Changing keeper league rules (1 Viewer)

I'm in a league at work and certain teams would like to change some of the rules. I'm concerned about changes to the league and when they should be changed. How far out do you make changes when it is a keeper league?

All year long people have been making trades based on certain assumptions. Now there are teams (weaker teams) who want to lower the number of keepers. Is it fair to the teams who have built their team over the past year to make this change for NEXT year? Or do you make them over a year out?

If changes are made, then they should occur at the right time which will be fair to all. Reducing keepers from 5 to 4 because your team only has 4 keepers seems selfish.

Shouldn't you give them more notice? For those that are commishiners, do let the league decide or try and make the best call for all.

League rules for redrafts are easier to handle. This is my first keeper league as commish.

Thanks.

We typically have an owners meeting some time during the NFL playoffs where a core group of about 5-6 owners is Always there, although everyone is welcome. Those that cannot attend, can give elect someone that will be present to be their "proxy" vote on all or just certain issues that will be discussed, or bring up issues that they would like to be addressed.

Any proposed rule changes are then discussed, and voted on, then sent out to the rest of the league as final.

One other means that I've found to be effective in rule changes is instituting a 2/3 or 3/4 majority vote to pass a rule change. That means 8 or 9 of the owners must agree with the rule changes to pass. If its a competitive league, that should eliminate the selfish motives of a few owners looking to change rules to their own advantage.FWIW, I am in a keeper league that did vote to reduce keepers from 8 to 5 ( in the name of competitive balance -- I voted against it ) The same league is now voting to return to 8. I guess the teams that didn't draft well year 1 got enough keeper quality guys from the extra 3 every team had to drop.

You should make any new rules effective after next year's draft (so people can work them into their strategies going forward). That can be a tough sell since you wind up waiting a year and a half, but it's more fair.

This is the rule we've always used - rules changes voted in do not take place until the following season - AND changes to the rules require a 9 out of 12 team approval rating - no simple majority vote.

I always say at the draft for the following year. As you said, certain trades might have only gone through because you thought you could protect a player. If you would like to add something different let owners protect as many (or as few) up to 5 players, with each player protected counting as a draft pick in your upcoming draft. ie if you protect 5 players you don't get a pick until the 6th round. We did this in one league I am in and it really mixes up who is considered a "protectable guy"

we changed our keeper rule his year...seems pretty smooth.

beforehand:

keep 2 palyers drafted in the 6th rd or later.

caused a problem b/c the 6th round would be a run on rookie RBs and throw off the raft. plus, person drafting in the 1 spot also had first crack at the best rookie.

change:

keep 0-2 palyers. Every past keepr on your team was randfathered in as a 6th rd pick. Anyone else you kept would be at a price of 2 draft rds higher then where you drafted them last year. (drafted a player in rd 7, can keep him this year at a 5th....you simply did not get a pick in that round.). you can keep him another year, but at a 2 rd cost then the year before. This also ensures that most of the best people are still in the draft being you can't keep any 1st or 2nd rounders.

We vote on rule changes after the season is over. Because teams make moves during the season based on the current rules, most rule changes do not take affect until after the following season is over.

Here is what we do.

12 Team Keeper League

Every year we lose a guy or two who does not come back but the core 8-9 guys have been together for 6 years plus.

When rules change it happens they day of the draft. During the summer all rules are submitted to commish and co-commish and on draft day they are voted on.

In you scenario the rule would be voted on at draft which is after keepers are due so rule takes affect following year.

If there is a tie then the tiebreaker goes to the league champion. (winning has good points)

If your league wants to level out you can try the following.

Based on 12 Teams

Say you keep 4 usually. This year start off keep 3 instead. Let team #12 take player from team #1 after his 3 are protected.

#12 from #1

#10 from #2

etc etc

One the bottom 6 teams get one player from top 6 then you protect original amount.

Long winded but hope it helps.

I don't think you can change the rules for the upcoming season - in your case 2007. In our keeper league we have changed rules several times (nothing wrong with changing them, it has kept our league interesting). Each time we have made a rule change in the Spring and it didn't go into effect until the following season. This gives owners a full season to adjust their plans for the new rules. This is the only fair way to do it.I guess if you can get every person in the league to want to change them you could do it for next year, but from what you said above that seems unlikely.
