Carroll Interested In Reunion With Leinart

When Pete Carroll does land in Seattle, one of his first moves will be trying to acquire Arizona Cardinals QB Matt Leinart, sources tell Fox’s Ben Maller.

Carroll believes that Leinart can be a productive NFL player, given the opportunity. The problem is that if Kurt Warner(notes) decides to hang up his cleats, as he discussed on Sunday, Leinart might get that chance with the team that has been waiting for him to be ready.

Even if the Cardinals try to move Leinart, they likely wouldn’t trade him to a division rival, sources tell Maller.

Leinart played for Carroll when the Trojans won the AP national championship in 2003, won a BCS title in 2004 and made a title game appearance in 2005.
The decline of the Seahawks may continue...

Leinart= dreadful NFL QB.

He not only isn't accurate and has limited arm strength, he makes bad decisions. He'll get his WRs killed at some point. Other than that, he's a marvelous passer.

I can't wait to read the "Carroll is going after Reggie Bush and Lendale White" stories.

Hey, man. Let's get the band back together!

As a Cardinals fan, I am still hopeful that Leinart develops into a better than average quarterback. :ducksforcover:

Memo to the Cardinals...GO AHEAD AND TRADE HIM TO A DIVISION RIVAL... IT WILL WORK OUT JUST FINE.

Carroll is building USC North. He brings the coaches like we might expect in Norton and Bates. But, taking a risk on Leinart might be a bit much. I guess there are a few ex-Trojan WRs available. Should be fun to watch this play out.

lmao. this is like the ghost of steve spurrier returning to haunt the nfl. can't wait to watch this guy crash and burn.

if carroll struggles to win when hes got superior players across the board how could anyone expect him to succeed in the pros?

What's next? Is Seattle going to lobby to start playing on Saturdays?

Anyone know when Seattle's homecoming week is?

If he does this, it's actually worse than Spurrier who didn't have an NFL coaching background.

Carroll knows things...

LHUCKS - 1

FBG "Sharks" - 0

God I oVVn this place.

For the chance to have Leinart as the starting QB for a division rival... Arizona really should be offering Seattle however many of their draft picks it takes to close that deal.

I'm thinking Leinart and Arizona's 3rd rounder in exchange for Carroll's word that he'll be the starter for at least 2 seasons.

Why would he do that? Doesn't he know Leinart sucks?

He knows divison rivals don't trade and he's probably just making sure the Cards don't cut bait anytime soon perhaps buying a year or two worth of trainwreck that ensues when Leinart takes over for Warner. Pretty slick move imo.

Laugh now. One day Leinart will be a MVP caliber NFL QB.

I honestly believe this. He's been behind Warner for years now. He has the pedigree. He just needed to grow up. I think he will be a stud. Not sure I'm the only one.
Jimmy Johnson on Sunday Pre-game said of AZ: I don't know who they plan to play QB after Warner retires but they better get a QB because Matt Leinart just is not very good. I don't think anyone with real football knowledge outside of Carroll believes Leinart can be an NFL QB anymore.Only reason I can think to do this is to mine Leinart for information on Arizona's offensive scheme.

I respect Johnson's opinion, but he was never a passing game/QB guru.I would be more interested in hearing what Martz or Holmgren have to say.

Spurrier was exactly who I thought of when I read this. Oh Danny Wuerful (sp?).

And Shane Matthews too....If he can't get Leinart, maybe he can at least get John David Booty.

Even if Leinart doesn't light it up, he will assist in rebuilding the team. He knows Carroll, he has a good idea of the system (and it may actually be the same system) and the Cardinals are going nowhere fast if they have to use Leinart next year. Having a quarterback that knows the system can really speed up everyone elses learning as there is somebody on the field that knows the offense.

I don't see this happening just because Leinart has intimate knowledge of the Cardinal offense and they don't have anybody else to lead the offense after Warner.

What would the Cards take for Leinart?

It is nice to have a good laugh over this article, but it is based on unnamed sources (could be from people in the know or could also be from someone who has an axe to grind with Carroll). It is interesting to read but I am not taking it too seriously.

Not in this universe. The guy is awful. He's JaMarcus Russell level bad.
Hey now, lets keep this reasonable. Russell has a level just to himself - and only time will tell if he'll reach Ryan Leaf-like prowess. Leinart has a decent running game, plays in a weak division, and throws to Fitz. I think its a safe bet he'll be at least average if not, well, you know, slightly better than... But MVP caliber? That's a little out there.

I still have no clue how good Leinart is. He's been back up to an All-Pro QB for several seasons. He seems like a d-bag, and he might flop as a starter. But not beating out Kurt Warner for a starting gig isn't exactly an indictment of his ability.

Correct.Throw in the fact that he's had flashes of brilliance...he's worth a flier if you're a guy like Carrol.

I don't remember the flashes of brilliances (I recall some flashes of not terrible back when he started quite a few games in 2006...but never brilliance. JMO) but I do completely agree with the above that he is worth a flier and that it is far from an indictment of his ability to not beat out Warner.

did johnson say both sentences of this or just the first one?

Go watch the game at St. Louis from this year. With Warner, the Cardinals were cruising and on their way to dismantling the Rams. However, Warner gets a concussion, has to leave the game, Leinart comes in, and suddenly the Cardinals offense comes to a screeching halt, as they scored zero points the rest of the game (a little over half of the game), holding on to win thanks to the defense. In other words, Leinart sucks.
