Cedric Houston just up and left? (1 Viewer)

From Newsday:

"And Mangini said that RB Cedric Houston will likely not return to the team, or to football. He said he was moving on with his life after two NFL seasons in which he showed occasional glimpses of adequacy for the Jets but always struggled with badly-timed injuries and never found his niche. He probably wouldn’t have been much of a factor on this team this year with Thomas Jones and Leon Washington taking the bulk of the snaps, but he seemed like a good guy. Good luck, Cedric."

He had a Thyroid condition coming out of college and I really thought he could be a good NFL Rb once that was discovered and cleared up.....

Hmmmmm..... Weird.

It's not like he was raking in the big bucks. Maybe he figured it's not worth the damage to his health.

Minimum is almost 400k, no? How is that not big bucks to a guy under 25? Or to anybody, really?
I think the rookie minimum is around the mid $200's. At any rate I don't consider $400k for a few seasons big money, especially in New York. Plus I think you need 4 years to accrue pension benefits so to walk away before that makes no sense. I'm not going to call him dumb because I think something else is going on because to walk away defies logic.

I have met Cedric a few times... now I'm not saying I'm his bud or anything, but he left me with a strong impression that he was a smart, well spoken educated young man, and not likely to make an emotional or spur of the moment decision. I'm shocked.... he was as hard working well motivated player as I've ever met. In fact, I took such a personal liking to him as to make me less than objective when talking about him as a player. Underdog who overcame some wieghted odds to play in the NFL... and he walks away. I had lunch with him once.... and I sure would like to talk to him now. Very hard to figure this one. I'm sure there is much more to this story than what has so far been reported.... take care Ced.... as though you would ever read this....

okay, i found this in today's entry of the blog posted early in this thread; maybe washington's absence is no big deal.

"He said Leon Washington will miss practice today for personal reasons and added that the RB missed last night’s practice for the same reason. Not sure if that has anything to do with his puking during the first practice yesterday, but it could explain why Chad Pennington was so comforting to Washington after he spilled his breakfast."

He is moving on to his other, extremely high paying job.
He is leaving the NFL to do what he does second best??Can that pay $500K a year?It makes me sad when I hear stories like this. Somebody should smack these guys and tell them to milk the NFL for as long as they can. Even if you have a long career you are going to be done right around age 30. You can then go and pursue other interests....after you have a few mil in the bank everything is better!

Has there ever been any more news on Cedric Houston? I liked the kid for all that he had to overcome to be a decent NFL player and then he up and left. I was just curious if anyone ever heard any more details on why.

He's had health issues ever since his days in Tennessee. I believe some of those were of the psychological variety as well which caused him to fall to the third round. Good luck to him in his new life.

From his Wiki page:Houston has returned to the University of Tennessee as a student and is finishing his degree.

 Seriously??I would also love to have the glory of being an NFL player......without the car-wreck-like 20-30mph collisions dozens of times every Sunday and chronic lifetime pains which are sure to follow you through life.
