Bucs Camp (1 Viewer)

Just got back from today's Bucs camp. Couple of notes from the day:

Freeman:

Josh seems to really feel comfortable just two days in to camp. This kid can really wing the ball, too. He made some throws in to some really tight spots today and threw a couple of picks but looks confident. Was looking like a gunslinger out there today so take that as you will. He made some great throws though and I think the confidence and poise are definitely there to take another step forward this season.

Blount:

Spent a lot of time before practice working on catching balls from the Juggs machine. All of the RBs did a lot of receiving work today but they definitely made it a point to get in some extra reps with Blount. Still looks kind of awkward receiving; caught a lot of balls in on his body, bobbles, etc. Also looks like he needs a lot more work on his pass blocking at the moment. It's early but I think someone else could be doing the third down work. Lumpkin (3rd year RB out of Georgia) ran with the first team some and Graham was doing some 3rd down work.

Winslow:

Freeman was targeting Winslow early and often and the two were making good use of the middle of the field. Word is Freeman and Winslow spent a lot of time chumming around together this summer and it definitely looks like there is a good rapport there. This will definitely be something to keep an eye on if the amount of targets he received indicates anything. As a side note, he has reportedly owns Freeman in FIFA.

WRs:

Nothing really caught my eye in particular with the WRs today. I was spending most of my time watching Winslow and the RB situation. I did notice that Benn stuck around for a good 20 mins after practice working on routes and catching.

great write! That little bit about Benn staying late is huge cuz it suggests that his knee is feeling well and he didn't need to run back to the trainers right after practice to ice it up.

i know TB fans are disappointed in their FA, but y'all should be excited about your team this year... they look good. If that rookie DE who fell from top five to 2nd round stays healthy and lives up to potential for just a few years, that's gonna be a steal.

When asked in his post practice presser today about Blount being an every down back, Raheem said that he wasn't sure he wanted an every down back and was happy with the way they were doing things. Also touched on the aforementioned rapport between Freeman and Winslow and how sharp Freeman looked. Just a FYI for yal. I'll give you guys more when I get it.

Doesn't surprise me that Blount is still not considered a 3 down back. He's not proven himself in short yardage situations or GL chances.

Very interested to hear how they split time up at MLB between McKenzie and Foster.

Any insights from those in attendance would be greatly appreciated.

I was there today and yesterday too, so I'll post some thoughts.

The Bucs WR's are DEEP. Mike Williams looked great, but that shouldn't surprise anyone. Dez Briscoe and Raymond Webber were both very impressive, and caught everything thrown to them. Dez will be the #3, and it won't shock me to see Webber make the team and be the 4 or 5. Benn didn't participate much in team drills. Sammie Stroughter looked good.

Raheem was asked about Freeman after practice. He just laughed and said, "He's awesome. I love him." There's really not anything that needs to be added to that.

Rookie TE Daniel Hardy has good size and speed, but I've seen him drop about 5 passes between today and yesterday.

Kellen Winslow was making great catches, and looks explosive. He says that he's the healthiest he's been in years, and it really shows. I'm expecting a career year from Winslow.

It's amazing how quick and agile Blount is. He had a spin move today that was just sick. Caught a lot of passes yesterday. Earnest Graham dropped a couple easy balls.

I'll post some thoughts after tomorrow's and Monday's practices too.

I've been informing the pool regarding Winslow's value status...actually my entire redraft TE strategy is basically waiting on TE and drafting Winslow in the middle rounds.

Winning

Sweet!!!!

I'm basically ALL-IN with the Bucs this year. I absolutely love Freeman as a mid-round starter or as a mid-to-late round backup in fantasy leagues this year. The value is there to be had. I actually think Blount will prosper this year also.....albeit he needs to be more consistent in the red-zone, but he could also be a huge steal in fantasy drafts this year.

Caddy will be back and once again will out perform where he is drafted. I hear Blount is working on catching the ball more so that could be huge in ppr if he becomes more versatile. Im afraid the Huggins experiment is over... I hear he had a prettty bad injury so odds are he becomes a pc guy and maybe his name comes up.in 2012.

The sleeper to keep an eye on this season is WR Raymond Webber 6.2, 218, 4.5 40. He is the big sleeper and then there is Dezmond Brisco who should already be on everyones radar from last year. From a fantasy perspective, seeing if a WR besides Mike Williams becomes relevant is the main thing to watch here.

O-line stays in tact so that bodes well for continuity and should really give this o an advantage.

ANY info you guys could keep giving on Mike Williams would be much appreciated. I don't want him to hit a wall this year.

We'll have to wait and see. He reportedly worked hard in the offseason, spending time with Freeman. I think he was the first Buc in the building when the lockout lifted. Every report I've read from fans attending the practices have been glowing.I would be hesitant to believe that Blount's involvement in the passing game will be huge in ppr. If I look at the reports of fans attending the practice, Blount doesn't look good trying to catch the ball. Yes, the Bucs are trying to get Blount to catch the ball more, so they don't announce to the other team, "Look, Blount is on the field--he's either running the ball or not involved in the play." Here's a link to a story that describes this thinking:

Kregg Lumpkin is #2 RB right now and I hear they really like him. Dont be surprised if he remains higher on the depth chart than rookie Bradford.

I agree that he prob wont be a huge factor in the passing game but if he can learn to pick up the blitz he could have a great opprotunity to catch a few passes a game. Problem is Blount has long been regarded as dumb as a rock. Maybe with another year he will start being able to grasp passing situations a little better.

That means Blount has to 1) improve his pass blocking and 2) catch better than he's shown in camp. Tall order. It'll be interesting to see if the Bucs bring back Cadillac or some other passing-down back.To me, the variability in Blount's FF value lies in whether or not he gets goal-line carries, something the coaches seemed to take away from him last year.

Everyone looks good until the hitting starts.

I was there tonight. Not a lot to report on, as they aren't even in pads yet.

-Kellen Winslow really did stand out though. He's ridiculous. I think he's in line for a big year.

-Mike Williams caught a leaping touchdown in the back left corner of the end zone, while in double coverage. Was the highlight of the day. He's something else.

-Bowers is a full load. He has one hell of a first step off the ball. Holy crap.

That's really all. Wish there was more to report, but it was a borderline walkthrough.

NiceBowers has a good shot at taking the DLine to the next level. They have a chance to be close to when they had Sapp, McFarland, Ahanotu, and Jones in 2000. Alright I might be ahead of myself but they are getting better. Everyone is hyping Winslow and I'm right there with everyone. Maybe he has a top3 type season, certainly has the pedigree and skills.

Didn't make it tonight but yeah, Lumpkin definitely got some reps in with the 1st team the other day. As far as Blount's intelligence, someone on the team told me that they weren't really concerned about his non-attendance to their offseason practices because they basically just tell him "run left or run right." I think the guy has the skills but it's probably going to be a year or so before he puts it all together.

Winslow said after yesterday's practice that he was really disappointed in his practice despite the fact that he looked like a complete stud out there. He said he made a lot of mistakes in his routes and what not that made the plays he made look better than they really did. Love to hear that. Mean's that even if he doesn't bring his A game he's going to still make plays and is healthy.

I'll be back out there tomorrow night for practice and most likely the rest of the week. Let me know if you all have anything else you want me to check out. If you want, you can follow me on Twitter @jtkennedyiii and I'll try to post updates while I'm there. Glad everyone is enjoying this, makes me feel better after mooching info for the last few years!

One more quick hitter. D may not be there as a real life unit but I think they have a shot at being like the Pack/Saints/Bengals from the last few years where even though they give up points and yards they make plenty of picks/sacks to make up for it. Lot of young playmakers out there. Made a couple of picks the yesterday and we all know about their D-line. Returned one to the house in practice yesterday too. Something to keep an eye on.

Oh yea, saw Lumpkin and Earnest Graham in there in the shotgun. I doubt Caddy comes back. I think they move Graham off of fullback completely and make him the third-down passing/blocking back.

They're talking about Blount catching passes, but that's all window-dressing. As long as he can stick in there and hit a few blocks while Josh is passing, I feel like they'll be ok with that. He doesn't really need to be a complete back to be effective.

correct...I've been trying to explain this to the pool for several months now.
why is he more rediculous this year compared to others? im proly just salty bc i got kinda burned by over projecting him last yr.

Heading back from practice so I'll post more later but will post this now:

Full pads today, ran goal line o. Blunt was in on the first play (good sign) but then got stretched out and stuffed (bad sign) and then proceeded to get in a scuffle and start throwing punches (worse sign). Just sayin. More later.

I uploaded this play on Twitter.

 The new Blount, same as the old Blount.

Alright some quick notes:

The offense didn't look quite as sharp as they did Saturday. Maybe it was the pads. Freeman's first pass in 7 on 7 was to Winslow but was picked off by Ronde. Winslow was targeted a lot again but also had a drop or two today. Him and Freeman spent a lot of time talking in between practice and drills as well.

WRs looked good when the balls were getting to them and sometimes even when they didn't. Mike Williams smoked Talib for a deep TD grab in one on ones. Guys were quick of the line and making solid cuts. Don't know what their exact routes (exact a nice 10 yd out from Williams in one on ones) were but they looked crisp. Don't think I saw Benn out there today though. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Goal line duties seem wide open. Blount got the first rep and was yanked but I'm not sure if it was because of the ensuing scuffle or by design. Blount, Lumpkin, Graham, and Bradford all got in pretty much equal reps. Bradford seemed to do the least dancing around behind the line and plunged forward for a TD and had a few more. Took them 6 or 7 tries to get one in from the 2 so that was a bit concerning.

I think we may be seeing close to a full blown RBBC here. Lumpkin is getting a of reps out there. The punches thrown by Blount concern me, too.

DBs were ball hawks and really made some good plays out there. I'm going to really keep an eye on this unit because I know they are completely off the radar.

Very very early but I like Bradford and think he can be the other RB although he and Blount are both pretty good size so Bradford is not a COP back like many think of. Earnest Graham has had his chances and did an admirable job when he had to shoulder the load a few seasons ago. Not a big Lumpkin supporter either but I see some others tend to like him. Bradford seems like a hold for now.

:blackdot:

besides my texans, this is my favorite team to follow. i love how underappreciated josh freeman is by the national media. guy is right up there with bradford.

Came a cross this timeline of today's practice (read from bottom up):

Bucs camp report: Live updates from Monday practice

AMPA --

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers held their first padded practice of training camp Monday afternoon.

We followed the action here on TBO.com with live updates from beat writers Roy Cummings and Ira Kaufman. (Note: this report runs with the newest updates first. To start from the beginning, scroll to the bottom of the page and work your way up.)

7:12 p.m.: And that's a wrap. An intense, spirited session that no doubt was exactly what the coaching staff was looking for.

7:12 p.m.: TE Kellen Winslow just made up those 3 yards and more, catching a 10-yard pass. He had to reprimand young CB Anthony Gaitor after Gator took him down with a nice tackle.. Must protect those knees. - R.C.

7:10 p.m.: DT Gerald McCoy is just fine. He just blew up a running play by getting into the backfield at about the same time that the handoff was being made. That would have been a 3-yard loss. - R.C.

7:04 p.m.: Another run stuff for the defense with rookie DE Adrian Clayborn and DT Roy Miller leading the way. The battle is even overall, though. - R.C.

7:02 p.m.: Now they're turning around so that the offense is backed up inside its own 20. DT Gerald McCoy is still in, but he's still flexing that knee a bit. - R.C.

7:00 p.m.: DT Gerald McCoy is back in after skipping a couple of plays. You can go back to breathing now Bucs fans. - R.C.

6:59 p.m.: Bucs trainer checking on DT Gerald McCoy. Doesn't appear serious. - I.K.

6:58 p.m.: Talk about intense, LeGarrette Blount, Ty Mckenzie and Adrian Clayborn got into a scuffle on the first play. On the second, S Sean Jones broke up Earnest Graham's flea-flicker psss in the end zone. On the fourth, Gerald McCoy stuffed Kregg Lumpkin for no gain. Not to worry, though. Blount scored one play later. The bad news is McCoy has come up limping and he's flexing his right knee.

6:57 p.m.: RB LeGarrette Blount breaks a few tackles at the goal line. Seems like old times. - I.K.

6:52 p.m.: Coach Raheem Morris just huddled the team up. This is going to be 10 minutes of game-like situations and the offense is working on its goal-line package. - R.C.

6:52 p.m.: The players are gathering near the end zone for some high-intensity contact. - I.K.

6:51 p.m.: Break in the action for a few minutes before things get physical out here. - I.K.

6:50 p.m.: The players are coming off a brief cool-down break. Looks like some intense 11-on-11 work is just ahead. - R.C.

6:37 p.m.: Rookie DE Adrian Clayborn may have had some trouble with Donald Penn but Cory Brandon is no match for him. Clayborn just bull-rushed Brandon into the first row of the stands. - R.C.

6:34 p.m.: We just got a glimpse of that thump that MLB Tyrone Mckenzie brings. On a short pass over the middle to LeGarrette Blount, McKenzie got to Blount at the same time as the ball and just about blew Blount up. Had it been a game, he would have leveled him. - R.C.

6:32 p.m.: Left tackle Donald Penn just took on rookie DE Adrian Clayborn twice in a row in a one-on-one drill and schooled him twice. That's OK. That's how the rookie will learn. - R.C.

6:30 p.m.: Captain Fear is stoking up the crowd with the help of some cheerleaders. These fans want to see some fierce hitting out here. - R.C.

6:29 p.m.: Ronde Barber is having an All-Pro day. He broke up a Josh Freeman pass a few plays ago and just intercepted the Bucs QB during a 7-on-7 drill. TE Kellen Winslow can't seem to shake him. - R.C.

6:27 p.m.: They're leaving no stone unturned here. The running backs are now practicing their tackling in a drill that represents a pass being intercepted by the opposition. - R.C.

6:23 p.m.: Mike Williams just leaped high into the air at the goal line to take a ball away from Aqib Talib and score a long touchdown. - R.C.

6:19 p.m.: Mike Williams got behind Myron Lewis on a deep ball but Lewis won the battle by turning around at the last second and getting his hand up to break up the pass. - R.C.

6:17 p.m.: Kregg Lumpkin just broke off a nice gain on a run off right tackle. That's what the Bucs are looking for. - R.C.

6:16 p.m.: LeGarrette Blount is running like a sledgehammer. - I.K.

6:11 p.m.: This has not been one of WR Dezmon Briscoe's better days. He's dropped a couple of passes already. But now comes a chance to redeem himself in the 11-on-11 work. - R.C.

6:09 p.m.: While the rest of the offense works on its goal-line running attack, the receivers are running deep routes and taking passes from Josh Johnson. - R.C.

6:06 p.m.: Yesterday it was red zone passing. Today the offense is concentrating on its goal-line running. - R.C.

6:02 p.m.: The humidity has dropped markedly in the past hour here at practice. - I.K.

6:02 p.m.: So far the offensive linemen are winning the majority of the one-on-one battles. Adrian Clayborn has been the exception to that rule. - R.C.

6:00 p.m.: Bucs co-chairman Bryan Glazer is watching the start of individual blocking drills. - I.K.

5:57 p.m.: The real fun is beginning down at the far end of the field where the linemen are going one-on-one against each other. - R.C.

5:54 p.m.: Still no Arrelious Benn out here. This is the third straight day that he's missed an afternoon workout. The Bucs are either being extremely careful with him or he suffered a slight setback in his recovery. The good news is that he has been coming out after practice to work on his own. - R.C.

5:46 p.m.: The hitting hasn"t even started and already we have our first casualty. FB Erik Lorig is walking off with what appears to be a left foot, ankle or leg problem. At least he's walking. Could be a wardrobe malfunction. - R.C.

5:42 p.m.: OK, I was wrong about doing the warmup inside. They just started that now. Individual work should pick up again right after this. - R.C.

5:41 p.m.: The running backs are working on making one-handed catches. Kregg Lumpkin just wowed the crowd with one. - R.C.

5:40 p.m.: The boys are done - for now - with special teams and are going right into the individual or position-specific fundamental portion of the workout. That means they probably did the warmup inside while waiting for the threat of lightning to pass. - R.C.

5:39 p.m.: New OL coach Pat Morris is working with his guys off to the side. Morris says he likes what he has to work with. - I.K.

5:37 p.m.: Based on the shout-outs he's getting from the fans here, former USF Bull Tyrone McKenzie is fast becoming a fan favorite. - R.C.

5:35 p.m.: Newly re-signed LB Adam Hayward got a nice round of applause when he sauntered out onto the field a few minutes ago. - R.C.

5:33 p.m.: Josh Freeman is warming up on a far field. When he arrives, that's when the real action will start. - I.K.

5:31 p.m.: Cody Grimm may be a starter at saftey, but he's still a regular on special teams. He's showing guys how the job is done here. - R.C.

5:32 p.m.: Coach Raheem Morris brought out the sound system for this one. Nothing like mixing business with pleasure. - R.C.

5:29 p.m.: These special teams drills are seldom as exciting as 11-on-11 or 7-on-7 drills, but they're very important. This is where young players like S Ahmad Black and LB Darrell Smith make the team. - R.C.

5:24 p.m.: The part of this workout the coaches and general manager are looking forward to most is the battle up front. Everyone is eager to see how DEs Da'Quan Bowers and Adrian Clayborn and DT Gerald McCoy look. - R.C.

5:22 p.m.: The threat of rain and lightning is passing and the players are on the field - in pads. For starters, they're going through some coverage drills. - R.C.

5:17 p.m.: We are in a hold pattern because of nearby thunder and lightning. Fans are still streaming in and it looks like players are returning to the field. - I.K

Is this the same sequence that's described below....where Blount scores on 4th down?

Just getting to practice. Can follow me @jtkennedyiii if you want, much to the ridicule of my gf.

Got back a while ago. Today's observations:

Freeman was throwing darts out there today. He's really starting to look like he make all the throws a NFL QB has to make. He showed some more touch on his balls today but wasn't shy to put some zip behind it. During 7 on 7 he threw a great deep post to Williams over the arms of a DB and on the next play threw a perfect 10 yard out to the outside shoulder of his receiver. He showed last season that he has the mental makeup to make good decisions on the field and his arm is looking to follow suit.

Benn was out running routes and doing some sprints while the O/D units were going. It looks like they are trying limit him from contact because the only practice I saw him fully participate in was on Saturday when they went helmets only. The rest of WRs look like they should be able to hold their own though and still be able to spread defenses out enough to keep them focusing solely on Williams should Benn have to miss any time.

RBs look like it's going to be pretty close to a full blown RBBC. Lumpkin and Graham got ALL of the pass pro reps during individuals. All of them. When running 1st team O vs D there was a constant rotation of backs. Lumpkin runs with great pad level and hits the hole quickly. He also has displayed decent ability out of the backfield as a receiver. He will be a great compliment to Blount's style. Graham also looked extremely quick out on the field for an old former FB. He danced around a bit more than I'm sure his coaches would like but looked explosive none the less. Furthermore, when they got down to the GL, Bradford came in. It looks like the coaches liked what they saw on Monday during GL practice. Like I said, Bradford seems to do the least amount of dancing behind the line.

Mike Williams and WInslow both had TD receptions during full team practice from 2 yards out (they got a TD and put the ball at the 2 for a couple of plays). They honestly didn't look that great trying to pound it in and were more successful passing it down there. Definitely a good sign for Freeman and Bucs receivers owners. They might be in a situation like GB where they still look to pass often near the GL. Highlight of the day for me was on a play from 2 yards out. Freeman took the snap and was flushed out to his right. Everyone was covered well by the D when he turned around and skied a ball back across his body towards the back of the endzone. Winslow had come all the way from the backside of the play and soared above his defender to pluck the ball out of the air and tap two feet in bounds. Was really an awesome play. There is a definite connection between Freeman and Winslow and if they can make magic like this happen then it's going to be a really exciting duo to watch. That's all for now, I'll be back out there Thursday and get back to you all in the mean time if I remember anything else.
