Can you think of another NFL *superstar* (1 Viewer)

Raider Nation

Devil's Advocate
You get star players who change teams then change their jersey number.

Randy Moss wearing #84 in Minnesota, then switching to #18 in Oakland.

Joe Montana wearing #16 in San Francisco, then switching to #19 in K.C.

Then you have good players who switch jersey numbers. Guys like Plaxico Burress, who went from Pittsburgh (#80) to the Giants (#17)... and you have a million scrubs who change numbers, most often because a star player buys it from them.

But I can only think of one superstar who changed numbers while playing for the same team: Torry Holt. He wore #88 early in his career, then switched to #81 when Az Hakim left Saint Louis, and the number became available.

I suppose you can count Daunte Culpepper, who wore #12 his rookie year and then switched to #11 the year after. But he never really played as a rookie.

Any others?

He did it in memory of fellow Miami defensive lineman Jerome Brown.

Still loved here in Philly. Imagine, both Jerome and Reggie are now gone well before their time. :(

Last year

Koren Robinson was 18....he will now be 81

Troy Williamson was 19....he will now be 82

Fred Smoot was 27..........he will now be 21

3 studs changing numbers in one year for the same team.

Randy Moss wore 88 before switching to 84. Im not sure when that switch took place, because Im certain Moss was 84 during his rookie year. But he started out with 88

 they, and the vikings will show you this year
We'll see, but they sure as hell ain't studs yet. I'd put my money on them not being studs this year as well.

Actually Moss was 18 in training camp, 88 is retired........

I believe LJ wore #34 his rookie year before switching to #27.
He wasn't an established superstar at the time of the number change, which is what I was shooting for. That's why I didn't really count Culpepper.

MN RB Robert Smith, who had some pretty good years, switched from #20 to #26 IIRC. He also switched from R. Smith to Robert Smith on the back of his jersey.

Thought of another one:

Legendary Cleveland Browns QB Otto Graham started his career wearing #60, then switched to #14. I'm certain that came well before the NFL mandated that certain positions must wear numbers in specific ranges, so I'd be curious to learn why he switched.

I don't recall this example, nor the O.J. Simpson one which was mentioned earlier.Google image searches return nothing. I'd like to get confirmation on these two.

The only thing KCrap will show you is why he was booted out of Seattle. You already got a taste of it in the last game where he stone handed an easy pass right into the D's loving arms. He may be a good return man but you'll be crying in your Koren-Os if you're counting on him to not strike out.

 Sounds like sour grapes to me. Robinson was a tool in Seattle, mainly because he had demons. Bad timing... sucks for you. I am convinced he has cleaned up his life, and I am also convinced that he is going to be a stud at WR, just as everyone predicted when he came out of NC State.

When? I never saw that and I watch every Vikings game?

Michael Jackson changed his name without changing teams. :D
Haha yeah, first he changed his number from 1 to 81 (league may have made him do this), then he changed his name to Michael Dyson then back to Michael Jackson again.

I'll just rely on the burden of proof, which is overwhelmingly in favor of him being a flop. I heard all the excuses and predictions of a turnaround year after year in Seattle. This year it will be different they said every year. And it wasn't. Don't worry, you'll see. And next off season you'll be claiming THIS is the year he'll turn it around. He's poisoned.

Great link. Ray Nitschke wore 33? Reggie White wore 91? :loco:

Jim Otto (Raiders center in the '60s) started one season with #50 and then switched to #00 in honor of his name.

Also, Michael Jordan has worn #45 and #12.

i read in a recent article about ricky williams going to the toronto argos that he wanted to switch his number to #27 before last season with the dolphins (the same # he is wearing with the argos) but the NFL would not give him permission to do so. he stated that the league didn't want 'star' players switching numbers while with the same team due to the $ involved (preprinted jerseys, etc)
