Charlie "Shining Path" Bosworth, RIP (1 Viewer)

I was really sad when I heard about shining path. We both had a thing for Greg LeMond, and were frustrated by unsuccessful attempts to take it to the next level with him. Someday I thought we might assuage our frustrations together, but now it's too late.

RIP, good friend.

Charles in charge of our days and our nights.

Charles in charge of our wrongs and our rights.

and I see...I want Charles in charge of me.

I sent him that to him because I thought he ran this board. Didn't he? Friday nights were always good with him around.

I remember Shining Path and the Russian Bride Draft very well. I had just dumped my XNOUGHT screen name and I had two new user names to use, Mr. Happy and The Force. The Force was given to me by Shick! as a 3-digit alias to use. My Mr. Happy alias was starting to kick into gear as my full time user name but I made sure to post with The Force once in a while to try different things and see if people responded differently if I used that user name.

At some point I ended up using my The Force alias to sign up for the Russian Bride Draft, and predictably, I was in way over my head. It was a trainwreck that ran so far out of control, that JZilla offered to be my co-owner and help with the draft, and he eventually took over most of the primary drafting duties while I fumbled around. I was out of my league, and it was because of the genius of guys like Shining Path. I couldn't run with him, few could.

He will be missed.

This was one of my favorite Sp posts ever. It combined science, history, and some humor....

 If you're leaving regular skid marks, you're nasty. Sharts happen, but a daily smudge? Gross.
You've obviously never used government issue TP. I was on the DL for a week one time with an ###### tear. No way you can clean your pooper correctly with that stuff. Afghan/Eastern European TP, and your hand in Africa fall into this category as well.
A little chafing is well worth it. I have a strategy for maximal cornhole cleanliness. When you fold the TP and go for the final few swipes, use the second knuckle (from the tip) of your middle finger to wedge the paper up there a tad. Then clench up and use the power of your own sphincter to blot on the paper. You can have everything clean up to a full quarter inch into the poop channel. Better a little blood shed with pre-emptive aggression than a brownish mess later. The Western powers learned this valuable lesson at Munich in 1938.
:shrug:Good stuff DD. Thanks.

I'm trying to imagine what this board would have been like if shiny had never graced it. One thing I'm absolutely certain of: I wouldn't have become addicted to frequenting it as I actually did. The FBG board would have been just another website among millions of websites, instead of my home page and my refuge from the mundane daily grind for several years.

Still not accepting that he's truly gone. Thank Jeebus for the archives, where much of his wit and wisdom can continue to lighten and enlighten us with a simple :bump: needed every so often.

I've been thinking of something to say for the past couple days and I'm at a loss to add anything more than what's already been said. Shiny will be missed.

To those perusing through his postings, you can search "fluorescent pathway" as well. Even the name of his alt account had creativity.

I can't think of anything else to add either. I just know that I enjoyed reading shining path's posts and he was a Saints fan. Maybe SP can put in a good word for us with the Big Guy.

My sympathies to his family and his friends.

Please post information about charities and such. I would be happy to donate.

Shining Path was truly one of the most intelligent, humorous and respectful posters on this board. We have lost a great member of the community, and a hole exists that can never be filled. RIP Shiny. We will miss you.

Good link. The Global Warming Shtick thread is a perfect example of how he can discuss scientific issues very patiently and simply without condescension. There's just no one else like him.

If I can contribute 1/4 of what Shining Path did in his time here, I'll consider my time in the FFA worthwhile.

Reading/re-reading SP's posts, I still have long way to go.

Just a few memorable quotes from SP I could find. Too many to locate.

Seriously, this shouldn't even be close. Give a woman a flat chest, and she can still be attractive. Give a woman a flat butt, and she can still be attractive. Give a woman a penis? ~ shining path

This would be the "O\/\/nian Heresy", in direct analogy to the Arian Heresy. Plucky little heresy, that Arianism ~ shining path

My extensive experience with interacting with multiple naked women in a hot tub tells me that I just don't have enough experience with interacting with multiple naked women in a hot tub to answer that intelligently ~ shining path

I totally agree. Each of my competitors is going to be shackled with at least one Yeti. ~ shining path

Another charming quote from one of the evolution threads, not from Shining Path, thrown in for old time's sake:

you can't prove something didn't happen unless you see it...

There is no easy way to post a thread like this, but we’ve just learned that our friend Charlie “Shining Path” Bosworth passed away at the end of May. It is perhaps a commentary on our own busy lives that many of us who considered Shiny among our best online friends did not notice that he was no longer posting. It is an oversight that we are all sick over.To the friends he made online, Shiny was a huge part of what made this community special. It’s been a place to argue and to commiserate, but mostly a place to make each other laugh. And for nine years, Shiny, perhaps uniquely, did just that.A lot of silly things about Shiny have become a part of board lore. Things like his high school era pompadour, his encyclopedic knowledge of Bloom County, or his hysterical contributions to classic threads like The Russian Bride Draft or the old Amoeba Art thread on the yellow board. On the serious side, those of us who really valued learning about science came to rely on his patient, thorough explanations of highly technical concepts. We will miss those things, but we will mostly miss our friend. Many of us have developed real, brick and mortar friendships over the years. To my knowledge Shiny never met any of us in person. It is an oversight that we are saddened that we will never have a chance to correct. But Shiny was no less special to us for being most immediately recognizable by his purple Tinky Winky avatar. Despite being “only” an online acquaintance, Shiny had helped many of us deal with harrowing personal crises. When family members became sick or when marriages were in trouble -- whenever things seemed bleakest -- Shiny was usually the first to remind us that laughter was the best medicine. This board encompasses a great diversity of religious and secular beliefs. Shiny has, at times, been a part of the debate concerning those issues. But in this, we hope the community at FBGs can all respond nearly as one. For those of you that believe, we hope you will say a prayer for the Bosworth family. For those that don’t, we ask that you remember Charlie in your way, fondly. We are going to try to reach out to the Bosworth family and will share with all of you any charity that the family identifies for donations.Thanks-Charlie's friends
I looked at the title of this thread for a long time thinking it was schtick. RIP Shinny, it was a pleasure to have known you, even if it was only on a message board.

That's one of my favourite posts around here. LOL @ the 2nd knuckle part.ETA: God I hate the quote limits...

They used to say that if you put an infinite amount of monkeys at an infinite amount of keyboards, that eventually one would reproduce the works of Shakespeare. Now, with the internet, we know that's just not true.
EDIT: Whoops -- turns out shiny didn't make this one up and was quoting someone else.

REntal company didn't seem to care that I had never operated one before. They told me there was a manual under the seat.

I am sure there will be alcohol involved in my yardwork this weekend- is there any way I can kill or seriously injure myself with this thing?

THis is what I am renting- but it just has the regular bucket in front.
I would kill or die to be able to drive one of those things professionally, for 50k a year.
I think if you bought one, you could make 50K a year from work you could pick up advertising on craigslist
I need to drop this scientific rat-race and pick one of those things up. Just looks like silly fun. They're building a deck across the street, so our meeting room looks out onto a construction site containing three or four of those. People get paid for driving those around and pushing dirt? That's the life, bro.
I can't get over the fact that this was shining path's last posting at FBGs. In what could at first glance be interpreted as just a simple affirmation of how fun driving a Bobcat would be, a closer look at his post reveals an introspective and revealing look at our most fundamental understandings of how to live life in the fullest and most meaningful ways possible.

Shining Path left us with one last piece of his cosmic wisdom about what life is really about.

I am deeply saddened by this news. If there was one person who "got" me. It was him. After hanging around these boards for all those years I developed a standard answer that I thought was clever and interesting when anyone would ask me my favorite color.

I was inspired by shinning path to answer for the first time that my favorite color was "shine". People tried to argue it wasn't a color. Whether or not it was an official color or not didn't bother me. It was light. It was the reflection of the light in all things. Whenever I have this conversation with people which is a few times a year, I have shinning path in the back of my mind. Thanks GB.

You are the reflection of light in all things.

I don't really know what to say here - he seemed to be a very accomplished man and to do/know/learn so much while so young and then to die at such a young age is very bittersweet.

Communicating through text is very difficult in the first place, but he was able to make points that elicited thought about topics that I was often not likely to be swayed on. While a lot of folks in this world will cuase me to dig my heels in, Shining Path caused me to think and evaluate my own position.

this sucks...

I just saw this today. :goodposting: He always made me laugh. I had tears in my eyes reading this thread. I was ok again until I saw Fullback Fro's avatar and for some reason it brought the tears back.

RIP You will be missed!!

Came across this while killing some time.

He meant that the US was fools gold in that draft. He swooped in and saved me and my squad (that had a dominant start but was flailing in the mid-rounds) in that competition. The fact that we won by a huuuge margin is no surprise.
