Chad Greenway (1 Viewer)

Just read this and wondering if there is any truth to it, and if so, how much does it impact Greenway's production?

(Rotoworld) The Vikings are considering replacing WLB Chad Greenway with SLB Ben Leber on nickel downs.

Impact: Greenway has been solid in his first full season after missing his rookie year with a torn ACL, but leaving the field in passing situations would limit his big-play potential. Leber is hardly an IDP option playing on the strong side.

Yep ... its true. Definately not something you want as a Greenway owner. It will, without a doubt effect his production. Simply less opps.

It hurts his short term value a lot, but for dynasty owners, I think he is a great buy low once word gets out about him losing snaps. I am one who does not think he is 100% recovered from his torn ACL, plus he lacks experience, as this is his first season playing.

I was listening to KFAN out of Mpls at lunch and they were talking a bit about Greenway. Their impression was that Greenway looks very good defending against the run but has been pretty weak in pass situations. That was their observations. Whether it is true or not or whether that is something Greenway will improve upon I guess remains to be seen.

I have to agree with AB. I think Greenway will be fine in the long run. He may be thinking too much, instead of trusting his instincts and reacting, as is the case alot of times with inexperienced players. If he is platooned or replaced in the nickel, I beleive this is only temporary.

I was surprised he was still able to put up 5+3
Cowboys use a lot of 2 TE sets. Against the Bills a couple of weeks ago, even from behind, the Cowboys used formations that put Buffalo in a nickel situation only five or six times all night. It wasn't much more than that against Minnesota.

I had this recorded on Short Cuts, wanted to take a better look. Didn't get a chance to see it, DVR messed up and had to reformat it. Lost everything I had recorded. When they were in nickel it looked like it was always Leber, is that right?

Yep, there was one play that I saw Greenway in the nickel early in the first quarter, but after that was all Leber I believe.

Bump.

Any change this week? I did not see the game but from the box score it looks like Greenway was pretty active in pass defense.

I'm gonna record it ... I'll report back

Okay ... just watched it on Short Cuts. Very interesting! There was several times when the Raiders were 2 and long/3rd and long and all 3 LB's were on the field. There was a 3rd and long midway thru the 2nd quarter and the last minute or so of the half, the Vikes were in nickel and it was Leber. There were a few times, and it can be difficult to tell on Short Cuts, plus I dont have HD, It looked like Greenway was in nickel instead of Leber.

Now here is where it gets interesting ... with the game on the line in the final minute plus (1:46), the Vikes were in dime and it was Greenway :pics:

He played pretty good, picked off a pass (but fumbled it back) next play almost had another pick (PD). In Oakland final series, Greenway had a pick, 1 PD (2 counting the INT) and 4 solos. I don't see much of the Vikings, so not sure about their dime package, I thought it was Henderson. I think the future will be bright for Greenway, as I think eventually, he will not leave the field. The nickel situation between Greenway and Leber was more balanced than the last game I watched.

Where I live we get the Viking games on a regular basis. I honestly have not paid close attention to Greenway but as the season has gone on he seems to be in there more making big plays in passing situations. Greenway owners should be happy as he seems to be growing into a steady LBer in all situations as the season has gone on. I think he looks to have a strong future.

Greenway may be one of those "Big Play" LB's. You know the type ... the one who seems to be in the right place at the right time, ala Derrick Brooks. Now before I get lashed, :goodposting: I'm not forecasting him to be another Brooks , just saying he may be an opportunistic LB ... like DB. Seems like some guys just have the knack.

By Gamebook, it appears it was just a poor game for the LB's. Leber had only 1 solo, Henderson had 3 (4 counting his sack).

Detroit had a grand total of 7 rush attempts and it appears 1 of those was JT O'Sullivan recovering his own fumble.

I plan on recording this, I'll post something on it later.

The Lions had THREE rushing attempts in the first 55 or so minutes of the game.

I just watched it on Short Cuts. Greenway played a total of 14 snaps.

Of those snaps:

1 was a penalty (no play)

1 was a Viking TD pass (no tackle) he did bite hard on the play action fake which in turn left the back wide open.

1 was a sack by Kevin Williams

1 was a fumbled snap by Detroit QB (O'Sullivan)

2 were incompletions

Now ... we're down to 8 plays with tackle ops.

2 plays he rushed the passer.

4 plays were completions, 3 nowhere near him.

2 were running plays

The first running play was on the oppostie side of the field, he had nice pursuit and nearly made a diving tackle.

On the second, he turned the play back inside.

I didn't chart Leber, but I would say he played a few more plays than Chad. The Vikings were in their dime package many times and it was Henderson as the sole LB. For Greenway owners ... I wouldn't let this game discourage you, but I'd think twice before starting him vs Detroit. :goodposting:

Great stuff Rozelle, thanks.

Middle linebacker E.J. Henderson also missed his second day because of the flu, but it's not expected to affect his availability for Sunday.

Childress said Dontarrious Thomas and Chad Greenway have been taking turns at middle linebacker in Henderson's absence.

Prolly won't amount to anything.

Hopefully this will translate into more nickel snaps. :blackdot:

Leslie Frazier Q&A

Q: What are your expectations for Chad Greenway this year? Are 20 or 30 tackles more this year doable for him you think?

A: I think the sky is the limit for Chad. Just watching him move around and things he’s done this offseason in the conditioning program, he looks like a totally different player. I thought he had a good first year. Some people say it wasn’t his rookie year, but in a lot of ways it was his rookie year. I think he’s going to be a very good player for us this season, and he’ll be tremendously improved. I really believe that.
