CB Antoine Winfield, Vikings agree to 5-year extension (1 Viewer)

what deals did samuel and assasmokah sign?

I don't know the details of this contract, but he might not ever see the last year or two, and you want the guy on board for this big superbowl push.

if you've got the cap, I say use it --- he's still producing.

After a bit of hemming and hawing, Antoine Winfield has at last gotten a contract extension from the Vikings. The new deal will reportedly pay the Pro Bowl cornerback $36 million over five years, with $16.1 million in guaranteed money. The big hang-up from the Vikings’ side was Antoine’s age - he’s 31, and would be 36 if he played till the end of the deal - but they covered themselves on that end by building a bunch of incentives into the contract.

He's a good CB and can stop the run but I did figure with a deal like this incentives could be a big part but 16 million in guarantees is a bit steep. It's also his birthday today I believe. (32) I do agree the Vikes need him and cant be a bad thing to make him happy.

Blog post on Winfield's contract

The compromise they came to in announcing Winfield’s five-year, $36 million ($16.1 million guaranteed) deal on Thursday is an interesting one and could be termed a de-esclator and potentially esclator clause. The verbiage states that if Winfield loses his starting job in 2011 and moves to the nickel role, the following season his salary of $7 million will be cut in half, meaning he will be paid as a top nickel corner rather than a top starting corner. But if Winfield eventually gets the starting job back his salary will jump back up to its previous terms.

What this means is that if Winfield loses his job, the Vikings won’t be tempted to cut him because he’s making way too much money. And Winfield won’t be looking for a raise in either situation because he would be well compenstated for the position he plays. Of course, if Winfield keep the starting spot his salary won’t change.
The way I understand it is if Winfield loses his starting position and is moved to Nickleback, he will get paid less, but will still be paid pretty well for a nickle back.It looks like he will definitely retire a Viking and the contract looks like a win win for both sides.

I'm sorry, but that sounds like a :lmao: in the making. As if he'd be thrilled about losing his starting job even if his salary wasn't part of the equation.Plus, size be damned, I always thought Winfield might at least deserve a look at safety once he is no longer a starting caliber CB. How would that be handled?
