Buy Low on Brees? (1 Viewer)

Coming off a terrible game on Monday Night, im sure owners are none too happy with him right now. Going into the Bye week, just dips his value even more.

Brees through out his career has been a very solid QB.

Things can not get much worse there. In Sean Payton's world, Losing McAllister means more passing.

and its not like the remaining games are that tough. Carolina and ATL twice. ARI, SF, STL, Houston.

Im up in the air on this. I can see things playing out both ways. NO can still win that division and make the playoffs. But they can also fall apart and be last years Radiers.

Let me here what you guys are thinking on this one...

[hijack]Brees had a couple of pretty bad years in San Diego before he turned it around in 2005. He would have lost his job to Rivers if Rivers hadn't held out. Last night looked A LOT like the Brees SD homers knew and hated back then...[/hijack]

I traded for McNabb before the Detroit game and half the owners scoffed...so far so great after one week.

The Brees owners are probably pretty disgusted right now, if you can get him cheap enough it seems like a good gamble to me...

I am thinking about going after him in a couple of leagues, but I am looking at it more on a situational basis.1) In a league where I am emplying a QBBC or my #2 QB is perceived to be where he is, I am going to offer that QB to the Brees owner. If Brees doesn't rebound I won't take too big of a hit, but if he starts returning to form, I plug him right back in. Example: If I have two of the following on my team... Romo / Big Ben / Young / Bulger . I would try to trade for Brees.2) But in a league where my #1 is one of the listed above, and my #2 is someone like Garrard / Green / Schaub. I wouldn't trade my #1 QB for him.

Brees didn't suddenly forget how to play. Dude has no time in the pocket this year. The few times he has gotten protection and been able to step up in the pocket ... he does fine. The Saints O-line is getting killed right now, and Pro Bowl LT Jammal Brown is playing pretty dinged up.

The OP said he'd been very solid throughout his career which in my opinion is not the case. You're right about Brees having no time in the pocket. They were all over him. I don't think he's forgotten how to play but the three games he's played this year make me wonder a bit. I am definitely seeing flashes of the 03-04 Brees.

I just received an offer for Brees and Losman.

offer was Delhomme and Garrard.

also have d.anderson on my roster.

at 3-0 I can wait on Brees to produce, but at this point, I am not sure he will because the o-line has been so bad.

thoughts ?

You bumped two Brees threads for ACF questions?Go away please.

I'll tell you if you rate my draft and WDIS, TIAGB all the AC questions still going on in this forum

Sorry your opinion is wrong. He had one shaky year (03 I think). His first year (starter) wasn't great but not bad and the rest has been very good.Anyway I agree he's a great buy-low right now.

I had the years wrong in my previous post. His bad years were 2002 and 2003. In 2002 Brees was 24th in the league with a 76.9 passer rating for the season. In 2003 he was 29th in the league with a 67.5 passer rating for the season (i.e., he sucked). He would have lost his job to Rivers in 2004 - the year he turned it around - if Rivers had not held out.

he was only drafted in 01 and played in 1 game that year. So yeah his first 2 full seasons werent great, nut what do you expect for a young kid with that SD O?

Who were thier WR's back then? Boston and Caldwell?

Just gave up Rivers and Chris Brown for Brees and Bowe. Mark me down as one person that believes he'll turn it around.

Yeah, Boston and Caldwell were there. Tim Dwight, Eric Parker. They brought in McCardell in 2004.

Brees has ample weapons, a favorable schedule, and should be playing from behind much of this season. I would classify Brees as a buy low with great upside.

I am (was) a disgrunted Brees and just traded him for an offer I couldn't refuse:

I gave Brees/Edwards for Chad Johnson/Pennington

We start 2QB's and my other QB's are Palmer and Hassleback

I just offered Cutler straight up for Brees.

Why is the o-line going to suddenly turn it around?
The NFL Live guys had an interesting take on it. Basically on half of the NO passing plays, they we running play action to a RB. However the Titan LBs didnt bite at all. They knew the pass was coming. Practically started dropping back on the snap.Mainly this was due to the lack of a NO ground game from the get go and that both brees and the backs looked awful on the play action fake.Hopefully payton is smart enough to just take this package out now. Play Brees from a shotgun, spread the field. Work in Draws for your running plays.I think Payton is smart enough to get this team rolling. I Hope

If you can get him at a reasonable price and stash him as your QB2, I'd go for it.

If you'd be acquiring him as a QB1, I'd be very hesitant at this point.

Brees owner...VERY disgruntled, but, I'm going to hold on to him. I'll be plugging in Favre the next couple of weeks hoping that Brees and the rest of the Saints can figure things out over the bye week (Bush owner as well).

I believe the entire league got a good look at the offense the Saints were running last year in the playoffs. Payton (not sure about his staff) is a rookie coach that isn't skilled in the art of "switching things up" from year to year. Also, the entire league got to see Chicago's defensive scheme vs. the Saints in the NFC Champ' Game (NO only scored 14 points).

With all of that being said, I'm going to hold on to Brees in hopes that Payton and his offensive staff figure things out during the bye week.

I was just offered Big Ben for Brees...I declined.

Wow, scary. I just offered the same exact trade to someone else too.

Wasn't part of Payton's problem as an offensive coordinator due to the fact his offensive schemes were too bland and predictable? Perhaps last year was a fluke and we're seeing his true colors...if that's the case I'm not sure I would count on Brees turning into a viable star.

been offered LJ and Brees for Lynch and Eli - would do it but its a keeper league so hesitating - but shows you the way the value is swinging -

He only had one bad year in SD; 2003. That's the year that prompted SD to look QB in the '04 draft. It was probably the year the SD line looked the worst for him as well. He's never reacted to pressure especially well. I think his size(or lack of it) contributes to his trouble with a pass rush. For a guy his size you'd expect him to be nimble enough to at least drift outside the pocket to find players down field but he really doesn't do that. When he leaves the pocket he can only hit short route runners on the move and stops looking down field.

Im trying to deal for Brees in my league. The owner is 0-3 and looking to make moves. I think Brees and the saints explode after the bye week. The schedule is soft and the Saints are a very talented offensive team.

It really can't get much worse, and Brees will probably be chucking the ball a ton. Maybe not great for NFL terms, but good for fantasy. I don't expect him to throw 4 INTs per game either - they'll be there, but so will a bunch of yards and TDs.

keep in mind, that they started off with 3 tough teams

the bye week comes just in time

D's will start to wear down as the season progesses and won't bring as much intense pressure

at least I like to tell myself this

I would have to say crazy.

I used to be a big fan of his, but I think his best years are behind him. He's turning into an INT machine.

I'm going to ride Brees into the ground if I have to....Not going to make any trades at this point. I think he will rebound, but the only question is whether I will be out of the league playoff picture when he decides to get it going. Lee Evan's disappearing act hasn't helped my team either. My worst start in 18 years of doing fantasy football............ If I can make the playoffs at this point, it might be one of my greatest FFL accomplishments. Hopefully the bye week will give the Saints a chance to get things together...get a little healthier... and roll on the rest of the competition this year!

Glad I found this thread, was wondering if others thought Brees was a good buy low or not. Some people here have posted what they've offered or been offered. Be interesting to know what others are getting him for. Going to check the Sportsline trade logs too.

There seems to be a lot of blind optimism going around in this thread.
Well, a point that has been made by a lot of poeple and I feel like is important to point out is that most people who are trading for him are giving up their #2 QB for him, not relying on him for a QB1.Right now his value seems to be somewhere between Big Ben, Jay cutler, and Eli

This is the same guy that looked so good in the pre-season. If the Saints OL can improve, Brees will improve. At least I hope he will.

Having just traded for Drew Brees last week and having that same Drew Brees cost me my 3-0 start....I am hoping that I simply acquired him a bit early.

An offensive unit just doesn't drop off the map that fast.

I'm hoping that Brees and the Nawlin's offensive picks it up...soon....

Until then....I'll be relying on J. Cutler.

Peter King just started shoveling dirt on the Saints' coffin this morning.

Buy Brees, buy Bush, buy Colston. Buy, buy, buy!!!

Going to try to get him. I'm not going to count on Favre to keep looking this good forever, and I think Brees will improve. How much, is the question.

He was just cut in a re-draft league of mine. I want to pick him up but with Tony Romo on the roster and my backup(Cutler) haveing a better matchup on Romo's bye week than Brees, I'm torn.

For whatever it's worth, my offer of Cutler for Brees got turned down. (0.05 pt / yd passing, 0.1 pt / yd rushing, 4 pt passing TD, -1 interception)

Bulger is struggling as well and i was thinking of trading Bulger for Brees straight up. who's got better upside? it was mentioned that Brees has a fairly easy schedule coming up and Bulger is dinged up. who do you have more faith in?

On top of what MaxPower wrote above: The bye week gives LT Jammal Brown's knee and finger time to heal up (though I do think his knee won't be right without a full off-season of recovery). Of course, the other guys on the O-line are having trouble pass blocking, as well.Hey, this same line played very well last year. If the guards Nesbit and Evans, and right tackle Jon Stinchcomb, can't reclaim their 2006 form, talented and hungry rooks Zach Strief and Andy Alleman are waiting in the wings. Sure, those young guys aren't slam dunks to be upgrades ... but if the guys ahead of them keep failing, a change is likely to be made.

I was thinking of offering Bulger for Brees as well. Since I have Big Ben as my backup,...or starter, I feel that I can afford it. Who is your other QB(s)? As far as who do I have more faith in, I'm 50-50 on this one, I just don't know if it's a good move or not. With Bulger's ribs and SJax out a spell, I'd guess lean toward Brees a little. My potential trading partner has Shaub for his QB2, so I don't know if he'd accept the trade, I wouldn't frown on it if he declined. :fishing:

I think he's in for a rough year. He has no time in the pocket and no one with deep speed since Horn is gone. So he's left completing passes at 5 yards per, which is AWFUL.

I get the feeling that last year was a fluke..... with no Duece and no Horn (I know he didn't play much but he is a great Locker room guy); the heart and soul of that team is gone.

and no one with deep speed since Horn is gone
That wasn't Horn's role - he worked the short sideline routes to perfection. The speed guys (Henderson mainly) are still around ... but there's no time for the deep routes to develop.

The Saints have been awful for 18 of the last 20 years. I'm not sure why we're all of a sudden supposed to expect them to be a winning franchise, especially with all the injuries.

I play in a 2QB league and my other starter is ASmith/Grossman/Tarvaris. So i was hoping Bulger could carry the weight for both QBs since my other QBs suck. I poorly playing Bulger is really starting to put a cramp on my team because now i'm getting pretty much nothing out of 2 QBs. The only reason i'm hesitating on proposing the trade is that Bulger did have one decent weak, wherer Brees has been a disappointment every week. The loss of McAllister will probably reslut in a little more passing, but i don't know if that's a good thing
