Cardinals shopping Leinart to SEA/Carroll (1 Viewer)

Former USC QB Leinart out as starter

August 26th, 2010, 12:56 pm · 53 Comments · posted by MARCIA C. SMITH/THE REGISTER

It looks like Arizona coach Ken Whisenhunt is giving up on former USC Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Matt Leinart again, before the regular season opener and for the second time in three seasons.

Whisenhunt announced that Derek Anderson will start in Saturday’s preseason game against against the Bears. The plan is for Leinart to come off the bench late in the second quarter and play into the second half.

Seems like Leinart (Mater Dei), a 2006 first-round NFL draft pick, didn’t get much of chance this time after supposedly having a promising training camp. Whisenhunt pulled Leinart in the last preseason game after having played only the opening nine snaps.

Hmmmm. A source told a Pro Football Talk/NBC Sports blogger that a trade might be in the works to send Leinart to Seattle for a reunion with his former USC coach Pete Carroll.

Since 2006, Leinart has played in 29 games and struggled with a career QB rating of 70.8. He has completed 340 of 595 passes (57.1) for 3,893 yards and 14 TDs but has had 20 INTs and has been sacked 29 times for 219 lost yards.

Matt Leinart benched for Saturday; could be done in Arizona

For the second time in three years, it looks like Ken Whisenhunt is giving up on Matt Leinart as a starting quarterback before the season even starts.

Whisenhunt announced that Derek Anderson will start Arizona's preseason game this week against the Bears. The plan is for Leinart to come off the bench late in the second quarter and play into the second half.

Whisenhunt stressed the change wasn't necessarily permanent, but it doesn't take a genius to see this is now Anderson's job to lose. The third preseason game is every team's chance for a final "dress rehearsal" for the season.

As ESPN's Mike Sando writes, "Whisenhunt would not demote his starting QB in third week of preseason if he thought that QB had earned the respect of the locker room." It will be tough for Leinart to recover from this.

Leinart played only nine snaps last week, and now he's not even starting. The only question left is where Leinart will remain with the team. (It looks like NFL.com's Mike Lombardi had great information here.) Whisenhunt is essentially giving up on Leinart, no matter how this move is spun in the short term.

It's at this point we have to mention a tip sent us earlier today, warning us that Leinart was already told Anderson was already the starting quarterback. We didn't feel confident passing it along at the time, but the tipster just earned some major points. So now we can't ignore the second part of the email.

The source claimed that Leinart was told the Cardinals were working on a trade to Seattle, where Leinart and Pete Carroll could try to party like it was 2004. That's certainly just a rumor for now, and sounds a little off the wall.

Then again, the idea of Derek Anderson opening the season as Arizona's starter sounded off the wall just a week ago.

Seattle overpaid for Cilpboard Jesus and now they are probably going to over pay for Leinart. I can't wait to see what Carrol does next. :hangover: I have a hard time taking pre-season seriously since the time when Detriot went 4-0 and followed it up by going 0-16 in the regular season.

The writer is basically saying that an unknown, unreliable source sent him an email with a joke at the end about Pete Carroll collecting former USC players. And that's the part being spread around now as "news". It may be true, but at this point the story has zero credibility.
