Bucs trying to trade #4 and Simeon Rice to the Lions for #2? (1 Viewer)

I imagine that would at least get the Lions attention. Problem is, moving down would presumably be to draft Gaines Adams. If they took on a DE in a trade, then that would kind of make the play more for Quinn (???) which I don't see the Lions doing.Presuming the Bucs are wanting to trade up to #2, that means they've fallen in love with a guy they doubt will be there at 4. I'm assuming it's Calvin Johnson. That said, I don't see Cleveland or Detroit drafting Johnson, so I would imagine that Tampa feels there are some other folks willing to trade up to 2 if Russell comes off the board as expected at #1.
Talk radio also says they really like Willis. Rice and Willis for the #2 would fill 2 holes big time.

As a Lions fan, my first feeling is "YES!" we could use a top DE like Rice. But he is indeed getting up there in age, and last year worries me a bit (durability).

So my second feeling is to just pass on that offer... sure, we could still pick up a top player at #4, or HOPEFULLY trade down even more. But I'm not sure Rice = worth dropping 2 spots...

Of course, the rumors are that the Cardinals have entered the fray with their pick at #5. Not sure why the Cardinals would want to move to #2 as they are set at WR and set at WB.

ATL is rumored to be interested and the thought is that Blank wants CJ to stay in the market and play for the home town club.

Detroit will see what they feel is the best offer and take it before the draft. If Willis is their target, I could see the move for picks with ATL.

If OL or DE is the target, a trade with TB makes more sense. Of course, TB would have to pony up a 2nd or at worst a 3rd to go with Rice and the #4 for the #2 owned by Detroit.

If TB moves up to two before the draft, then two things:

1. They are truly worried that someone will trade into the 2 spot and pick CJ

OR

2. They figure at the #2 they are happy with either CJ or Quinn, and don't want to risk losing both before they pick at #4

A buddy sent me an email saying that...

Atlanta has a firm offer to Detroit of their 1st, 2 2nds, and a 1st next year for Detroit's 1 and 4 this year--supposing Calvin is there

My buddy isn't some kind of insider or anything just a football junkie

I heard this, but not with the 08' 1st. I guess it was reported on some radio station.

I highly doubt Tampa does anything (if at all) until after Oakland picks. Makes no sense to trade up just to see Oak take Johnson.

All I know as a Lions follower, is that I will be hoping like hell the Raiders take Russell. If CJ is still on the board at #2 overall, they'll rape someone. Imagine the Bucs and Falcons will battle it out to get to #2 overall.

I would love to see the Falcons set their franchise back about 5 years by giving up a ton of draft picks to move up. It's not like they have a QB that can get him the ball.

Which is why the Bucs should make the trade now, if they are going to do it, IMO.Worst case...if CJ is taken at #1...I would hope the Bucs would then be able to trade the #2 pick for more than they gave away to someone who covets Russell.

Easy to say this, but realistically, which teams in the top ten need a QB? As a Lions follower, this is the real problem should the Raiders take CJ.

Atlanta is the one team that has enough juice to land that pick at 1.02. I am sorry but Rice or a player like him...older veteran with few years left and an average to large salary...is not what the Lions need nor is that player enough. That is not going to get it done. The team needs picks...lots o'picks...and the Falcons have the leverage to get something done. I'd say Millen probably has a couple of if, then scenarios in place with a few of teams. Now, the Raiders just need to take Russell.

I do not foresee Millen making a trade before the draft. That is a lose-win for the Lions unless the offer is just too good to be true. That offer being something like what the Falcons could throw out. Waiting means that the Lions can move CJ at his highest point of draft value...when the Lions would be on the clock...or the team can stand pat and take BPA with their 1.02. There is no incentive to sell that pick short right now. Millen is not that dumb.

The slot at 1.08 probably removes the team from taking Adams or Thomas but the Lions could snatch L. Landry...best defensive player in the draft...or Willis...far better slot for him. The class is deep enough on the defensive side of the ball that the Roar could come back and address several needs in the 2nd round.

I'll wet myself if Millen pulls that off on draft day with the Falcons.

Arguably:Cleveland, Minnesota, and Miami.

I agree that there is no way the Lions should trade this pick before at least 14 minutes have expired while they are on the clock. I fully expect the Lions to sit through their entire time allotment fielding offers. Best offer, gets the pick.As a Lions fan, I’m getting the feeling that the Raiders control their first two rounds. I understand Martz like this Trent Edwards character as a potential second round pick. I also have heard the Raiders like him, in the event they take CJ #1 overall. If the Raiders take CJ #1 overall, they may screw the Lions in round one AND round two. There is a lot riding on who the Raiders take as it relates to the Lion’s draft. I’m assuming the Raiders will begin negotiations with CJ and Russell early next week. Hopefully they’ll have Russell signed by Friday night. That would give the Lions a good 12 hours plus just fielding trade offers from teams and playing one team off the other. Like to see the Bucs and Falcons get into a bidding war over the course of 12 hours.

Forgot about Minny. If CJ goes #1 overall, I doubt the Browns would give up much to move up a spot considering they are guaranteed either Russell or Brady. Didn't Minny spend a 2nd round pick on a QB last year? They'd have to give up a ton to move from seven to two. Not sure that is realistic for them.

I agree with you. I also do believe the rumors that the Lions would like to consummate a deal well before the draft. It makes sense. I think they want to trade down, and would rather take a bit less now, perhaps, and ensure they get something, than wait till the Raiders pick. I agree that the #2 loses a lot of its trade value, if not all of it, if CJ goes #1.

If the Lions are set on Gains Adams, could do a 3 way trade with Tampa and Atl. There are plenty of guys to target at #8 that I would take.

I think the Raiders will do all that they can to keep an advanced signing quiet, if at all possible, should Russell be their guy. Just a little competitive take that from Al & Co. back to their peers. Now, is that actually possible in this day and age? Most likely not and the Lions will probably have a solid 24-48 to get something tentative in place. I can still see another team, though, waiting and coming in draft day and taking that pick over that 15 minute span. Even if C. Johnson is the Raiders guy, I can see the Lions having an alternate plan of attack and 24-48 hours to get it done.

The fact that the Lions have been so silent on this leads me to believe that Millen has a strategy in place and already has mutliple business partners tied to specific scenarios. I have not seen any articles planted...sorry...written for the sake of creating or giving the Lions leverage. Hey, it could all fall through or Millen could fail to get them to sign on the line that is dotted but this situation could not be teed up any better for the Lions.
