Chargers to place LB Merriman on IR (1 Viewer)

He didn't look great on Sunday, he was off the field more than he was on it - not a big surprise. Ultimately this is the best thing for him and the team.

Here's hoping Shawne has successful surgery and a complete recovery! :banned:

Time for Jyles Tucker to start earning his new contract.

I'm just glad to see that the right thing/decision was ultimately made.

It's a shame that the team itself had to make it for him.

So how much is Dan Synder going to offer him in 2010? Will we see the first $1 billion signing bonus if it's an uncapped year?

i heard a week ago ( but cant remember where , probably radio or pre-season football game) that charger doctors told meriman last january he needed surgery . he opted to not have the surgery and excersize it instead . anyone else hear this ?

More confirmation from the San Diego Union Tribune:

Merriman done for the season

Shawne Merriman has decided he can play no more.

Merriman was not immediately available for comment but informed the team today he will undergo surgery immediately to repair the torn ligaments in his left knee.

Merriman played in Sunday's season opener and played well. He was particularly exceptional on the Panthers' final drive. Even as Jake Delhomme got rid of the ball quickly, Merriman had three hurries in a span of nine passes.

“Shawne informed me he did not feel right (on the field) and thought it best to shut it down,” Chargers General Manager A.J. Smith said in a statement released by the team. “The road to winning the AFC West just got more difficult, but not impossible. Nothing is impossible. Shawne is a great player and an inspirational leader. He will be missed. We wish him a successful surgery and a speedy recovery.”
