Carr gone, Moose official

The Panthers have finalized the contract for WR Muhsin Muhammad, and finally made the cut everyone was waiting for the last two weeks.

QB David Carr is no longer a Panther. They cut ties with him after he endured -- not completely of his own making -- one of the worst seasons they've witnessed at the position.

The guy played well until (and even shortly after) getting his back cracked in New Orleans, but the bottom fell out in Tennessee with a seven-sack game, and he never recovered

MOOSE COMES HOME

As expected, the Carolina Panthers have signed receiver Muhsin Muhammad, bringing him back to Charlotte after a three-season detour to Chicago.

Though he missed an NFC title game appearance in 2005 with Carolina, he made it to the Super Bowl with the Bears in 2006.

Terms of the deal are not yet known. We'd previously heard that Muhammad was in line for a deal worth $1.5 million per year.

Meanwhile, the Panthers have dumped quarterback David Carr. He was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2002 draft, and he was cut by the Texans in early 2007.

Will any team south of the Canadian border take a chance on Carr? Time to truly test the mileage of the #1 Overall Pick Label...

Seeing how well the Texans offense played without Carr and how inept the Panthers looked with him, I have to assume that he's one of the biggest busts in recent years.

I was thinking the same thing. I do not know much about Jim Sorgi, but I have been surprised the Colts have not tried to upgrade the backup QB position. Even Green Bay has always had capable backups behind Favre. If I were Indy, I would try to get a guy like Culpepper or Carr on the roster.

Neither of them would do better then Sorgi. He has been there too long and knows the offense too well to try and bring someone in. Besides, neither Carr nor Cpep would want to go to a place with absolutely NO shot of starting.Someone, however, will sign Carr. They keep signing Weinke, Harrington, ken dorsey.... there will always be room for Carr.

Which Rookie QB will the Panthers bring in
I honestly believe it will be Delhomme, Moore and Basanez as their 3 qbs. I doubt they bring in a rookie qb unless its late in the 2nd day.Reports are that Moore was good enough to get a shot at the future and they saeem to like Basanez even though he was on IR last year.Delhomme is their man and will be ready to go this year.

As long as Sorgi is content to sit behind Peyton (and why wouldn't he be, it's not like teams are knocking on his door), there is no reason for Indy to sign another QB - maybe a practice player, but not a guy who thinks he should make a roster. I could see a team with a good OL, stable QB #1, but in need of a backup, signing him though. He might look at a chance to start, but unless that team has a top notch OL, that would be a mistake.

Why wouldnt he be is right. He won a ring, plays about 1/2 a game a year, gets the best seat in the house, gets paid to work out and see the USA.....Manning is 31 years old, they wont need to get anyone for a few more years. Sorgi was born in 1980 so they wont need to replace him unless he retires.

Back to the thread though, I agree with

:yes:Delhomme will be one of the QB's outside of the Top 12 to target this year. He has Steve Smith to go deep, Muhsin to move the chains, and Jeff King to go over the middle. Add in DeAngelo out of the backfield as a reciever and you could see a great year from Jake D - as long as the O-line holds up.Moore came out of Oregon State, just like Derek Anderson, and he's a capable backup.

I knew that 3 years into his sucky cowardly act in Houston (Andre owner). Now, can we possibly get Carr to team with Williamson to form the greatest show on earth....comedy wise.

If that's their lineup expect Delhomme to struggle in Fox's final year before getting the sack.I expect no improvement from Carolina at all on offense.

Is there a concensus on Smith's outlook with Moose there? Smith should get less double teams which should lead to a much better 2008 than what he did in 2007. I doubt Moose will eat into his production at 34 years of age, right?

At least as a Smith owner, that's what I'd like to think.

Which is just sad. I honestly can't remember every seeing a QB handicap their team more than Carr last year in Carolina. He was beyond deplorable. Just awful on every single possible level. It was almost comical how bad he was. Almost.

I forgot to mention that Jarrett is also in the mix. Mushin and Jarrett will split the 2/3 role, and it'll sort itself out in OTAs and TC.You expect no improvement over 2007?

Try watching him for 5 years...

Funny thing is, I remember us winning a game against the Raiders in which he passed for a whopping 32 yards, and another one against Pittsburgh when the offense produced a grand total of 48 yards THE ENTIRE GAME with him at the helm.

God bless him, he's a nice guy and all that, but any team that signs him is wasting their time. I'd rather be stuck with Weinke, Harrington, or Dorsey...

I'm holding my breath that crazy Mike Martz doesn't decide, just to prove he can rehab ANYBODY, that he will bring Carr to SF.

This Carr belongs in the NFL junkyard.

As far as Muhammad goes, it would be a mistake for the team to delay Jarrett's development by having Mushy start over him. I think MM would help the team best as the 3rd WR and help mentor Jarrett. I hope that's how it plays out.

I keep hearing this but the guy isn't that good. In 12 years he has gained 1000+ yards 3 times and has had double digit TDs once.

A guy doesn't need HoF stats to mentor. If that were so, all coaches would be former stars.

But why sign Moose for this when you have Steve Smith? And I believe they already have a WR coach. If that were the plan I would think they would have kept Keyshaun.

From the Panthers website - Q&A with Muhsin Muhammad

Question: How does it feel to come back to Carolina?

Answer: It does feel good to be back in Charlotte and to be able to play for the Panthers again. I am really looking forward to the potential that we have here and getting back on the field with Steve (Smith) and Jake (Delhomme) and getting some things going again.

Question: Did you ever think you would come back to Carolina after leaving three years ago?

Answer: I never knew what the possibilities were going to be at that point. But obviously signing a six-year deal with another team (Chicago) pretty much says that you may not return.

Question: After being released by Chicago, how high on your list were the Panthers?

Answer: The Panthers I would say were definitely first on the list. I had made some comments to my agent about exploring the possibilities of coming back here to Charlotte. I didn't know how feasible that would be. Obviously, there were some things that had to be worked out, but everything wound up coming together.

Question: How do you compare yourself now, physically, to how you were three years ago?

Answer: I don't feel any different. I'll be honest with you. After I left here I had one of my best NFL seasons. Going up to Chicago, it's a little bit tougher catching the ball in the elements, but I had a couple of really good seasons there. I'm excited about playing down here again. I still feel like I've got a lot of football left in me. I've been fortunate enough to be healthy throughout my career. I'm looking forward to seeing what can happen. I think given the opportunities some great things can happen.

Question: What role do you expect to play for the Panthers?

Answer: Coming in, I really expect to just do what the team needs me to do. I'm not sure exactly what that's going to be. Whether that's a number two receiver or a number three receiver, we'll see what happens. Obviously as a number three receiver, I don't think you can expect to come in and catch 100 balls and have 1,000 yards. But if I'm a number three receiver, then they're going to have a real good number three receiver on the field.

Question: Have you spoken to wide receiver Steve Smith?

Answer: I did talk to Steve. He kind of coerced me into coming back, too. He kind of welcomed it with open arms and the whole idea of me coming back to Carolina. I had an opportunity to talk to Jake, too, and he surely welcomed the idea. We're pretty excited about the possibilities and having fun again, being on the field again and playing again with each other. Of course, we've always maintained our friendship outside of football. So when the opportunity presented itself, it definitely was exciting for both of us.

Question: How can you help wide receiver Dwayne Jarrett?

Answer: I don't know much about Dwayne Jarrett. Dwayne Jarrett was drafted after I left the organization. But from what I hear, he has the potential to be a pretty good player. I haven't seen him play. I haven't watched a lot of film but I will have an opportunity to do that. My job as a player is to try to come in here and make those guys reach their full potential and play as good as they can play, because that's only going to make my team better. I'm coming back to try to win a championship for this city. That's my goal. I have come close to winning them but haven't quite done it yet. After playing as long as I have, I think I have a good idea of what the formula is supposed to look like and what it takes to get the job done. That's what I'm coming back to do. Of course, I've got some milestones in my career, too. Ten thousand yards are definitely in reach, and I'd like to cross that 10,000-yard mark as a Carolina Panther, which would be really nice, and eventually work on getting my statue out there in front of the stadium.

Question: Have you followed the Panthers much since you've been gone?

Answer: I have watched the Panthers play. I have maintained friendships with guys on the team, so I have talked to guys and stuff like that. It was a hurtful thing leaving the organization at that time. But contract negotiations don't always go as you'd plan for them to go. I had to make a business decision that was best for my family at that time. But it's water over the dam right now. I'm just happy to be back down here and have an opportunity to play with a quarterback that's established in the League.

Question: Will you wear number 87?

Answer: It's already done. I made that call (to Jeff King) before I made any other call. Jeff is a good kid. I had a conversation with Jeff and we came to an agreement, so I was able to get my jersey back.

Question: Do you want to finish your career in Carolina?

Answer: I really do. I hope to see myself finishing and retiring as a Carolina Panther, playing the rest of my years out here. I signed a two-year contract, and we'll see how long it lasts. You play this game as long as you feel like you have a passion to play and God willing you stay healthy as long as that passion lasts in your body. I've been blessed to have a healthy career. I think my production and my play haven't dwindled enough to say that I can't play the game anymore.

I do not see how this equals less double teams to Smith. Smith is clearly the threat while Moose is an aging hands guy. D's will not need to double Moose consistently and certainly not at the cost of leaving Smith on single coverage.

With Carr at the helm Williamson's drops will plummet. Simply because the ball won't be anywhere near him...

I would have taken Carr over Brian St Pierre as the #3 last year in Pittsburgh. If we are talkin minimal dollars.

I would again this year over BSP - except hopefully Jared Zabransky can win our #3.

:goodposting: Steve Smith is a deep threat, not a possession receiver. Smith CAN move the chains, but the best use of him is running deeper routes (or quick screens). Muhsin is the Rod Smith style guy who can move the sticks.Key as a mentor? Hardly.Muhsin is the best option if Jarrett bombs, as he, Jake and Smith worked together once already. It's a good signing.
