Car warranty scam robocalls (1 Viewer)

Yeah the frequency has ramped up.   Also all of the ones I get that leave voice mail only leave like 20 seconds from the middle of a recorded message.
2 so far for me today. I love the numbers coming from random places in FL. I know they’re not actually calling from those locations, but it’s funny to see them pop up.

Seems like it's gotten alot better in last month or two.  Most of the spam calls are getting flagged and blocked.

Didn't they write a song about this???

"In the year 2021, when a car can't survive, when warranties expire, they will fall..."

Truecaller app (free version) works pretty good. I heard some scammers will just try to get you to say the word "yes" and then use that as confirmation you agreed to sign up for whatever they are scamming.  On the land line I use to tell them to hold for a minute...click the phone and say something like " officer (or operator) this is the type of calls I told you about" and then ask the caller "what are you calling about?". They would hang up every time.

I block the calls as they come. I also choose to answer unknown numbers. My question is, are these spoofed numbers actually real numbers that eventually I will block all the real numbers in the world? I got one from North Korea once.

Sometimes they spoof your own exchange. Like 123-456-(xxxx) where they just re order your number to make it look real.

I've accidentally blocked a real person this way that later called me for real.

Yes, they spoof a new number every time they call, blocking is pointless as it is not the actual number they are calling from.

Love messing with these people.  Last one ask me the mileage.  I told them I didn't know, maybe 40k on my 2008.  Eventually told them to hold and I would run down the block and check.  They held for several minutes....I guess I was mistaken, it's 400k...click.

The medical insurance polices are the best.  When they ask about pre-existing conditions I've told them my penis is ozzing a brown #### or that I have anal leakage.  One lady I told I had chlamydia and she ask what that was.  I told her I put my pee pee in a nasty vjay and got the itchy scratchys.

Recently everyone wants me to refinance or buy my home.  Funny how long they try even after you tell them you have a 30 yr at 2.5%.  But do you need cash?  Nah....I don't know what to do with all the cash I have.

WTF people...couldn't find a job telling expected mothers they had a miscarriage so you decided on this career field instead?

A lot of these scams confuse me.  I don't know if they are trying to scam you as much as phish you for enough information to try to do a identity theft honestly.

My cell phone number is still from a place I lived 15+ years ago. I used to think I should update it to a local number, now I never will. If a call is from my old area code or one nearby it's almost certainly spam.  If it's from a local area code where I live now it's almost certainly legit.

I get these a lot.

Also... I thought iPhones were supposed to completely silence "Potential Spam" calls.  Mine still alerts me and I have to hit the "do not answer" button.

I already don’t answer unknown numbers, especially if they share an area code with my cell number(I live in Florida and my cell has an Indiana area code, so any from the same area code is an immediate red flag), but my IPhone is kind enough to label several as “Scam Likely,” and even block the call automatically.
This. I have a different area code than the people around here because I got my phone when I lived in another state. It’s awesome. I know that if an unknown number is from this area, it’s probably legit.

Didn't see an overarching "robocall" thread, so posting here.  I ended up turning off the ringer for all unknown calls.  It's just gotten so bad.

Take today for example:  robocalls (assuming they are, unless someone not in my contacts called and didn't leave a message) have occurred at:

9:19am, 10:20am, 12pm (x2), 1:05, 1:18, 2pm, 2:04, 2:34 and 2:36.  That's 10 calls since 9am.

Friggin' ridiculous.

Old rumor, don't know if it still works, but, if you put the DTMF tone for "number out of service" (three notes that go do-doo-DOO when you call a bad number) at the beginning of your voicemail message, computers that hear the message will delete your number from their databases. Humans that call will immediately hear your voice after and leave a message. I'd also heard once that you only need to put the first note on the message, that's enough for a computer to delete you, and makes it sound more normal for real human callers.

Now, if only I could opt out of my idiot congressman's begging phone calls all the time. Of course those morons wrote the law to exempt themselves.

I don't get these calls, and I chalk it up to refusing to give my cell number to just about anybody.  My family, my kids school, my work, and my friends get my number.  NOBODY else gets my number.  Not the shoe store for the 20% discount, not Facebook, not the grocery store...nobody.  Most of the time when someone asks for my number, I say I don't have a phone.  They give me a weird look, but I don't get a second attempt at getting my number.

ETA - I am probably forgetting some people I give my number to.  The doctors office, for example.  I am just extremely prudent on who I give it out to.

Hold on...let me get him on the line for you.....

(goes back about his business)

...........click...

Yeah well what I've heard is that once you answer it proves to these aholes that your number is in fact a valid number so they add you to other lists.

Anyways... my number, previous to me, apparently belongs to a dude named Ben Pena, who was in default on a ton of bills.  Thanks alot, Ben.
