Can NFL teams trade IR players? (1 Viewer)

Anyone know if this is allowed?

Can an NFL team trade a player that is currently on IR?

And, if so, can his new team activate him immediately?

Thanks in advance.

I wouldn't think so since if a player is on the IR he's not even on the roster. If a team traded someone that was supposedly hurt and was activated by another team, team A would be in deep crap for stashing a healthy player on the IR. If the player was indeed hurt, what team in their right mind would trade for him?

Players who are on IR are done for the entire season. They cannot be activated. So if a team was allowed to trade the player, unless there is some little known rule about trades that invalidates the IR status, the player would still be on IR and would still be out for the season. If I had to guess I would imagine that you could trade a player who is on IR. Though he is not on your roster, he is still under contract to you so I don't know why you couldn't trade him the same as any other player under contract. But I don't imagine many teams would want to trade for a player who wasn't yet healthy and able to pass their physical.

Not really.

Didn't Wil Demps get put on IR the year by NYG and then was released and subsequently picked up by HOU where he actually played out the year?

You can't cut a player when he is injured. I suspect he was hurt and placed on IR because they didn't want him on the team and couldn't cut him. After he was medically cleared he was cut. He can now be picked up by a team that wants his services and is not on IR anymore.

Really..Thats a big no no with the NFL..SPORTS PEOPLE: PRO FOOTBALL; N.F.L. Looks Into Injured Reserve Lists

Published: October 8, 1992

ROD MILSTEAD, a Cleveland Browns rookie, confirmed yesterday he was summoned to New York by the National Football League last week as part of an investigation into alleged misuse of the injured-reserve list. Milstead has been on injured reserve since Sept. 3 because of a nerve problem in his back. The N.F.L., he said, is trying to determine whether some teams are inflating their pool of available talent by placing healthy players on injured reserve. The penalty for a team caught stashing players on injured reserve reportedly could include losing a draft pick -- as high as a second-rounder. An N.F.L. spokesman, GREG AIELLO would not comment on Milstead specifically. However, he noted that the N.F.L. is attempting to police the common practice of putting young players on injured reserve with minor injuries.

"The Browns have no reason to be concerned. Everybody who was on I.R. was hurt," said Milstead, a guard acquired in an Aug. 25 trade with Dallas.

Most likely he was put on the waived-injured reserve list, which I think means that, 1) he has a monetary settlement like a workman's comp with his old team, and 2) once healthy, could be signed by any team except the team that cut him but after some time frame of like five weeks, the team that cut him could re-aquire him. How or who determines when a player is deemed healthy I wouldn't know.As to answer the original question, I guess if a player had some sort of MINOR injury that prevented him from playing but he would be 100% healthy in time, a team could trade for an IR player but why would you when there could be legal issues if the injury is one that could re-occur? It's basically a high risk thing to do which is why we don't see it happen.
