Changing careers in your 50’s - any good stories? (1 Viewer)

I don't think I'd be brave enough to do that unless I was forced to (or I was financially independent where I didn't need the paycheck to get by).  Good luck, dude!

It’s time for change, would love to hear good and bad experiences from posters who  have done it.
good for you, FW.

I've thought about it too, but as the sole breadwinner with 2 young kids (11 & 15), no way it's possible unless something crazy falls in my lap.

I actually just started back in an office TODAY as an employee for the first time in ages- I've been a consultant/independent contractor for a loooong time. that's my "big" career change. all with the hope of it leading to senior leadership role and a few pennies more to feed the kids.

and I do think this is the time- still have another 10-20 years of viable career... which is enough time to make a decent run at something.

The only thing I will say is age discrimination is real. So make sure you can learn something new and become great at it quickly. Otherwise you’ll always be at risk. Unless you’re your own boss and in control of your destiny.

It sure is a thing.  Basically I would be going from a small wholesaler to a casino.  I’m staring at two knee replacements down the road,.  The supply chain issues, and uncertain economy with pricing is just too much for me now.  Boss wants me to stay. And run the business - at a pay cut.  A pay cut isn’t a consideration.

20 years at 50?

This is hard to answer. For me, a 56 y/o self-employed copywriter, yes, I'm going to 70 and beyond. I love the work, I make money, I make the rules, so why not?

Going to a regular job though... yea, not so much.

My wife is a real estate paralegal, and just turned 60. We moved from NY to NC last year, and she left a 30-year position. We weren't sure what her prospects would be... are 59 y/o females getting hired? Guess we were going to find out how bad age discrimination was. Turns out, in her field anyway, there was zero issue, and she's had no trouble finding good work (she's changed jobs a few times in the last year looking for the right fit - looks like she might have found the right one now). She looked in her field and related (closings / title / loans / etc) and got plenty of interest/offers. It was good to see that the more professional positions really valued her experience.

I would guess different industries view that differently though.

Did it at 30, not 50.

im tired thinking about it 🤣

I did it out of necessity at 40.  I was (and am again) in the real estate development / construction industry, and back in the 2008-9ish range, the market took a huge dump and I could not find any work in the industry.  Fortunately, a good friend was a senior manager and was able to hire me at a company up in the Twin Cities.... completely different industry (financial customer service / project management).  I took to it like a duck to water, though.  So much so that I was promoted to a team lead within a year and would have likely moved up again had I stayed there (was there from 2012-14).  I ended up getting an old job back in California that was in my preferred real estate development industry.  I was appreciative of the opportunity and everything, but I missed doing what I loved.  It was a huge leap of faith but it worked out.

Good luck!
