CINCINNATI -- As promised, Cincinnati Bengals receiver Chad Johnson showed up for the first day of team minicamp Thursday. JohnsonThe disgruntled receiver arrived for the 8 a.m. team meeting. The first practice began at 9:45 a.m. and Johnson was on the field at 9:57.Johnson didn't run any routes or catch a single pass during the morning practice. Bengals coach Marvin Lewis said Johnson expressed to the medical staff that he had an ailment and was unable to participate. Lewis didn't specify the ailment and added that the team will investigate Johnson's claim. According to Johnson's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, Johnson's ankle is bothering him, and he may need arthroscopy this summer. Johnson's back also has been aching. Both ailments are from last season. The Bengals released a statement before the afternoon practice that, to a degree, conflicted Johnson's claims: "Chad Johnson was given a physical this morning by one of the Bengals' team doctors. He did not report any physical problems to the doctor, and he was cleared by the doctor for practice. Later, after the physical was concluded, Chad told our training staff that his back was sore. He refused to practice."Johnson has been sending mixed signals for the past few weeks on whether he was going to rejoin the team. He was adamant this offseason about his desire to be traded, but the Bengals did not seriously entertain his requests. Had he missed this minicamp, he would have been subject to an $8,000 fine.
that last sentence is key. This could get uglier quick...The Bengals have just released this statement in response to comments by agent Drew Rosenhaus that Chad Johnson has an ankle injury."Chad Johnson was given a physical this morning by one of the Bengals' team doctors. He did not report any physical problems to the doctor, and he was cleared by the doctor to practice. Later, after the physical was concluded, he told our training staff that his back was sore. we can debate whether he's overrated, but he's definitely a drama queenoverrated drama queen.
precisely. Do I have to quote AI here? ETA: Beat me to itRotoworld:Wasn't this the same thing TO pulled a couple years ago?
this could get ugly. I get the feeling the front office is going to play hardball and not give in to trade demands due to the bonus money that has been paid by the reworking of his last deal. CJ will continue making a circus out of camp. CJ seems like a the kind of baby that will put forth the worst effort if he doesn't get what he wants. maybe even deliberately dropping passes in a game to be spitefull. Either he's getting traded or he'll be the biggest cancer, maybe to the point where he'll get suspendedI love how the team seems to have the mentality of moving forward despite his ####. Palmer and Simpson seem to be working very closely, and I love the fact that the Bengals went as heavy as they did at Wr in the draft and free agency. It gets overlooked, but they went early at Wr, and likely, one or both (Simpson & Caldwell) will be heavily involved before it's all said and done.
fly, eagles, fly....Interesting. I really think he's going to be with another team before training camp starts.....
He was on the bike in a Lance Armstrong uniform.Wasn't this the same thing TO pulled a couple years ago?

I get the impression there's still tension between the two. Lewis sounds like he's poking at Chad when he says, "When you gonna come show me some love?" He's antagonizing him and Chad falls for it and shows his true colors with the cameras everywherebcat01 said:Here is a link with a brief conversation between Lewis and Chad. To each his own I guess. After seeing the same video I can away with the impression that Lewis has no clue what he is doing. A HC should not be asking for "love" from his players. He shouldn't care one whit whether they like him or not. What he should care about is if they respect him and will give 100% for him. Everything I saw in both videos shows me a picture of a coach who has no control over his lockerroom and no clue how to get it.I get the impression there's still tension between the two. sholditch said:OK, when everyone was freaking about his holdout I laid out the Rosenhaus playbook, and turned out to be right. The first part was threatening a holdout from camp and then reporting to camp anyway. Here's the second part:
1. Show up for OTAs and minis but make up an ailment and sit for part of it
I'll go one step further and say that the mix up about the back and the ankle was on purpose to let everyone know that there is still potential trouble and they are still serious about whatever it is they really want (I still beleive they'd be just as happy with a max contract as with a trade)
2. Get the media talking about the situation again
Check
3. Overcome mysterious ailment and practice once point has been gotten across
Check
4. Take any and every interview granted and use every single one to negotiate with the team through the media
Coming soon...
5. Once camp begins mysterious ailment reappears...wait for reaction from media and Bengals, repeat steps 3 & 4
6. In final week of camp, undergo a "change of heart" once it is clear a trade will not happen until the offseason; get back in QB's, HC's good graces
7. Post monster numbers in 08, playing in all 16 games
8. Bengals miss playoffs once again due to team dysfunction, lack of defense, Lewis fired in offseason
9. Depending on new coach, either ask for better deal or trade.
10. Manage media reaction, portray CJ as a guy who will always play his hardest, but really just wants the chance to play for a team that is committed to winning a championship, turn image of CJ from crybaby to would-be champion, victimized by a team that just wants to waste his talent
That is the Rosenhaus playbook, If you think it won't happen, look at TO. Remember all the talk about how he came back from a broken leg to play in the SB? Notice how little people talk about TO as a problem anymore? The only change is that Rosenhaus learned that he pushed it too hard with TO and the Eagles. He has been noticeably more diplomatic in his team relations since.
The funny thing is that this quote is from the TO fiasco in 2005. Comparing the two situations:The official said teams in the NFL are aware of Rosenhaus' tactics. He
gets a player, goes public with contract demands and then attempts to
get the team to engage him in a public debate about the worth of his
player. He believes deep down Rosenhaus knows he has no shot with the
Eagles, "I think he just picked on the wrong opponent," he said. "Right
now there is no back and forth negociation. It's one party talking so
loud it's forced the team to make a statement and I'd be shocked if you
heard the team comment again on this. Because that's the agent's trap
that he sets...that once you start talking, then you're engaged, that
becomes publicized and then he can uses that to his benefit."

One year after TO signed a long-term deal with the Eagles he wants a new contractTwo years after Johnson sign a long-term deal with the Bengals he wants a new contract. In terms of 'new money,' and just being unique from the standpoint of being able to do something for a player who still had four years left on his [existing] contract, it's really monumental," said agent Drew Rosenhaus, who was hired by Johnson a year ago to upgrade his contract "As long as I've been doing this, I've never been able to get an extension like this, basically because of the time remaining on the contract. It's historical. And it's a testament to Chad, and how well he's performed, and to Bengals management for the way they have handled this and the commitment they've made to him. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2415464
Look at how he has handled similar situations since TO. I think he took a lesson from that that these things can go too far and it could actually hurt his career. I seem to remember one or two big-name clients dropping him for other agents after that and I think he pulled back. I think what happened with Briggs is more his newer, more diplomatic style.

Speaking for the first time at Bengals minicamp Friday, Chad Johnson said, "I'm happy. I don't have nothing to be mad about."
Johnson insisted he was in a good mood on Thursday as well. NFL Network reporter Scott Hansen, who was kissed on the cheek by Ocho Cinco in a response to a question, probably agrees. The Bengals don't seem to know where this is going, but it looks like Johnson is backing down from any possibility of "going T.O." on them. Jun. 13 - 12:42 pm et
