JOHNSON WANTS TO BE OCHO CINCO, LEGALLY

Posted by Michael David Smith on August 12, 2008, 7:24 p.m. EDT

Bengals wide receiver Chad Johnson was fined $5,000 for wearing “Ocho Cinco” on the back of his jersey before a game in 2006.

To avoid getting fined, Johnson hasn’t done it since then. But Johnson now has a plan for how he can get away with having “Ocho Cinco” spelled out over the “85″ on his back.

We’ve learned that Johnson has taken the first steps in the state of Florida toward legally changing his last name to Ocho Cinco.

Seriously.

If Johnson follows through on this, his actual, legal name will be Chad Ocho Cinco, and the NFL would then (we assume) allow him to put his new last name on the back of his jersey.

From a business standpoint, this might be Chad’s way of picking up some of the extra cash that he wants to make but that the team has said it won’t give him. The jersey would instantly become one of the NFL’s top sellers, and NFL players get a cut of all sales of their jerseys.

In recent interviews, including one on ESPN Monday night, Johnson has made veiled references about future plans that he has said will change the way fans think about him. This is a strange one, to say the least.

"look at me! i'm ocho cinco"

- seriously, this guy's act was beyond old last year. hard to fathom how he could be more annoying.....yet somehow....

I wouldn't put that past him at all, and it's perfect business sense.

Regardless of how stupid it may or may not be.

actually, my favorite is when the sideline reporter (in this latest pre-season game) asked him how he was feeling.. .he said, "about 85%"

dude is just too funny... would be another thing if he didn't perform, but he always does.

:excited: I was rolling on the floor. Seriously, change your name to ocho cinco. hillarious

To quote T.O. "I love me some me."

I think it's pretty funny. That jersey is going to sell like crazy, so it does make business sense too.

"What a great tip-toe catch on the sidelines there by Chad Ocho Cinco!" Everyone will now be forced to call him that also. How great is that?

Or maybe he just wants to be on the BlackEyedJoe All-Name Team?

Ive never seen a guy get so much mileage from playing on such bad/mediocre teams. I know the guy catches plenty of balls, but he's had 10TDs ONCE in his 7 seasons, and been a part of ONE winning team. Imo, its all about scoring TDs and winning games. His team doesnt win enough, and he's averaged 7 scores/season in the NFL. Certainly decent #s, and again, obviously he puts up yardage, but Im not overly impressed with garbage stats produced by loudmouthed wideouts on teams that dont play defense. He's been in the league 7 years and hasnt yet produced 50TDs? With all that mouth?

Ocho's a funny guy, obviously. We can all appreciate that. But the HOF jacket, the embarassing, non-stop offseason antics to get himself traded or released, and the name change? Im sorry. If that's a standup act, its getting booed off the stage mercilessly.

But to simplify, you score 12 or 13 TDs on more than a couple of occasions, Ill not only laugh at your jokes, but Ill also take you seriously when the time comes. You score 10 times once after 7 years and talk like that, Im only gonna laugh.

Why do we have to take professional athletes seriously? It's a GAME. I friggin GAME, for God's sake. Who cares what an entertainer does, whether it is a comedian, actor, or athlete? People need to find something better to do with their time if this type of stuff is that important to them. Did I mention that football is a GAME?

I can appreciate your opinion. And thanks for the enlightenment. But guys dont get paid millions of dollars anymore to play a "GAME". They get paid all those millions to take care of BUSINESS. Id say about 98% of those guys will tell you the same. But I really do respect your opinion, and for the most part agree.

I respect you back, but as fans, why do we care? I get it if the Bengals organization was pissed at this stuff (I don't think they are) or the coaching stuff... or even his teammates. But us? Meh. Hell, I think the only reason Cincinnati has gotten the recent recognition (2 MNF games last year, ESPN coverage) is because of his antics. This is added revenue to the ball club.

 For real people... Taker ez. He's just having fun. At least he's not out there cutting up coke with credit cards, has gun charges, "making it rain", breaking teamates' noses, or anything like that. Football is a game and he's just trying to bring a lil' comedic relief.I mean the guy went 1400+yds with 90+ rec.'s He's still taking care of business ON the field

To be honest, I really dont care that much. So, to an extent, I pretty much heed your advice in just about all of these cases where athletes act a little too much like premadonna-attention wh@#$%(you know what I mean). Im just more old school than new. And I appreciate guys like Marvin Harrison and Jerry Rice alot more than TO and Ocho. The extreme cases like Johnson just wear me a little thin because it's somewhat "sell-outish" in an effort to draw more attention and drive more coin his way, which we can all respect to a degree. I just respect the guys like Harrison, Andre Reed, Art Monk, etc, etc who simply let their performances do the talking. But I guess what really irks me about Johnson, and really the only thing because I do love alot of his stuff, is the way he's thrown his team completely under the bus starting at the Superbowl. He went on a relentless tirade that really was a bit classless. Never really seen anything like it other than the TO behavior while with the Eagles. But youre right, we shouldnt take any of this stuff too seriously. Good advice.

He's my #1 WR. I love the guy. He's funny and on Sundays he's all business. Last here he was disgruntled because his team was losing and he stopped his antics. Now that's he's back at it, it's a good sign imo that he's stoked up to be all business again. I was laughing like crazy during his interview with Suzy. 85% healthy...love it. He's gonna come back strong and play some football this year

I'm not sure it's an act with Chad. He seems to me to be just that sort of whacko nutcase.

Brings back memories of Michael Jackson - Michael Dyson from Cleveland.

I don't care what his last name is... just quit dropping balls that hit you in the hands, and don't walk out of bounds short of the marker on 4th down.

Isn't that what George Costanza was going to call his first kid? Oh wait that was Seven.

Chad, stealing his material from a 90's sitcom.

In the XFL, He Hate Me became one of the most well known, best selling jerseys to my recollection. The stage was set years ago. In the totality of what many celebrities do to get more publicity and money, this isn't too far in left field.

BTW, let's not forget that many celebrities change their birth names in favor of business interests. Why can't athletes do the same?

:goodposting: Some people just like to complain. Chad's the man.Randy Moss should leagally change his name to Straight Cash Homey. That would be too funny.

Maybe Brett would consider changing his name to "Farve" so everyone would finally be pronouncing it correctly?

Why the hell not?
do you realize how stupid he's going to look when he's going by Ocho Cinco 10 years after he's no longer in the public eye?
Not nearly as stupid as he's going to look when he has to dole out about 2 million dollars to the guy wearing 85 on the next team he goes to. If I am a receiver on another team, I immediately switch to 85 just on the chance he doesn't re-sign with Cincy (great chance) and lands on my team. Then demand $2 million for the number.
