Can you name a rock band (1 Viewer)

I can guarantee that my parents haven't heard of any of the bands named so far.

This doesn't mean that rock is dead. It's just evidence of how segmented music has become. The only musical artists that have become known by everyone in the last 10 years have been famous for other reasons than just their music.
 My parents probably didn't know 90% of the bands I listened to in HS (mid 1980s). Pretty sure my mom doesn't know 99% of the bands I listen to now.
There is no newish rock band today that most people in their 60s today have heard of. That was different in the mid 80s. Virtually everyone had heard of The Police, for example.

No idea what this means.

But I stand by my original statement. And the Police were pretty mainstream.

Part of that simply has to do with how we listen to radio and watch TV now. There's many new bands I don't know by name because I don't listen to the radio stations they'd be played on. Back in the 80s you didn't have as many options so if you were in your car and listened to the radio, there's a better chance the Police would be on that station.

But if you haven't heard of a band whose album is certified Platinum in twelve countries, sold over 2 million copies in the U.S. alone, won an American Music Award for Favorite Alternative Artist, a Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance, five Billboard Music Awards, and a World Music Award; that's your ignorance.

Exactly. I was originally commenting on the "everyone knows" part of Gene's question. There really aren't mainstream rock bands these days. There once were and virtually everyone had heard of them. (Not that that means today's rock is dead or bad.)

It used to be "Don't trust anyone over 30"

Now it's "all the new stuff sucks"

GET OFF MY LAWN!

Imagine Dragons
These guys are massive and they're a rock band. Question answered in the first reply.

Lots of good bands mentioned since that aren't as universally known... Although everybody knows Arcade Fire, right?
