Can someone explain the bye week schedule (1 Viewer)

Week 4, 9 and 10 have 6 teams on bye

Week 11 has 4 teams on bye

Weeks 5-8 and 12 have 2 teams on bye

Anyone have a clue as to how they came up with this?

I have no clue. I also don't understand how some teams in the same division play each other twice within 3 or 4 weeks near the end of the year. Why can't they spread divisional games and bye weeks out better?

Short answer: No.

Longer answer: The NFL schedule is like a jigsaw puzzle wrapped in a Sudoku puzzle inside a Jenga game. The schedule makers have to balance out the required match-ups, then also take into account such factors as MLB games, prime-time schedules, the shared NYC stadium, time zones, etc. And my guess is that, like a Sudoku puzzle, as soon as you change around one item it causes cascading problems throughout the rest of the plan.

Exactly. Utilizing the weeks that generate more viewers. The cluster of division games towards the end of the season makes the end of the season more exciting, therefore, not losing viewers

I always thought all division games should be played the same week. Each team in a division should have the same BYE. AFC vs NFC games should all be played in the same week, and whatever division your division plays against, those games should be played in the same week. It would be pretty easy to promote and develop rivalries as well. Imagine an all AFC vs NFC weekend one week, and the next your division all play another division. Lots of bragging rights. Doesn't seem like it would be that hard to schedule either.

Oh you wanna pick that hot TE up off the WW? Well you can but he has the same bye as you other TE so you are still going to need another one for week ten.

Have two of your starting WRs with a week 4 bye, don't worry every WR worth picking up also has a week 4 bye so it won't help you.

Tom Brady sucking and you didn't draft a capable back up? Don't worry every other available QB who is worth looking into also has a week 10 bye.

(Yes I have already run into all of this along with having AP and Ray Rice as my "stud" RB's on the same team....I guess this is someone's idea of fun.)

It was really cruel of the NFL to assign those players to you. Maybe you should get your league to try letting you draft the players on your team next year so you can avoid such problems.

Yes. The article linked earlier was interesting. I'd love to see you come up with a full 2014 schedule that's better. When you realize these guys have to factor in so many non-football concerns, it's impressive they don't need two bye weeks.

It wasn't this way not too long ago. And it sucked. The new way is much better.

In the old system, divisional games were spread throughout the schedule. As a result, you could lock up the playoffs and a bye week in week 14 or 15. Meaning week 16 and 17 sucked, players sat, no one tried to win, etc. Peyton Manning didn't play the last two games of the year for most of the first half of his career. And then most of the time the Colts were rusty after 3-4 weeks off.

Now the late divisional games mean all the games matter. Can't rest up, can't take games off. It's a vast improvement.

I don't mean having no division games at the end, I mean playing the same team twice. For example Dallas and Philly play each other weeks 13 and 15. So let's say Romo has a 2-3 week injury and he now misses both games against the same opponent. They play the Redskins weeks 8 and 17 so why not switch some of these around?
