Buffalo Bills Jairus Byrd out indefinitely (1 Viewer)

How long is indefinitely? This is obviously a loss for Byrd owners, but it re-opens the door for Donte Whitner and it brings George Wilson to the forefront of solid IDP production. Keep in mind, he had 70 solos, 4 INTs and 2 sacks after starting 2009 on the outside, looking in. Those are the two big winners IMO. I see Whitner moving in at FS with Wilson playing SS. Bryan Scott will see more time on the field, as opposed to before the injury to Byrd, but I'm not sure where he fits in and when. I see him as a better LB than S, but I'm not sure where he fits in with the new 3-4 approach? He'll be used, but as to his extent, that's yet to be determined.

Looks like George Wilson will play. Since he's been the second team FS throughout camp and George Edwards seems to like what Whitner brings at SS, it's reasonable to assume that Wilson will play FS.

The Bills are saying Byrd's return for opening weekend is uncertain. I think it's unlikely that we'll see him for Week 1 and that he may not be ready for full time duty until a month or more into the season. His durability after groin surgery last year was suspect, too, so he'll be a big risk to finish the season healthy regardless of when he returns.

Jene I respect your opinion, so if you think Whitner plays SS and Wilson FS, let's look at that angle. In this case - which player do you feel has the upper hand at more production?

I don't think there's room for two ultra-productive safeties with Davis one of the better run-stopping 3-4 ILBs in the league and Posluszny a likely strong pursuit backer on the weak side. If you're betting on one, it would be the strong safety. If it's Whitner, it's possible that Wilson plays well enough to make both players so-so options (as Wilson is a better run supporter than Byrd) with Whitner a somewhat better option. If it's Wilson at SS, I think he's got a chance to do what the Bills' SS du jour did last year.

yeah Whitner has been at SS all along with Bryan Scott backing him up. Byrd/Wilson are the two free safeties.Wilson certainly should benefit from this. When Byrd comes back, I wouldn't be surprised to see a bit of a split with Wilson seeing some time on run downs and Byrd filling in during passing downs. Byrd was a pretty terrible tackler and run defender last year.
