The Detroit News

Former Detroit Lions receiver Charles Rogers of Michigan State is likely to sign with a Canadian Football League team, ESPN.com is reporting.

"He wants to play again and it's the best opportunity for him to show he can play again," Rogers' agent, Jason Fletcher, is quoted as saying.

Rogers, the second overall pick in the 2003 NFL draft, played for the Lions for three seasons before being released after training camp in 2006.

Rogers, 26, caught 36 passes for 440 yards and four touchdowns in his NFL career.

Biggest WR bust ever. If he played QB instead of WR, we'd be mentioning his name in the same sentence as the immortal Ryan Leaf.

Not even close. Rogers is a huge bust but injury played a huge role in it. Leaf was acquired with SD giving away the next ten years to move up one spot to grab him. And it was his 2 cent brain that led him to be the biggest bust in sports history. I don't think anyone can ever bomb hard enough to be in the same sentence as leaf.

i must say i totally missed on this one. I thought for sure Charles Rogers was going to be the next big thing when he was coming out.

A lot of people missed on him - not just the Lions. It was rumored he had smoked pot in college but everyone just wrote it off because they wanted to believe he was going to be the next Randy Moss.

just playing devil's advocate......I guess his NFL days are behind him, but as a KC fan....wouldn't they maybe bring in a guy like this and pay him the league minimum.....is he really that bad to where he couldn't be a 4th or 5th on a team.....especially a team like the Chiefs...and there have to be other places you would think he could fit in......will he make more $ in the CFL then as a 4th or 5th in the NFL...?

The Vikings too.

He is running the 40 in the 4.8 range. Nobody wants that. I can guarantee someone would give him a shot if he was running sub 4.4's like he used to.

He's going to need a year in the CFL just to get himself back into football shape. Maybe after that he can tryout for an NFL roster again, but expectations are somewhere between none and very low.

I disagree that injuries played a huge role in it, although I agree that his inability to put in the work to bother trying to come back strong from injuries played a part in it. He blew chunks even when healthy, had a horrible attitude, and had pretty much no work ethic. Also, I agree that it'd be hard for anyone to TOP Leaf (given what SD had to give up to get him in the first place), but I think if Lions fans had had to suffer through several years of Charles Rogers playing QB, I don't think there'd be any question that he belonged in the conversation. Remember, a bust at WR doesn't hurt the product on the field to anywhere NEAR the same level as a bust at QB. I bet most Lions fans would argue that Joey Harrington was more detrimental to their team than Charles Rogers, despite the fact that Joey Harrington is only a mini-bust compared to a bust of epic proportions. Joey Harrington is, after all, still in the league, still finding suitors for his services, and about to start for his third team. Harrington was a high pick who became a journeyman, while Rogers was a high pick who became a backup in the CFL (yes, I'm calling it now, Rogers isn't even going to start in Canadia).

If Rogers couldn't crack the top 5 WRs in Detroit, he'd be hard-pressed to do it anywhere. I mean, Rogers was a backup to MIKE WILLIAMS, another of the 5-10 biggest WR busts in NFL history. When you're getting beaten out by one of the biggest busts in history, then there's not a place for you in the NFL.

'Michael Vick rolls to his left, avoids a Roughrider... and flings a rope to his Rough Rider teammate Charles Rogers... who drops the ball !... probably not seeing it with all the we|ed smoke coming out of his helmet... Vick will surely send a dog after Rogers'...
