The Chargers are expected to sign receiver Az-Zahir Hakim today, according to league sources, and the former San Diego State standout should practice with the team this afternoon.

Hakim, a nine-year veteran, was to arrive in San Diego and take a physical last night.

Hakim, 29, is being added to the roster because Malcom Floyd's high ankle sprain could keep him out the remainder of the season. It is unclear whether Floyd will be placed on injured reserve or the Chargers will make a roster move with another player.

Hakim was released Oct. 30 by the Detroit Lions and has spent much of his time since then working out in San Diego. He played in six games for the Lions, catching 17 passes for 147 yards.

In addition to playing receiver, Hakim is insurance on kick returns. He was voted to the Pro Bowl in 2000 as a special teamer. Having played in two Super Bowls with the Rams, he also adds playoff experience to the roster.

Floyd's loss is unfortunate. Hakim has the ability to bring something that Floyd didn't though. Chances are that he'll rarely see the field especially with Turner coming back and getting his return duties back. Good signing nonetheless.

I expect Floyd will probably be around for the playoffs and Hakim was brought in as a back-up until then. The loss of Floyd is unfortunate, but since he and Jackson have been alternating time I think we will just see a lot more of Jackson. The Chargers don't run too many three WR sets with Gates and LT and McCardell should be coming back soon anyway.

I don't really know much about Hakim outside of name recognition from a few years ago. Anyone have insight?

Floyd just disappeared from the injury report. Not out, not doubtful, not questionable, not probable. So did he go from out on Wed to no injury today, or did they put him on IR or something?

MT you got anything for us here?

Saw on ESPN that Floyd was out for the year. 95% sure it said he was on IR. As for Az being "the missing piece"...what exactly were they missing other than a warm body for Floyd's spot? Hakim brings nothing special to the table other than a little veteranism (which they have in McCardell) and a hometown favorite (Az was at SDSU along with Faulk). An unemployed WR at this stage of the season is a patch on a microscopic hole in the Chargers. Good for him, I saw him and Marshall when they played and it was fuuun in the old WAC. The crowd will love him but I doubt he makes a significant impact.

To make room for Hakim, receiver Malcom Floyd was placed on injured reserve with a high ankle sprain.

Poor Floyd, does that make him inelligible for the playoffs?Does this increase VJ's prospects? Looks like McCardell will play, but if VJ got his normal workload plus Floyd's he could continue to get the targets he's received the last few weeks. Do you think that happens, or will Osgood or Hakim get Floyd's targets?

Thanks for the find MT!
