Howdy,I haven't been around much as I don't work for FBG.com any longer, but I felt obligated to stop by today and sound off on Hackett. I was a big supporter of Hackett dating back a few years ago. I feel responsible for some of the excess hype and feel it would be irresponsible to not give an opinion with his recent success.First off all, I was glad to see him post some numbers this past few weeks, but I would be lying if I didn't say I was disappointed in what I saw yesterday. He had a chance to be great, and was only good. He dropped a touchdown pass that hit him in the chest. Yes, he was falling down / diving as the ball was coming in, but its a catch that should have been made. Secondly, he made a nice grab on the sidelines late in the game and didn't make the effort necessary to keep his feet in bounds. It would have been a great catch, but I didn't see the great effort necessary for it to be a reception. All this said, I'm seeing most of the same things that made me excited about his play years ago. He catches almost everything. His reception percentage is very high. Compare it to the other receivers in Seattle and you'll see what I mean.DJ Hackett 200724/33 = 73% of targets caughtD Branch 200726/43 = 60% of targets caughtB Engram 200760/89 = 67% of targets caughtN Burleson 2007 29/60 = 48% or targets caughtOh joy. A bunch of numbers. What's it all mean? I feel very good about Hackett's reception percentage. This is what I saw out of him when he was first drafted. He catches the ball when its near him. He fights for the ball. He'll go up and get it or drop down and dive if Hasselbeck throws him a less than perfect pass. He's got great hands.Happy happy joy joy Hackett-fest? Not so much. I was hoping by now that he would start to transform into a "great" receiver. I didn't see that yesterday, and he certainly had the opportunities. I'm probably being a bit too judgmental. I was sky high on him what seems like long ago. He's only started a handful of games. Will he make the transition into that "great" receiver? Time will tell. The injuries last last year and early this year haven't helped. Again, time will tell.Going forward I don't expect this same sort of production each week. His targets are going to drop a bit when Branch is fully healthy. I expect Branch to lead the team in targets out of the flanker position while Hackett leads the team in red zone targets. It was nice to see the Seahawks run plays for him into the end zone the past few weeks. I would comfortable calling Branch and Hackett a 1A and 1B combination. Branch will lead in catches while Hackett leads in TDs, but TDs are going to be coming more erratically and can't be planned for like the consistency I expect Branch to have. For the moment I have that vindication feeling because I took a lot of crap from people while promoting Hackett (you hearing me Woodrow?), but as always time will tell. Will he become great as opposed to just good? I hope so.
