but Fred Jackson is in the same backfield and has had better results. An example was clearly demonstrated in our last game against those same Lions where Fred gained 49 yards on 10 carries for a respectful 4.9 average.

Jackson also blocks better where C.J. has become a liability in this regard.

C.J.’s blocking is horrendous, which in most cases causes our quarterback to have no time and get sacked. C.J. decided to not give a hoot blocking against the Lions which caused Kyle Orton to get sacked inside our 3 yard line!

It’s time to bring Bryce Brown out from wherever they have him hiding and have him playing with Fred in the same way C.J. has tried to play with results that have worsened.

I have outlined in my preseason game 1 recap all about Bryce Brown and how I thought he would help big time in making this the best group of running backs in the league. Forget being the best now as were one of the worst and we need this 23 year old to play more than ever to add the spark needed to help our team.

Anthony Dixon played some in the first few games and did good when he was in, but he is not the same caliber of player as Brown.

This looks like C.J.’s last year in Buffalo and it’s clearly time to have Bryce Brown play, as he is the future.

I believe CJ will be a stud in the right offense. He's in a poor fit of an offense and his skill set will shine in a more wide open offense. Lot's of places he could go and have big value.

But Brown getting buried in light of what they gave up to get him is still a poor football decision on the Bills part. If you consider you can find starting quality RB's in the middle rounds of the draft you get to lock up for 4 years on a cheap rookie contract it's poor planning if their plan was to bury him for the year when he'll only have on year left on his deal. If this was their plan they should have just picked a RB in next years draft and had him locked up for 4 more years.

I can only assume this was their plan because the way Brown looked in the preseason and camp could not have possibly been the reason he can't even get game day active.

Agreed. I don't think CJ can carry the load. Buffalo agrees as they have never de-emphasized Fred Jackson in the RBBC.

I'd have to disagree for the most part. He's average 5 ypc during his career and almost ran for 1,000 on a bad ankle last season. I only say for the most part in that I don't think he's your classic 3 down back so if that's what you mean by not carrying the load I'd agree but I think he could be used somewhat close to how the Chiefs used Charles last season or at worse the way Haley utilized Charles. Anything north of 15 carries a game is probably stretching it with him but there is a difference in not being a 3 down back and being nothing more than a COP. I think Spiller falls somewhere in between.

As for previous comment about Lynch being a stud in Buffalo I'd disagree with that as well. He was good, not a stud, He used to constantly run up the backs of his OL, lacked the patience he seems to exhibit now and was 4 ypc kind of guy who like Spiller was often outplayed by Fred. I'm not sure if Lynch just got smarter/more patient as a runner or if maybe he did not actually learn from watching Fred during their time together because he does a much better job of being patient and setting up his blocks then he did when he was in Buffalo. He also seems to be in better physical condition, got a little heavy at the end of his Bills run if I recall correctly.

That's what I mean. When I think of a RB stud, for me, they are bellow 3-down type backs. I think Spiller is not that but a good player who can score any time he touches the ball. There's value in real and fantasy football for that.

While exciting with the ball in his hands Brown obviously has huge liabilities in his game. Chip Kelly does not give up on can't miss RBs (like so many people, who aren't NFL coaches or scouts seem to think he is). I forgot the exact number (I think I quoted it in here back in August) but Brown gets hit for a loss at a higher rate then any RB over the last two seasons, and it's not even close. Apparently he freelances too much and isn't patient enough to let plays develop and follow his blockers. I am sure there are other issues as well that we are not privy to.

Strike 1, Strike 2 , Strike 3 ... You're out.

Spiller had 1700 total yards and 8 tds in a season in spite of the Bills ...and did that on barely 200 carries.

Lynch barely broke 1000 yds his 1st 2 seasons in Buffalo and it was all down hill from there ...they benched him and ran him out of town.

They ran McGahee out of town and he had 1400 total yards and 8 tds his first season with BAL ...I'd say that's close to stud

The Bills have ran for a total of 117 yards over the last two weeks, but don't have any plans of getting Brown involved. Anthony Dixon will continue to be active due to his special teams value. Brown has yet to play a single snap this season.

Rotoworld:

According to ESPN's Adam Caplan, "there's no guarantee" Bryce Brown will play at all for the Bills this season.

Brown doesn't play special teams, so he's technically Buffalo's No. 4 running back behind Fred Jackson, C.J. Spiller, and Anthony Dixon. The Bills traded a fourth-round pick to acquire Brown this offseason. It's fair to wonder if they're regretting that decision now. Brown remains a hold in Dynasty leagues, but he's barely worth a roster spot in 14- and 16-team re-draft formats. He needs F-Jax or Spiller to suffer an injury to get active.

Why is this guy sitting and how can the Bills coaches justify this decision? Did they not want him but Waley did and now the coaches are in some sort of power play where they sit Waley's guy?

We saw the bad blood with reports of shouting on the sidelines due to QB decisions with the coaching staff and they seem to be on the same page with that move but this makes no sense.

The coaches haven't activated Bryce for a single game. Its like they are punishing Waley by not playing Bryce.

If C.J. Spiller was playing lights out it would make some sense but that isn't the case and this stinks IMHO.

A super optimistic take:

They are hoping for Spiller to have a huge game so they can trade him before the deadline.

Optimistic but more realistic:

They are saving Bryce until next year when Spiller leaves. Bryce is not good on special teams so why make their #3 RB active when he doesn't do anything else? Might as well use Dixon who also plays special teams.

Pessimistic:

He's been doing something wrong. Whether it's attitude or not trying hard in practice because he's upset, the coaches are not happy with him. His performance in preseason was all positive so there's no way it's performance related.

Jackson just went off the field with what looks to be a leg injury of some sort. He was then carted off.

Dixon is nothing special, right? Is Brown the preemptive add here? Looking for some hometown advice.

Carting Spiller off... Injuries are a part of football. Dixon is ok but Brown will see time next week I have to imagine.

Late to this party. Why is Dixon the third rb?
He's always been. It probably has more to do with the fact that Dixon plays special teams and Bryce Brown doesn't. When you have Fred Jackson and Spiller, you're better off having a 3rd RB active that does more than just play RB because he's not going to see much time. My guess would be a pretty even split by the two to start (assuming Spiller and Fred miss time), but Bryce SHOULD be the one to own.

Doug Marrone discusses Bills' offensive line, Bryce Brown, more (press conference transcript)

October 16, 2014

Excerpt:

Q: Could you expand on the job that Bryce Brown has done in practice?
A: I think Bryce is a pro. When it’s a difficult situation, I think that he gets out there and works extremely hard to try to get better and better each day, because the thing about it is, you never know when the opportunity is going to come. Again, inactives are a tough call when people are healthy. There are a lot of things that go into it, so you’ve got to be ready. That’s the one thing about it. There are a lot of injuries that occur. Some teams more than other, but eventually you’re going to have to make some decisions when those things happen. The one thing you can’t do, as a professional football player, is you cannot not be ready. That’s the main thing.

Q: You’ve seen him be ready?
A: Yeah. If something happened, I wouldn’t have a problem. If something happened where we can get him up, I wouldn’t have a problem bringing him up.

Q: Have you given consideration to sitting Jordan Gay and bringing up Bryce?
A: I don’t know if I would compare one player to one player, you know? I think that there are a lot of things that go into it. We have this discussion every week and then throughout the week. The other thing you want to do is when people go out there and practice and you have the game plan, you want to make sure that they’re practicing well within that game plan. If they’re not, you have to make decisions of who’s up and who’s down based on the way they practiced during the week.

Q: How much can you see his improvement based on what he’s done on the scout team? Is it easy to tell or harder to tell?
A: I think on any player what happens is you say to yourself, ‘Hey, listen. He’s doing everything he can in practice and looks good, and then you really don’t know until you get in the game. That’s the one I will say, in my experience, is that there’s been players that I’ve had. Brandon Moore’s a great example. He was practicing and practicing. Management came to me and I said, ‘Look, this is as far as I can take him. Everything else is going to be depending on how he plays. I don’t know if that answers the question. Bryce has done everything we’ve asked him to do. He’s played before, so it’s a little bit different than the Brandon Moore situation, where he hadn’t played before.

Fred is being carted off. Face in his hands, may have been crying. Obviously doesn't look good
Text from espn that Spiller has a broken collarbone.
Q: You’ve seen him be ready?
A: Yeah. If something happened, I wouldn’t have a problem. If something happened where we can get him up, I wouldn’t have a problem bringing him up.
If Bryce doesn't play next week he should be fired.

Dixon was 13-51 rushing and 3-15 receiving, I wouldn't just assume that Brown will come in and dominate touches. It seems likely that Dixon And Brown will split touches the same way Jackson and Spiller did.

Rotoworld:

Following Sunday's win over the Vikings, coach Doug Marrone said he has "no problem bringing up" Bryce Brown.

Brown has been inactive in all seven games so far this season. But the Bills lost Fred Jackson (groin) and C.J. Spiller (broken collarbone) on Sunday, leaving Brown as the next man up. A talented runner that was acquired in an offseason trade, Brown looms as the most sought-after waiver wire add this week. He's rushed 190 times for 878 yards (4.62 YPC) with six touchdowns in his NFL career. This preseason, Brown rushed 34 times for 152 yards (4.47 YPC) and caught eight passes for 68 yards.

Here we go!

Bryce-Time!!

He has the talent and when he filled in for McCoy a couple years back did an excellent job. No doubt he's a better talent then Dixon

I feel like I agree but I also feel like this is a McKinnon/Asiata situation. It's clear who the better running RB is from a history standpoint.

Who? And when you write "better", what do you mean? More athletically gifted? More productive? Least likely to fumble or botch an assignment?

Question is, does Buffalo use him?

Because even if he is the "better" back they may not.

Who's on first, what is on second.

Bryce Brown - RB - Bills

When asked about Bryce Brown, Fred Jackson said he's "an every-down back."

"We won't miss a beat," Jackson said. Although Anthony Dixon is under the impression he'll be a workhorse now, he's more likely to stick in a big back and special teams role while serving as the complement. Brown struggled with fumbles and bouncing too many runs outside as an Eagle, but he's excellent in the pass game and has serious juice in his legs. On 190 career NFL carries, he's produced 878 yards and six touchdowns.

i'm probably going to pull the trigger and take a leap of faith/desperation. I've busted on Ball, Gerhart, and limped along with Ellington. Two years ago, Brown came up big for me when he filled in for McCoy.

Worth the flyer over keeping average players on the bench.
