Think of these names: Beanie Wells, Ryan Mathews, Andre Johnson, Darren Mcfadden (Demarco Murray to an extent even though I think he is fine)

Different Positions, age, stage of life, etc, etc. With the only constant being the murmurs of them being oft injured or "injury prone." Now before anyone gets to upset I know statistically speaking Wells actually only missed two games as did Mathews last season so its not like they are glass; the main purpose of this topic is for me at least to get a better understanding of why certain players seem to be more injury susceptible? Andre Johnson is a physical freak/test tube specimen but seems to always be hurt. Randy Moss is one of the lankiest guys I have seen at the position and he hasn't had half the missed time Andre Johnson has racked up. Does anyone know why some players sport the "injury prone" or "injury bug" label. The only things that can come to my mind are, preparation, taking care or lack of care of the body, aggressive playing style, state of mind, or I guess just bad luck. Please Enlighten me.

If anyone had the answer to this they would make millions advising teams.

It's a fools game trying to predict injuries.

some players are more likely to get hurt than others just based on the simple fact that all bodies are not build exactly the same.
It is pretty hard to tell the difference between injury prone and unlucky.
yes, thats difficult. i think if a player has a series of injuries, that makes it more likely that it is due to a fragile body as opposed to luck. it is always debatable though.

Variance is the answer for which you're looking.
:goodposting: Read this. It will clear some stuff up.
:goodposting: The Daniel Kahneman book cited in this article actually has a lot of concepts that are applicable to FF such as the endowment effect and the anchoring effect. (Sorry I'm on iPad or would wiki link them.)

I'd suggest a good exercise for anyone who believes in the concept of injury prone players is to make a list of the 10 or 12 players or whatever number it is that they view as injury prone and then compare at the end of the season how many games they missed vs everyone else in he nfl.

I think we all know what the results would be. Some would play 16 games , some would miss a few and some would have season ending injuries. Just like the rest of the nfl.

Ironically, "Fragile" Fred Taylor always seemed to be hurt and missing games - until he wasn't. In fact, after receiving the nickname, he went on to start 16 games in a row in 2002 & 16 more in 2003. Them missed 2 games in 2004 and 5 in '05 - then the nickname resurfaced. Then he went on to start 15, 15 & 13 the next 3 seasons.

Injury proneness is a perception, not generally a reality - except for players like Danario Alexander - but one could argue he has never actually been healthy. I would label someone like that with a "chronic injury".

What about someone like Westbrook whose injuries date back to college?
