Calvin Johnson - Roy Williams (1 Viewer)

Killer Kowalski reports this afternoon that Roy Williams tweaked his hammy during the first morning of minicamp. Nothing too serious, hopefully, and he looked to be in midseason form up until that moment.

Calvin Johnson is quick and smooth while running and cutting, as expected.

Also, Kevin Jones did some running on the sidelines, an excellent indication he might be 100% by the start of the season. :lmao:

Roy Williams sat out of today's practice and isn't expected to participate tomorrow, the final day of the three day minicamp.

:cry:

Whether Calvin or Roy is the 1a/1b doesnt matter in this case, if you neglect one of them to double the other your in bad shape. I dont see why both can't kill it. Martz is like icing on the cake for this duo. Roy should reap the benefits.

{small print}This is all pending pass blocking and QB play is not questionable every other week{small print}

Does Calvin Johnson even start this season? At any point? Mike Furrey is being totally overlooked by many. The guy did catch 90 passes last year and he is not automatically becoming a backup. They may just end up running a lot of 3 wide.

Look at Torry Holt's rookie year, the "third guy" Az Hakim had more TDs than Holt. The discussion should be closer to Williams, Johnson/Furrey IMO.

He will start from day 1. Furrey will be the #3 WR/slot guy. I think there will be close to 4000 receiving yards to go around.Roy........1300CJ..........1100Furrey.......900TE/RB/#4WR........700

I disagree. Furrey is a nice player and all, but do you really think that the Lion brain trust is not going to want to have Calvin Johnson pay dividends right off the bat? On talent alone CJ gets the nod over Furrey, but given the Lions' recent history drafting WRs... I'm pretty sure that Calvin gets the ball. A lot.

What has Furrey done this offseason to lose his position to a guy that doesn't know the system and came into camp "out of shape"? Martz demands a lot from his WRs and Furrey has already shown that he can deliver. You don't sit down a guy on the bench who hasn't failed to produce and is healthy.Mike Williams sure didn't pay dividends right off the bat. And Charles Rogers isn't even in the NFL anymore. I don't say that to put light on Detroit's poor record of drafting very highly rated WRs (1/3 hit rate), but simply that they are unwilling to put a guy into the game just because of who he is and where he was drafted. Rogers and Williams both had plenty of opportunity to get playing time, but they failed. Not saying that Calvin is going to fail, just that he has to EARN the right to get in the game.Right now Furrey already has the trust of the coaching staff and has proven that he can deliver when put into the game. Eventually I would expect Calvin to takeover, but that may be more gradual than most people believe. Furrey represents the better draft value this year IMO. The more I think about it, the more I'm coming to the realization that CJ is probably not in one of the better places to grab a starting position out of the gate.

Dude, this shtick belongs in the FFA. First, who came into camp out of shape? Also, you're realllly underrating Calvin Johnson's skills and overrating Furrey. Calvin is one of the best prospects at WR since...who knows? You have to go way past Fitz to find one. If DET wants to have a shot at winning, Calvin is going to be on the feild. Not Furrey.

Marinelli

Johnson joins a revamped receiving corps built around Roy Williams and Mike Furrey, who combined for 180 catches, 2,396 yards and 13 touchdowns last season."Those are two men that proved what they can do last year," Lions coach Rod Marinelli said. "We don't need to ask what they are capable of doing, because they've done it. It is on film."
Martz
"When guys are trying to learn routes and depths and coverages and adjustments, everything just goes in slow motion," Martz said. "And that's to be expected, really. Things won't really make sense to them until halfway through (training) camp."
Johnson
"I've got to get in better shape for mini-camp," the Detroit Lions wide receiver said. "I didn't realize what the tempo of this was going to be like."
