Can DJ Hackett keep this up? (1 Viewer)

I am loving me some DJ Hackett these days. After picking him up as a free agent (after drafting him and cutting him after his injury) he has been responsible for a couple of victories for me.

Week 9 @ Cleveland 6 for 58 and 1 TD

Week 10 v. San Fran 8 for 101 and 1 TD

Week 11 v. Chicago 9 for 136 and 1 TD

Upcoming

Sun 11/25 at St. Louis

Sun 12/2 at Philadelphia

Sun 12/9 Arizona

Sun 12/16 at Carolina

Sun 12/23 Baltimore

Sun 12/30 at Atlanta

I like this schedule and I think he will continue to produce through the playoffs. What does the pool think?

Another Hackett owner here so I am probably a little biased but I totally agree about him staying studly. I think he is Seattle's best RZ threat and we can probably expect a TD more often than not in a pass happy Seahawks offense. I think he will continue to pull down 5-8 grabs as well. I don't think Branch will affect his production much.

I think it will be a different Seattle receiver every week. Next week I think it will be Branch's turn. Then maybe Engram, then back to Hackett.

I think you can definitely expect continued production from him -- the Seahawks have been pretty explicit about their intentions to pass their way to wins for the rest of the season, and Hackett is rapidly becoming a favorite target for Hasselbeck. You can't expect a TD every week, but he's probably a decent WR2/great WR3 from here on out.ETA: the schedule is obviously pretty money as well.

they will be chucking the ball a lot. they are in a playoff race. hackett has been the most productive since he returned. they will need his productivity...

But he's scored every week for the past three. What makes you think it's going to start spreading around now?
I second this question. It seems that he is the preferred receiver out of Branch, Engram, Burleson, even when they are all available.

Hackett has led the team in targets the last 2 weeks. I realize one of those weeks was without Branch but I think Hackett is probably the best fit for the west coast offense simply because of his size. Seattle is passing more and Hackett's production is increasing along with his targets. I think Hackett is clearly the best Seattle WR to own right now.

Howdy,

I haven't been around much as I don't work for FBG.com any longer, but I felt obligated to stop by today and sound off on Hackett. I was a big supporter of Hackett dating back a few years ago. I feel responsible for some of the excess hype and feel it would be irresponsible to not give an opinion with his recent success.

First off all, I was glad to see him post some numbers this past few weeks, but I would be lying if I didn't say I was disappointed in what I saw yesterday. He had a chance to be great, and was only good. He dropped a touchdown pass that hit him in the chest. Yes, he was falling down / diving as the ball was coming in, but its a catch that should have been made. Secondly, he made a nice grab on the sidelines late in the game and didn't make the effort necessary to keep his feet in bounds. It would have been a great catch, but I didn't see the great effort necessary for it to be a reception.

All this said, I'm seeing most of the same things that made me excited about his play years ago. He catches almost everything. His reception percentage is very high. Compare it to the other receivers in Seattle and you'll see what I mean.

DJ Hackett 2007

24/33 = 73% of targets caught

D Branch 2007

26/43 = 60% of targets caught

B Engram 2007

60/89 = 67% of targets caught

N Burleson 2007

29/60 = 48% or targets caught

Oh joy. A bunch of numbers. What's it all mean? I feel very good about Hackett's reception percentage. This is what I saw out of him when he was first drafted. He catches the ball when its near him. He fights for the ball. He'll go up and get it or drop down and dive if Hasselbeck throws him a less than perfect pass. He's got great hands.

Happy happy joy joy Hackett-fest? Not so much. I was hoping by now that he would start to transform into a "great" receiver. I didn't see that yesterday, and he certainly had the opportunities. I'm probably being a bit too judgmental. I was sky high on him what seems like long ago. He's only started a handful of games. Will he make the transition into that "great" receiver? Time will tell. The injuries last last year and early this year haven't helped. Again, time will tell.

Going forward I don't expect this same sort of production each week. His targets are going to drop a bit when Branch is fully healthy. I expect Branch to lead the team in targets out of the flanker position while Hackett leads the team in red zone targets. It was nice to see the Seahawks run plays for him into the end zone the past few weeks. I would comfortable calling Branch and Hackett a 1A and 1B combination. Branch will lead in catches while Hackett leads in TDs, but TDs are going to be coming more erratically and can't be planned for like the consistency I expect Branch to have.

For the moment I have that vindication feeling because I took a lot of crap from people while promoting Hackett (you hearing me Woodrow?), but as always time will tell. Will he become great as opposed to just good? I hope so.

Wow, Shick sighting.

In the red zone passing plays the last few games, it seems the 1st 2 options are DJ and Heller. Don't see that changing too much with Branch's health. His yardage totals will probably drop though.

Great post, Shick. I agree that he isn't "great" yet, but I am thrilled with his production because I am getting #2 production from a guy I picked up as a free agent a couple of weeks before he returned. Between him turning it on and Chris Henry hitting the ground running after his suspension (picked him up a month ago as a FA too) I am loving my WRs.

I think it is worth noting that there is probably some value in the fact that Henry and Hackett both have fresh legs now since they missed most of the season. That is probably a significant factor in their production.

They are still in a vegetative coma after an Eagles fan threw batteries at their heads.

Because Branch isn't in game shape yet, and because Alexander's potential return could reduce the numbers for all the Seattle WRs.

Alexander's return would only help the passing game. Meaning, if Alexander was in the lineup, they couldn't run at all.

you should post more.

I think MoMo will continue to get the rock for what little running game they have. Back to the point of the thread, I think Hackett will continue to do well but not put up the same eye-popping numbers of the last couple of weeks now that Branch is back. I am actually starting Evans in favor of Hackett this week (along with Colston).

For what it's worth, the way Hackett finished out the season last year made him my #2 WR sleeper. Both Holmgren and Hasselbeck really like him. There's no reason to think he won't remain consistent, barring injury.

My #1 sleeper?

Wes Welker.

It's why I have them both in my FBG staff league.

Once Hasselbeck makes a WR his favorite target, nothing will change that other than injuries.

So if DJ stays healthy, he will have 10+ targets every week.

I can't disagree with this enough. That's pace for 160+ targets for a season. No way. Not happening. Once Branch is back to full speed he's going to be the main target while Hackett is more of the red zone guy. I'd bet my left nut on it. Actually, my left nut isn't doing much in the way of making babies any longer (snip snip), so that's not saying much.

Hackett should have another good week this week. He looks healthy and should continue getting as many targets as anyone on the team. It wouldn't surprise me to see his number drop slightly as branch returns. But they will flip flop back and forth depending on who matt keys on from week to week. It wouldn't surprise me if for the last 6 games of the season branch/hackett will be within 2 or 3 catches of each other. Engrams numbers will probably suffer the most with the return of Branch.

What makes you say this? When Jackson went down last year, DJ and Branch both had 25 targets in the last 3 weeks. Not sure what I've seen recently that would indicate that would be different, other than Hackett being targeted more so far than last year.

Darrel Jackson.Incredibly consistent when healthy. DJ is now #1, Hasselbech will not change that . Say bye-bye to your left nut.

Regardless of who gets more targets between Branch and Hackett they should both be good options in the passing game. With Seattle emphasizing the pass so much, Hasselbeck should have about 45 pass attempts per game. Based on past results from this year, about 50% of his targets go to the #1 and #2 options in the passing game. THat leaves about 22 targets to split up between Branch and Hackett. I'm confident that both these guys can be effective options if they get double digit targets every game which appears to be a decent possiblity.

This assumes a lot. I don't think the Seattle offense is going to be successful enough to have that many passing attempts each game. They aren't going to go 6-0 the rest of the way. If they do, great, but I doubt it.Also, if I'm offering one of my balls I had better be seeing something more than a ####### finger. Maybe if it were the middle finger. That way I could mount it on my desk and aim it in your general direction. Is it sad if I just LOL at my own joke? Don't answer that.

It's probably on the high side. But so far this year they've averaged 66 plays/game, a few better than the average of 62/game. If they keep up the 66 pace, a 60/40 pass-run ratio would have them throwing 40 passes per game while a 2/1 ratio would have them throwing 44 passes per game. I would say 40 passes a game is certainly reasonable given the makeup of this team and even that would give Branch and Hackett a combined 20 targets/game which should be close to 50/50 split which makes them both very good WR options.
