Bunting: Can we do it to Cabrera (1 Viewer)

I think about these things way too much. But can Ellsbury, Victorino, and others bunt Cabrera to death? It'd move him right back to the DH position, and force a decision about Martinez and Avila at the catcher position. I know that people hate sac bunts -- I generally do, too. And bunts just seem so lame. But against Scherzer and Verlander, why the heck not? These aren't the '03, '04, '07 Sox. I'd do it. Let's see...

VMart is not catching, bunt all you want. Cabrera plays in on most batters, you won't have as much success as you'd think.

I know he's not catching, man. But if we can bunt him to death, and render him useless at third, you might possibly move Cabrera to the DH slot, and then you have the Martinez/Avila question. I know it's far-fetched, but I'd watch Victorino and his aching thumb with an eagle eye if I were Detroit.

Cabrera WILL NOT BE DHING. There is no VMart/Avila question, it won't happen. Avila is one of the best game callers in baseball and had a 953 OPS in September, he's going to catch. Cabrera has been hurt for months and has really only played 3B, this isn't going to change if the entire Red Sox team bunts every at bat.

Okay, Dr. D. You know better than I do. I just see him and think, "wounded animal..."

Trying to bunt on him might be a gameplan, I just don't think it forces a position change. Ellsbury is one of the big keys to the series, if Tigers can shut him down or at least keep him in check...they might have a chance.

this is a dumb thread
Fair enough. It struck my mind. I never start threads, so now I'm :sadbanana:

But I'll stick by it. Watch Ells and Victorino.

I'm just excited; think it'll be an interesting series. I see benches emptying at least once or twice, for some reason.

eta* can we at least wait until it plays itself out for a few days before referring to the thread and Cabrera's medical condition as "dumb"?

I can see the NL teams bunting it at Cabrera all day long, the Sawks? nah

what was avilas OPS the other 5 months of the year? pretty horrible Im guessing

Victor Martinez caught three games this season. Why would they even entertain that idea? He hasn't been a viable catcher in five years.

I think you'll likely see a couple extra bunts this series, it's a perfectly viable strategy, even if it doesn't force any position changes.
