Calvin Johnson may stay in school if OAK wants him (1 Viewer)

(Rotoworld) Georgia Tech junior wide receiver Calvin Johnson is reportedly gauging the Raiders' interest in him, and may elect not to declare for the NFL Draft if Oakland seems poised to take him No. 1 overall.

Impact: This appears to be a stretch, considering he'll be guaranteed roughly $25 million. NBC's Peter King reported Saturday that Oakland would likely choose LSU quarterback JaMarcus Russell with the top pick.

Calvin Johnson is NOT Eli Manning. If he is going to be the #1 pick, he is coming out.

This is so funny, a WR thinking he is going to pass up 1st pick money and go back to school to dictate where he plays in the NFL. You're a FRICKEN WR dude. Go back to school and have an off year, now your the number 6 or 7 pick and still on a ####ty team! Minus several million dollars.

Here's the whole article. You're fast Jeter, I was just about to post it.

I think Sean Jensen is full of crap and very carefully desourced this speculation but made it look sourced. Awful writing and stupid speculation, probably from a Minnesota hack who only knows the Raiders are bad and knows nothing about Calvin Johnson, who very clearly doesn't care where he plays and would love to go #1 overall.

Please, before you start slandering Johnson and belieiving everything you read, use your heads.

I never read where Eli was going to stay in school.

I don't blame him. Why go to that mess. #2 or #3 money would be fine.

The analogy is to Calvin trying to dictate where he gets chosen. If he is going to go #1, he will be happy to go anywhere.

Trade Moss and a 2nd rounder for Schaub and draft C. Johnson. He will be happy to catch passes from Schaub as Moss stinks it up in Atlanta with Vick. That's a no brainer. Look how he put up ordinary numbers with a hack like Ball and then put up his best game with Taylor Bennett.

Very

I like Franchise Mode too.

As a Minnesotan, I want you to know that Sean Jensen is a very solid beat reporter for the Vikings and does a very good job. I think he got that from the draft guy he mentioned earlier in the article.

Fine, and he wrote a nice article overall, but anyone following Calvin Johnson closely, and many are, know that this would be the ONE report in a thousand making any such suggestion while the other 999 say the exact opposite. Jensen should have been a little more careful, and the way I read it he quite clearly removed his anonymous source from that one particular comment.

WHy do I feel that Peter King has replaced Sean Salisbury as "Mr. Obvious" these days?

Oakland is poised to take Russell? Really? Wow.

Don't get me wrong, King says a lot of ridiculous stuff, but I think this is a little harsh - did you think it was so obvious before the game a few days ago? It's news.

I think it would be more than hilarious if the #2 pick took him... and since Millen is there for another year, I wouldn't put it past them :goodposting:

Coming from someone close to the GT program, CJ may stay but it won't be because of who may or may not draft him. This kid is not that kind of person. By all accounts, he really enjoys college, and education is very important to his family. I won't be shocked if he returns.

This is the first time I've heard anything to suggest that Calvin would stay just because he doesn't want to play for the Raiders. But it is far from the first time there's been talk that Calvin would stay for another year. I know I've seen some reports that he isn't really drawn by the NFL like some people are.

i think alot depends on who's gonna play QB next year at GT. He's dealt with 3 years of reggie ball's suckiness. Maybe he wants another year to have a chance to play with a decent passer.

and i wouldnt want to play in oakland either.

Assuming his family is at least ok financially, i can definetly see the appeal of going back to school. The money is gonna be there anyway, his stats will probably get a slight bump with the new QB, and college is fun. Of course, he could get hurt, but anyone can, at any time.

Exactly right. If he decides to finish school, I just don't want people saying he was avoiding the Raiders. That's silly. They've made it clear that isn't an issue. Gladly play for whoever drafted him. But, he may stay in school for other reasons. He does seem very grounded, a really fine young man, and I would hate to see him get anything associated with the Eli treatment if he stays in school.

none of this helps if the qb cant stay off his back. why do people forget an oline is half a teams offense? :goodposting:

I read elsewhere that CJ has a noon press conference today.

Per 790 the zone.

www.790thezone.com <----press conference is supposedly live here.

Maybe Johnson should look at Eli Manning before he tries to pull some maneuver here. Eli didn't want to play for San Diego because they were a floundering franchise, so now he's facing unrealistic expectations, playoff failure, and mounting pressure/criticism in New York while Philip Rivers is guiding the Super Bowl favorites and living in a gorgeous city with great weather and 1/10th of the pressure that comes along with playing in NY.

Good choice, Eli !

Moss and a 2nd rounder for Schaub? That's overpaying. Maybe Moss for a Schaub and a 2nd.

NFL | Georgia Tech WR Johnson NFL bound

Mon, 8 Jan 2007 09:23:50 -0800

ESPNews reports Georgia Tech WR Calvin Johnson will enter the NFL Draft.

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=2724240

ATLANTA -- Georgia Tech receiver Calvin Johnson announced Monday that he will enter the NFL draft, giving up his final college season for the chance to be one of the top players selected.

The decision was hardly a surprise. Johnson had long been expected to pass up his senior season with the Yellow Jackets, and he did little to change that perception during a brilliant junior season.

Johnson, likely the first wideout to be taken in April's NFL draft, was selected to The Associated Press All-America team and won the Biletnikoff Award as the nation's top receiver.

"It was the logical thing to do," said his father, Calvin Johnson Sr. "He would have been doing himself a disservice if he didn't go."

In his final college game, the younger Johnson had nine catches for 186 yards and two touchdowns in a 38-35 loss to West Virginia in the Gator Bowl. He finished with 76 receptions for 1,202 yards and 15 touchdowns.

Timing, baby, timing.

This was a non-story. Players have to declare WAY before the draft. No NFL team has to make a decision this early.
