Changing of the guard at QB in Oakland? (1 Viewer)

Looks like Dennis Allen might have been serious about starting Pryor, giving him the first reps in practice.

Crazier things have happened.

Well, Oakland is holding Flynn out with elbow tendinitis. There's really two opposite viewpoints:

1) Teams protect their starters after the third preseason game. Most starters don't play in the fourth game, especially this year with the short turn-around to Thursday night games. Therefore, Flynn is getting normal starter protection. Flynn isn't taking reps with the second-team, this is the normal routine for a team that wants to protect their starting quarterback that is not going to play in the fourth preseason game.

2) Flynn hasn't looked good enough to be a starter and the team wants to take a long look at Pryor with the first team and starting a preseason game. Unlike Rex Ryan, the Raiders realize they can't just throw Flynn out with the second team, so they are using the tendonitis as a smoke screen to allow Pryor reps and to evaluate Pryor without totally destroying Flynn's confidence.

The Terrelle Pryor thread has some pretty good discussion. Change the guard indeed!

I was just surprised by the news. Good insight though. Flynn got cut in my 12 team superflex dynasty league so I jumped first and decided to ask questions.

Of course.

Though I think it has more to do with seeing a lot more of Pryor than Flynn's confidence.

ETA: And to limit the "QB controversy" chatter a little longer.

Smokescreen or not, tendinitis or not, true changing of the guard or not, Pryor has at least earned the shot to start based on his play compared to Flynn so far.

It's going to be Pryor because he is a playmaker (not saying a good QB). Oakland is a need of playmakers. If they are smart, they will adjust the offense to fit his skills (read option, roll outs, and a heavy dose of run).

Neither has looked very good as a passer. Pryor has the ability to make plays with his legs. From the outside it would seem a no-brainer.

Especially when we have seen the last two years what a difference that running ability can make. From a terrible passer like to Tebow to an ok passer like Vick to a good passer like RG3.

Oakland's HC Dennis Allen doesn't want to look reactionary to the fan base that is chanting "Pryor, Pryor Pryor!" at the top of their lungs from the black hole. But he has shown he's willing to correct a mistake in judgment and concede to change, dumping OC Greg Knapp and scrapping his failed ZBS system from last year.

I think this upcoming Seattle game will either vallidate Allen's convictions to keep Flynn as his starter, or Pryor will have put together another highlight package that will force his hand and name him the starter. Of course with Reggie McKenzie's blessing and the proper head nod from Mark Davis.

But I expect the Seattle starting defense will throw a wet blanket on the "pryor-mania". Especially with the Raiders starting a raw rookie Melenik Watson at LT, who has never played the position in his life at any level, Pryor will be running for his life. Then the discussion will go back to Flynn as the entrenched starter working with the first unit and preparing for the Colts. But if Pryor can have a repeat of what he did against the Bears, look out! I don't see how they can't keep him on the bench.

There's a full blown QB controversy right now in Oakland, and if long as the losses begin to pile up under Flynn, it will be inevitable that the coaching staff will have to make the switch to Pryor. When that happens, he'll be the waiver wire darling that everyone will be bidding heavy to get on their fantasy roster. With his scrambling and playmaking ability, he's got the potential to put up QB1 stats.

C'mon man.

A long time ago I read an article in The Chicago Sun-Times about the Bears' qb controversy at the time (Kramer vs Harbaugh I think). Essentially the article stated: The 49'ers have a qb controversy (Montana vs Young) - the Bears have a qb debacle. This would seem similar

Pryor should win the starting job based on his style of play and out of nessecity. The loss of LT Veldheer was huge for the Raiders. Whoever the starting QB is will be running for his life, at least Pryor will be able to make plays on the ground at times. Flynn will be chucking and ducking all year, it will just be a matter of time before Pryor starts, one way or another.

I remember people saying come on man about cam newton before his rookie year. They said he couldn't throw the ball accurately. He was too aw and a major project at the nfl level. They questioned his character. Blah blah blah.

Any qb gifted with pryors size, speed and athleticism can be a qb1 if they have even average accuracy. Even slightly below avg accuracy.

Pryors accuracy actually hasn't looked that bad through 3 preseason games. He makes a lot of throws from an awkward position and off his back foot at times BC he is constantly scrambling, but like Big Ben he still seems to stick the throws where they need to go while on the run.

If he ja named the starter I'm sure he will have his share of INTs this year but they will come along with close to 1000 yards rushing, 10+ rushing Tds, 2500 yards passing and 15-20 passing Tds.

Don't think those numbers equate to qb1?

I just picked him up in both my redraft leagues, dropping fringe bench players for him. I'm also targeting him in my dynasty auction this Friday night.

If any of you have even the slightest interest in what could be this years mike Vick circa 2010 pick up Pryor now before he is named the starter. If he isn't, I would still stash him for the first several games of the season. If Flynn falters he will be on a short leash.

When the fans clamor for a player like the way are with Pryor right now and the team is bad and desperate for answers, more times than not they will go with the raw electric player with sky high upside over the average player who's upside is limited.
