Key free agent Phillips signs new six-year contract

Linebacker Shaun Phillips was handed his opportunity last season and made the most of it. Phillips jumped into his first full-time starting role that now appears his for the long-term.

Today Phillips signed a new six-year contract with the Chargers that will keep him in San Diego through the 2012 season. The signing eliminates Phillips’ opportunity of becoming a restricted free agent on March 2.

“Shaun is an integral part of our defense,” said General Manager A.J. Smith. “He is a great pass rusher and last year he solidified his talents as an outstanding player against both the run and the pass. His play and his production speak for themselves. He made a lot of big plays for us last year that helped us win football games, and I’m excited to have the opportunity to watch him continue to do that over the years to come.”

“The key in this league is keeping your best players, and Shaun is another example of how this organization is committed to doing that,” said Head Coach Norv Turner. “I’ve had to coach against Shaun the last few years and he’s become an outstanding complete player. He’s one of many guys that I’m really looking forward to working with.”

Phillips became a full-time starter in 2006 and delivered a breakout season. He racked up a career-high 11.5 sacks to rank ninth in the league overall and second among NFL linebackers, behind only teammate Shawne Merriman (17). The Chargers became one of only two NFL teams this season to feature two players with at least 11 sacks and it was the first time since 1994 that two Lightning Bolts had at least 11 sacks in the same season. Phillips led the team with six tackles for loss, while he and Merriman tied for the team lead with four forced fumbles. He finished the season with 63 tackles.

Phillips was involved in several key plays during the season:

* Making just his fourth career start in the Bolts’ season-opener on Sept. 11 in Oakland on ESPN, Phillips racked up a pair of sacks.

* In a Sunday Night Football game against Pittsburgh on Oct. 8, Phillips had a sack, three tackles for loss and a quarterback pressure that led to the game-clinching interception by Marlon McCree.

* In a 48-19 win at San Francisco on Oct. 15, Phillips had two sacks and tipped a pass at the line of scrimmage that was intercepted by Luis Castillo.

* In the Chargers’ come-from-behind win at Cincinnati on Nov. 12, Phillips sacked Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer early in the fourth quarter. On the play, he forced and recovered a fumble after the Chargers had closed to within 38-35. One play after his theft, LaDainian Tomlinson scored a touchdown to give the Bolts a 42-38 lead.

* During a Dec. 10 NBC Sunday Night Football game at Denver when the Broncos were driving for a potential game-tying score late in the fourth quarter, Phillips sacked Broncos quarterback Jake Plummer and forced him to fumble. The Broncos recovered the fumble, but the clock expired as both teams scurried for the loose ball and the Chargers escaped with their first victory at Denver since 1999.

Phillips is the latest on a long list of core Chargers players who have signed long-term extensions with the team. A total of 24 players are under contract with the Bolts through at least the 2009 season, eight of whom are signed through at least 2011.

6 year deal only 13 million guaranteed.... no word yet on the signing bonus

It will be interesting to compare this contract to the one Donnie Edwards signs with his new team.

The Chargers signed LB Shaun Phillips to a six-year contract that will guarantee him $13 million. Phillips, a fourth-round draft pick in 2004, ranked second among NFL linebackers with 11 1/2 sacks in 2006, behind only teammate LB Shawne Merriman. Phillips becomes the 20th core player the Chargers have signed through at least 2009, and he is the 18th player who is 27 years old or younger.

After a day full of excitement at Chargers Park on Monday, the Chargers delivered more good news Tuesday.

Linebacker Shaun Phillips, who was scheduled to become a restricted free agent on March 2, signed a new six-year contract that will keep him in San Diego through the 2012 season.

“Everyone is familiar with my philosophy of identifying our own talent and tie up guys that are in our program, and we’re thrilled that Shaun is going to be with us for years to come,” General Manager A.J. Smith said. “He is a great pass rusher and last year he solidified his talents as a two-dimensional player. He’s developed into an outstanding player against both the run and the pass. We think he has a bright future.”

Had Phillips hit the open market, he surely would have drawn a bevy of interest. With his status as a restricted free agent, the Chargers would have had the opportunity to match any offer Phillips received, but the third-year linebacker didn’t see any reason to entertain offers.

“This is where I wanted to be all along,” Phillips said. “I’ve got my family here. Stephen Cooper, Shawne Merriman, Luis Castillo and all those guys that I’m so close to … I’m so excited about getting to continue playing with them. It feels great that the Chargers committed to me, and I’m committed to them. I’m looking forward to being here for a long time.”

Phillips is the latest on a long list of core Chargers players who have signed long-term extensions with the team. A total of 24 players are under contract with the Bolts through at least the 2009 season, eight of whom are through at least 2011. The long-term commitment President Dean Spanos has made to so many of his teammates proved to be a strong selling point to Phillips.

“You see that commitment and it’s given us a chance to be a great team for a long time,” Phillips said. “We’ve got the chance to develop something really special because all of the great players and great people who are here. We just have to all keep our eyes on that big prize. We’re all going to keep trying to be the best every day. The sky is the limit for what we could be.”

One of first people to congratulate Phillips on his new contract was Head Coach Norv Turner, who expressed a sense of relief over the fact that he can now prepare game plans with Phillips and not against him.

“I’ve had to coach against Shaun the last few years and he’s proven to be a great pass rusher as and a very good run defender,” Turner said. “He’s become an outstanding complete player. The key in this league is keeping your best players, and Shaun is another example of how this organization is committed to doing that. He’s one of many guys that I’m really looking forward to working with.”

Phillips became a full-time starter in 2006, his third professional season, and he proved to be a game-changer. He racked up a career-high 11.5 sacks to rank ninth in the NFL and second among linebackers, trailing only Merriman. The Chargers were one of just two teams in the NFL to feature two players with at least 11 sacks, and it was the first time since 1994 that the Chargers had two players reach double digits in the same season. Phillips led the team with six tackles for loss and tied Merriman for the team lead with four forced fumbles.

He made several game-changing plays along the way that contributed greatly to the Chargers’ 14-2 season.

“The numbers are there,” Smith said. “His play and his production speak for themselves. He made a lot of big plays for us last year that helped us win football games, and I’m excited to have the opportunity to watch him continue to do that over the next several seasons.”

Redding, Wuehrmann dismissed

Strength and conditioning coach Dave Redding and coaching administrator John Wuehrmann were dismissed Tuesday morning. As he stated Monday, Turner anticipates keeping all of the position coaches that he inherited.

every long term contract signed early this offseason is a good move (unless the player is a complete turd).

Football salaries about to hit a growth explosion.

Linebacker Shaun Phillips' new contract illustrates how the Chargers have gotten so many young players locked up long-term.

Phillips received a $7 million signing bonus and is due a $3 million roster bonus this month. His salary for 2007 is $1 million. He gets another roster bonus of $3 million next offseason and an '08 salary of $2.4 million.

Including the $100,000 workout bonus he gets each offseason, that's a virtually guaranteed $16.6 million in his first two years, an immense amount for a player who has been a starter for just one season.

On the other hand, should Phillips continue to perform as he did in 2005 and '06, his contract would be a bargain for the Chargers.

It kind of makes you wonder if there are going to be a string of holdouts by pro-bowl caliber player next summer. They signed their contract under the OLD salary caps of the past that went up a few million here, a few million there. Suddenly all these teams have a bunch of cap space and the losing bidders on these FA's can spin "cap responsability" all they want but once a few all-pro players realize they aren't making top-10 $ at their position anymore there are going to be a lot of unhappy franchise type players out there.
