Carolina at Pittsburgh (Preseason week 4) (1 Viewer)

Other than Miller, none of the main Steelers offense (Big Ben, FWP, Ward) started. The Panthers D shut them down pretty quick on the first series, and sacked Batch.

did willie reed really fair catch the ball at the Pitt 1? It says so on NFL.com

never mind... pre-season for the game cast as well.

Batch chucks an ugly INT in the EZ and Carolina returns it 20 yards or so. Could have been bad WR play...

Is it safe to say Duce will be cut?
If anyone had stepped up as a #3 RB it would be. So far nobody has really done that, so he may make the team as an insurance policy.
Duce will make the team. There is just really no one on the roster that has done anything behind him. He makes the roster as a experienced vet, but I can't imagine he will have much of a role barring injuries.

18 carries for 42 yards. Has the Panther Number one defense departed? Not too good at 2.3 ypc but if it is all against the 1st team Panthers, maybe not too bad.

These local announcers must be watching a different game than I am. They keep saying how much better Duce looks tonight. To me he looks slow and ineffective. :yucky:

Translation of Edmund Nelson speak: "He managed to get out of the backfield."

If Kuhn hadn't fumbled, Duce's ticket was punched for sure. Is the run with the fumble enough?
The difference between Staley & Kuhn has been pretty glaring. I don't see how Duce makes this squad.

Tyrone Carter will not want to talk to Cowher after the game.
If there was any chance for the starting gig, he lost it with the late hit.
Never been that impressed with Tyrone. I think Clark starts this year, Smith next year and many years in the future.
Agreed.Other thoughts on the game:- Omar Jacobs looked really good and got praise from Cowher afterwards. He makes the team.- Mike Logan had a nice game and the Steelers defense, as a whole, looked pretty good. Of course most of the starters didn't play.- Duce still looks slow and isn't running wih much power. Last week I said he was going to make the team because the Steelers needed the depth. Now I am not so sure -- wouldn't surprise me at all if he got cut and the Steelers scan the WW for a veteran RB or just go with Humes and/or Kuhn.- Chris Gardocki has made the team. His punting was not spectacular but he was the holder for Reed and the Steelers aren't going to fool with that at this point.-

Do the Steelers have salary cap issues?

If so, Humes might be cheaper than Staley.

Just a thought.
Humes is cheaper than Staley. Kuhn is cheaper than both. MOF, you can have Humes & Kuhn for less than Staley. However, I'd say Kuhn will go on the practice squad, Humes will make the team, and Staley? Well, there are places like Houston, Miami, etc. that will need his services.

I think Duce still has some gas in the tank, but I don't think he run for a "run first" team like Pittsburgh.

EDIT: Humes & Kuhn are equal at $275,000. Staley is at $1.5 mil.

I was surprised to see that Gerry Dulac thought that Duce Staley secured his spot on the roster with last night's performance. Here is an excerpt from his column this morning:

What's more, on several runs, Staley looked like a back trying to prove he can be a contributor behind Willie Parker, picking holes, turning the corner and slipping tackles.
I really didn't see too much of that from Staley last night.

MOF, The only thing I did see is Humes learned how to score at the goal line. Staley didn't seem able to get the hard yards on 3&1, etc.

Wow, these guys must be seeing something that I'm not. Pompeani and Nelson were saying how good he looked during the game. I thought he looked slow and indecisive. I'd much rather they kept Kuhn and/or Humes.

I agree and I would like to see them keep Kuhn. He can play both RB and FB and seems to have a nice burst. BUT, I think it is inevitable that Staley is with the team this year.
