CAR - Steve Smith fights Ken Lucas (1 Viewer)

There are some silly postings on this thread. Did all of you bashing Smith ever play football? Fights happen a lot in practice.
really. How many fights happened in the film room when everyone was just sitting there? How many of those fights resulted in one of the guys being beaten so badly they could never play again?
I agree with both of these comments actually. Playing football in high school and college, fights would happen. However, and it's a big however, the fights that took place were - aside from one I remember - with helmets and pads on, minimizing damage. There was a lot of grabbing facemasks, pushing, etc. The lone fight on the sideline resulted in both players being severeky sanctioned and missing games during the season. I know the situations are completely different. I am just saying that fights in football happen, the nature of the game is a major reason for that. The fights that are on the sidelines or in the film rooms where guys are defenseless, is just not right.

I know nothing like this will likely happen, but isn't this a clear case of assault and battery?

I mean this isn't even the playing field against the opposition.

This is the equivalent to guys exchanging words in the office and one guy escalating to physical violence all the while being on

camera. I'm not sure why the pads excuse the behavior.

I know it's not going to happen, but do the cops even need Lucas' request to press charges? Seems like they could proceed whether Lucas wanted them to or not given the apparent amount of evidence.

You know, I could have sworn someone else posted a thread about a possible suspension, but can't for the life of me seem to remember who? :hifive:

"Steve was probably a little remorseful for what happened had heard rumors that he'd survived," Muhammad said. "He was trying to apologize returning to finish him off, so I was walking with him just to be there so I could say I witnessed the kill."
Fixed.

wait...for someone who's just coming up to speed on this. he's going to get suspended for giving a teammate a black eye in a scuffle during practice? seriously?

I'll try to add what I know as a local here in Charlotte...This was big news on sports radio all day. Word has it that these two players have never liked each other. It sounds like Lucas and Smith were jawing as they came off the field from 1-on-1's. Lucas dropped to a knee while Smith yelled at him. Lucas pushed Smith, who then popped Lucas in the eye and proceeded the beat the crap out of him. LB Jon Beason pulled Smith off of Lucas (rumor has it that Beason suffored a minor injury) while other players and coaches jumped in. Most interviewed said that Smith deserves at least a 1 game suspension. This has become an offense versus defense battle, with Moose saying that if Smith is suspended, Lucas should be suspended. I'd be surprised if anything happens, but really, who thinks the Panthers will win game 1 against San Diego anyway? From what I hear, this is no surprise to Panther insiders as Smith has never been able to control his temper. Publicly, the word is that he has matured and become a family man and community advocate, but I hear he is still not very popular among teammates because of his attitude and actions off the field.

I agree with this statement.Any team filled with competitors will fight amongst themselves in practice from time to time.Question to the people throwing out arbitrary suspensions, just exactly who are you claiming will levee the suspension?Carolina or the league?Where is your basis coming from for a one game vs. a four?To me, this is an internal matter. Draft Smith with confidence.

Smith is an idiot.

Regardless of who started it, he's short sighted enough to risk breaking his hand(s) throwing punches.

And for those wondering, the last teammate Smith beat up did press charges.

Panthers' wide receiver charged in film-room fight

By Tim Whitmire, The Associated Press

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Carolina wide receiver Steve Smith was jailed Friday and faces a misdemeanor assault charge from a film-room fight that sent a teammate to the hospital.

Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith.

Anthony Bright, a practice squad player, suffered a broken nose and was hospitalized for two nights in the fight that broke out during a film session Monday. He filed an incident report with Charlotte-Mecklenburg police following his release from the hospital.

The Panthers have already suspended Smith for Sunday's home game against Atlanta.

"We knew this was a possibility," Panthers general manager Marty Hurney said of Smith's jailing.

Smith was charged with assault inflicting serious injury, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Capt. Cam Selvey said. As a misdemeanor, the charge carries a maximum sentence of 120 days imprisonment.

Smith turned himself in to sheriff's deputies around 5 p.m. and was being processed at the county's central jail, Selvey said. He was released Friday night after posting $2,000 bond.

It has been a turbulent week for the Panthers (3-7), who released offensive tackle Chris Terry on Wednesday, after he was arrested for failing to appear in court on a misdemeanor charge of assaulting his wife.

Smith, an All-Pro kick returner as a rookie last season, has apologized for the attack on Bright and has agreed to receive counseling for his temper.

Hurney said Smith's arrest would not change the team's punishment, which has been criticized by some as too light.

"We made our decision (about the suspension) after gathering the facts. We've given our reasons for that decision," Hurney said.

The franchise has been plagued by off-the-field problems in recent years. Most notably, former receiver Rae Carruth is in jail for hiring hit-men to kill his pregnant girlfriend and the wife of former running back Fred Lane is charged in his death.

On Thursday, Hurney vehemently defended the organization against claims it doesn't properly address its problems and punishes its players too lightly.

"There's a lot of issues around the league that don't get out, we are very open with them and we address them and we don't dismiss them," Hurney said. "I believe you ask any team in the league, they'll tell you we address it."

Yeah I played football and I saw a few fights in practice in the 8 or so years I played. They were always started by some meat puppet with an IQ of 3 that thought he was more important than the team and couldn't spell discipline let alone understand what it meant. These same morons usually had a lot of physical talent, but never seemed to mind destroying a close game by having a mental breakdown that costs the entire team. 2 of the 3 guys eventually got thrown off the team and even though they had a ton of talent, we played better without them. The third guy basically got his life threatened by 6 of the other guys on the team including me (this was after practice!) he straightened his act up after that, but still jumped offside too much for a guy that lined up directly over the center. I enjoy watching Smith on the football field and will still probably draft him since he may be undervalued, but if you think my above statements bash him than you probably were one of those meat puppets. The rest of the guys who played understood how a guy like that can ruin a team.

As far as who should suspend him, any decent coach in his right mind! He got suspended for 1 game the last time if I'm not mistaken, so it should be at least 2 games this time. Or the same coach can lose control of his team and simply make a statement that he promises to punish him when he does it a third time. Goodell should suspend Smith and the coach for a couple of games if the coach does nothing. Smith for being an idiot an the coach for being a pansie.

Defend him if you want because your a homer or you have him on your fantasy team, but a cancer is still a cancer no matter how good he plays football.

The Panthers will levee the suspension it will come down pretty soon. I expect a one or two game suspension. Smith is known to have a temper, is known to trash talk during games, has in the past fought a teammate, and broken his nose which required that player to stay in a hospital and settle an assault charge. The last time this happened with Smith he received a one game suspension, so that is where the 1+ game suspensions are coming from.

Here's some pieces of info:

The coach had an extended talk with the team after the workout. Delhomme said Fox warned the players not to retaliate against Smith.
:goodposting: Is that really necessary?
It is when you have some angry Panthers pissed at Steve Smith for sucker punching a teammate and hoping het gets a taste of his own medicine. You know, Steve Smith might happen to take a little slip and fall in the shower one of the coming days.
Smith is the team's star and best player. On top of that he has a tough reputation. I bet the line to fight him is pretty short.

You can't sweep this under the rug and pretend it was a mere scuffle during practice. They weren't practicing--they were on the sideline with their helmets off. This was no different than Smith's assault on Anthony Bright in the film room.

Yes, grown men. One shoved the other (according to the account) and got punched for it. So far I think the talk of suspension is just talk and some wishful thinking thrown in.

Somehow I don't think there are too many 240lb linebackers who are afraid of Steve Smith.

Why? I had a game where another guy bit me twice in a pile-up after I tackled him. If i was Steve Smith, I would have punched him in the middle of the game, and screwed up a close game, but instead I solved the problem in my own way. The first time he bit me, I showed the official the bite mark on my arm and let him know the other guy's number. Since the official shrugged me off, my thumb accidentally found the other guy's eye in the next play we met, but it wasn't anything that was gonna be seen by an official. He was out for about a quarter, but when he came back in, he bit me a second time. I looked down at the second set of bite marks on my arm and they didn't look too bad, so for the next three plays, I bit 2 of my fingers as hard as I could in the huddle. The next play that I tackled the guy, I made sure that I was on top of him and my hand was hidden under his face mask. I just started screaming bloody murder and when the officials ran over I made sure to tell the same guy that was the 3rd time he bit me. I showed him 3 sets of bite marks and he got thrown out of the game. He was a very good RB and getting him thrown out of the game probably ruined the other team's chances. The other choice was getting myself thrown out of the game and letting my back-up try to handle him while I massaged my ego on the bench. It's all about self control. There have been a couple of times that I've gotten in a shoving match in practice, but I've never even thought about punching a team-mate in practice. Like you said they are grown men. We acted better as kids.

watching sportscenter this morning and while vague, the sportscaster said "Smith could be suspended for up to 4 games for violating the collective bargaining agreement for conduct detrimental to the team."

ESPN also reporting Smith has been sent home from camp

Of course only sent home for the day. ESPN seemed to imply he would be missing a chunk a camp.

I bet it is if you're required to start off on your knees.

General manager Marty Hurney and coach John Fox said the matter was being handled internally. An announcement is expected from the team once a decision is made.Smith apparently won't face disciplinary action by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, even though he might have violated the league's personal conduct policy.Among actions punishable under the policy are “violent or threatening behavior among employees, whether inside or outside the workplace” and “conduct that imposes inherent danger to the safety and well-being of another person.”However, league spokesman Greg Aiello said altercations that occur in practice are routinely handled by the clubs, not by the league.

I think people are in serious denial if don't see a suspension coming for Smith. He is a multiple offender in this type of situation and he was suspended for a game the last time such an event happened. Fox will more than likely loose all credibility with his team if Smith doesn't miss at least 1 game. Given this isn't the 1st time he's done something like this, I would expect more than that.

Damn, I'd forgotten all about that. I can't believe that that was six years ago.

Didn't S Smith get in trouble for some domestic violence several years ago? I might be wrong on that. As far as the boys will be boys attitude, if this was an isolated thing I might see taking that stance but it is very clear that SS actions hurt the team. Say what you will but crap like this usually affects team chemistry/unity eventually and I would be tired of this song and dance if I were a teamate of SS.

To me,it all comes down to whether Lucas assaulted Smith first. A shove is an assault. Two people have posted here that apparently were there. One said they were trading insults and Steve sucker punched Lucas. That would warrant a suspension. The other said Lucas shoved Steve first. That is an assault and legally warrants defending oneself. If he shoved him on the sideline then Lucas is at fault, even though I agree the "defense" went over the top.

Smith could argue it was self defense, but both would likely be charged with assault. Considering the situation, I don't think many judges would bite off on the "self defense" approch on this one.I only comment because your statement comes off very black and white letter of the law, when in fact it isn't the case.

So where is the fantasy value in this?

He is suspended for 2 games. I wouldn't necessarily bump up the other CAR WRs in my draft rankings, since that isn't enough added opportunity.

So it seems the value is with Smith himself. His ADP will probably fall. Per FBG, his ADP as of yesterday was WR8 and 25th overall. I could see it falling at least to WR15, and the high 30s overall.

The suspension is the first 2 games, so it doesn't affect the stretch run and playoffs. And then, given his personality, he may be hell bent to prove himself and make up for that missed time when he comes off the suspension.

Thoughts?

I don't think it drops that much. Who is WR15 now? Roy Williams? I'd rather have 14 games of smith than 16 of Roy. (if roy plays a full season)I had him as 9th on my board...Probably drop him to 12-13 area. Bumps for Chad, Welker, Housh (yikes maybe even Marshall)

As of yesterday, consensus ADP had these players within 15 picks or so after Smith:Marques ColstonChad JohnsonTorry HoltPlaxico BurressWes WelkerAnquan BoldinBrandon MarshallI don't see Marshall moving ahead of Smith, if he gets his own suspension. But I could see all the other taken earlier, implying Smith's overall ADP would fall to the high 30s.

I think I'd rather have 14 games of Smith(and possibly 12 games of Marshall) over a season of Welker(in non-ppr) or Boldin(no lock to play more than 12 himself.)

I had Holt and Colston both ahead of Smith already. I'd def bump Chad, Housh (prob rated FBG #7) and Welker. Call me skeptical, but I'm not sold on Burress being top 12 worthy. He is a 70 catch guy and I don't expect such a high TD total again.Like Boldin's talent, but his situation is currently enough for me to leave him be. Untill Marshall is actually suspended, I will bump him ahead of Smith. In a savvy league, Smith shouldn't fall more than 5-10 spots at most IMO. So yeah, early to mid 30's sound about right.

ProFootballTalk is reporting that the fight started because players were making fun of Lucas for having had a nose job.

So Smith broke his nose.

Well, that's kind of funny.
