It use to be based on your mikes flown..,now it's based on your $ spend at least with AA and probably Delta. AA Barclays CC ($99 annual fee) gets you "preferred" (group 5) boarding. The AA Citi Executive Mastercard ($595 annual fee) doesn't give you boarding privileges but can get you to the higher status levels with 5x and 10x points (per dollar spending...doesn't have to be AA related) and gets you into the AA lounges and priority check-in lines. Money talks.

I have a smaller territory now and don't do much flying anymore, maybe 2-3 trips a year. I could tell horror stories for a while about flight delays, changes, sleeping in airports, etc. I recently had what is my only good and will be my best flight story ever and saw this thread again so feel like I have to share.

Back in April I was flying AA from Philly (my usual airport) direct to DFW for work on a Monday at 12:35. I got the usual message asking if I would be willing to take a bump with four amounts listed and usually just hit the highest number and never hear anything. The flight was clearly oversold and just as they were starting to board, they called me up and confirmed I volunteered for a bump. "Yes, but it was for the max." "Yep, that's where we're at." I asked when the next flights were, and they also had direct flights at like 2:30 and like 3:45 and I would be on one of those.

I asked if I could at least get a seat that was not a middle. She typed for a bit and said that they only had middles left. I said, ok at long as I can get on one of those two filghts, I was fine with it. She was typing for what seemed like 10 mins as we chatted and joked while she was looking. Finally, she looks at me and says, I took care of you and smiles. First time I've ever been bumped to, or ever been on, first class, for the next flight, in less than two hours at this point. And not only is it first class, but this flight is now on a 787, so its individual lay flat seats which I was only in once before on upgraded business flight to London.

As I'm queued up in the jetway I look back in the line and see a tall (~6'3") guy by himself that looks like Cole Hamels. But it can't be Cole Hamels, right? We're in Philly and nobody has said anything, and no one is looking at him. I do a quick search, and it looks like he was just a guest in the booth for a Phillies game last night and he lives in TX now. But no one is even looking at him. I get on the plane and he's across first class so I'm not that close but now I'm pretty sure it's him. I try to time it to walk back out at the same time but miss. I just hang around waiting for him to come out to see. I don't want to draw attention or make a scene, so I just walk up and say something like, "Hey, I just wanted to say thank you for 2008". He gets a big smile and he's like, "Yeah, it was alot of fun for us too!" I say I don't want to draw attention, but can I get a quick pic with him, and I do and say thanks and walk off, so I don't take up any more of his time.

I head down to baggage claim and he's just standing there waiting for his bag, again with no one noticing. I walk up and asked him about the ballcap he had on that I didn't recognize and it's from a golf course he plays at. We end up talking for about 10-15 minutes while waiting for bags about what he's up to now, how he liked announcing, mostly coaching our kids in sports (baseball/soccer/etc, he was a mostly soccer player until he grew), etc. Just a super awesome guy and a great experience meeting one of my Philly sports heroes.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention the credit for the < 2 hr bump up to first class was $1,125. :brush:

On the plane, heading to Phoenix through Thursday. Despite being Executive Platinum on AA, expecting to get upgraded is always a mistake. Today I was 6th on the upgrade list on a plane that has 20 FC seats. This is my 31st flight of the year and I think I have been upgraded once. I gave it to my wife as it was a personal trip.

At least I get to board with group 1, no cost for seat assignment so I always get exit row aisle or an aisle at the front of steerage (which is where I am now), and free bag chec And you better be damn sure I am going to be ordering the $12 Tray Table Tapas box (comped as an EP) and a few of the $10 airport bottles of Woodford Reserve (comped) to help myself feel better while sitting in coach!

But I would still like to get upgraded some of the time. It doesn’t help flying out of a hub (Miami). I have mostly butt-in-seat miles to get me here but there are plenty of people sitting at EP based on CC spend alone. When everyone is EP, no one is EP. :kicksrock:
If you actually want to get upgraded more often, here's how you game it a bit as an EP, without doing more spend, because spend is king.

Fly at non-business times. My upgrade %s were higher in the following situations:
  • Saturdays > any other day of the week
  • Midday > morning or evening
  • Midweek > Monday or Thursday
  • Booking earlier - most upgrades are confirmed 72 or 96 or 48 hours out, so even when I was CK there were often EPs who had been upgraded ahead of me because they got the upgrade confirmed a day or two before I even booked a last minute flight
  • Flights to smaller economy locations > flights to business hubs
  • Flights to other airline hubs > flights between AA hubs
  • Flights to vacation destinations > flights to business destinations
  • Flights to vacation destinations on days most people probably can't take off yet > the evening before a long weekend or something
Rough order of days I found upgrades most likely: Saturday any time > Sunday morning > Tu/We/Fri > Sunday evening > Mon/Th

Also, regarding AA, it's all about the credit card now. The guys I know who have been concierge key for years have switched to United because they still base status pretty much on miles. Now that AA is basing so much on credit card spend, it's really hard to get good status with just miles flown. They rank the EP's based upon their spend, so even if there's a ton of them, if your spend is more, you'll be ranked ahead of them. I know for the last couple years I was always 1-3 on the upgrade list as an EP.

I fly a LOT of miles and have never had concierge key. I got it this year but I also spent a crud ton on that card. I had almost 600,000 loyalty points on AA last year (I have about 300,000 so far this year). That was enough to get me there.

Yeah CK is and always has been about spend for my adult lifetime (last 10 years we'll call it). Credit card spend counts for less than actual direct spend, but it still counts at whatever that conversion is. CK's are ranked on spend too (and PPro, and Plat, etc). For example last year I was CK with 750k loyalty points and have never had their CC and therefore never spent a dollar on it. AA has standardized everything to the loyalty point, which is just a dollar of spend with modifiers. Harder to hack around and more directly rewards what theyre trying to incentivize - stuff that makes them money.

Considering AA is the airline with the highest debt load, I'm sure they are focused on paying that down and trying to get their stock price up. I do have their CC (AAdvantage Executive that gives me Admirals Club access) with about 200,000 loyalty points so far this year but that doesn't get me jack when it comes to upgrade priority.

That’s strange. 200k at this point should put you near the top of the EP list. I’m surprised you aren’t upgraded more.

The last few weeks took me to Phoenix, Chicago, Nashville and Las Vegas. Some work, some fun.

The next few weeks will be in Napa Valley, San Francisco, San Diego, and Dallas, TX. I'm about 1k from hitting Executive Platinum with AA for the year again. In the future, I think I am going to stop buying the absolute lowest class of service tickets when I am travelling for work because they have ZERO flexibility when wanting to change, other than same-day flight changes. That has cost me a little over the last couple of trips, so the slightly higher expense may help mitigate that (and increase my chances of getting upgraded?

The JW Marriott Desert Ridge was a nice property, although I was there for a conference, so I didn't get to experience it that much as a resort. The golf course looked nice, and the grounds were beautiful. I stumbled across a fabulous little garden that they have there that is right outside the gym/spa entrance. On the second day, I was able to speak with the gardener for a bit about the seasonality of the growing season there (it was 110+ while I was there during mid-day hours). They do utilize some of the produce and herbs that they grow for use in some of the restaurants and bars (for drink garnishes) so that was cool.

I also stayed at the DoubleTree in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The best things going for it were the chocolate chip cookies at check-in, naturally, and the fact that it was right across from the outlet stores, so my son and wife were able to spend some time there shopping at Lululemon. It's a hit with guys and girls alike now. Overpriced as all get out, but I do have a Lululemon workout shirt that I really like. I found it at Goodwill. I'll stay with that resource (or Ebay) in the future if I'm going to buy any more.

Also stayed at the Four Seasons in Nashville. It's only the 2nd Four Seasons I have stayed at, but damn, they're nice. It's not a place I want to spend $$$$ to stay at every time, but for special occasions, they know how to do it. The General Manager actually followed up on the survey that I filled out after I got home. Glad to see that my appreciative words were heard.

DM if you want to say hi in Dallas. I'm very close to SMU if you're actually in the city at all.

Heading to Hawaii tomorrow with my GF (work + fun), playing upgrade roulette and hopping to get the upgrade to Delta One through status instead of using upgrade certs (currently 1 & 2 out of 5 seats so looking good). But its the redeye back that really matters, I might need to splurge on that one if its getting tight closer to the return.

Wrapping up my time in Indianapolis. Quick overnighter. Got here around 4pm yesterday and currently at the airport headed home. Stayed downtown, and it was a nice, vibrant downtown. Wish I had another day/night here. But good gravy, overnight/valet parking at my hotel (Aloft) was $52!!!! I don't think I've ever spent so much for hotel parking. I mean, $20... 30? But $52? I thought the toothless valet chick was saying "fifteen" and not "fifty two" when I was dropping the car out front. :oldunsure:

Had some dooooope "stuffed breadsticks" at a sports pub downtown last night. I've been fighting off a sinus infection and had to get up at 5am PST this morning, so didn't go too crazy with the IPAs. Ate at St. Elmo's "sister location" (that does lunch) today with a coworker and business partners/clients. Real good filet.... but I'm already hungry again :bag:

Was just at Hilton in Waikiki, $69 for self parking, $89 for valet. :ROFLMAO:

Also - got stuck in Denver on my way back to Orange County. For those of you that have flown in/out of John Wayne Airport, you know there's a curfew. I wasn't able to make my connection in Denver due to weather so I spent the night there. My offshore travel advisors told me the closest hotel with rooms was downtown! So I had to pay $100 in Ubers there/back to airport. What a mess.

I'm back at the office for what seems like an excruciating amount of time, 6 weeks, before my next trip (to Montreal in October).

I'm not sure how I am going to handle that. I don't think I have had to go into the office more than two or three weeks in a row since the beginning of the year.

I hate the commute, which is usually 45 minutes in the morning and at least an hour in the afternoon. We do have WFH on Fridays, but that's not enough.

Pray for me. 🙏

New job, back on the horse! Little Miami overnighter tomorrow.

New job very different. Much more autonomy. No booking system. Was told "book whatever here's a card we trust you."

Book whatever flight. Whatever hotel. Car or Ubers don't care.

I said no worries I wouldn't blow it at the strip club and he said well as long as you take the head of the site out, whatever is fine! LOL.

It is exceptionally refreshing. Although I do secretly hope there's a way to have to use my own card and get reimbursed for the points game...

Oof, good luck. I honestly can’t figure out how I was able to do the daily commute for so long. No doubt it impacted my relationships and overall life. It’s hard to make up for 2hrs a day every day.

I decided today was a good day to work from home. It started raining pretty hard about 5 minutes before I left so I made the executive decision that I shouldn't be risking life and limb to get to work. It took about 15 seconds to convince myself. And the fact that yesterday, when I was in the office, it felt like a ghost town, and most of the team I manage is virtual anyway.
