Mid trip update.
Hotel is in Pineville and not Ballantyne as mentioned - I guess they are close though. Hotel is your basic suite - we have 3 of them for 13 people.
The area reminds me of Atlanta. The perimeter around the city and the burbs spread out. Traffic doesn’t seem nearly as bad and obviously in a few days there’s only so much we’ve seen but it feels as close to Atlanta like city that I’ve been to in a while.
Saturday - quick note about the drive - we took the scenic route which wasn’t bad, drove through Dahlonega in GA and stopped at the candy shoppe for the kids. Went from there to Clemson to drive around the campus (3 higschoolers in the group so giving them ideas) and ate at the Esso Club next to the stadium. Thanks to
@bigmarc27 for the recommendation. Big campus that definitely feels like it’s in the middle of nowhere based on the route we took to get there. Saturday night most of the group chilled at the hotel but I can’t sit still in a city I’ve never visited. Wife, I and a few of the kids that were not playing Xbox drove over to Matthews based on Bucky’s recommendation - and there was actually a soccer game going on. If they had some standing room tickets we would have gone but considering I was the only one who wanted to go (they were playing ATLUTD2 and I have season tickets to Atlanta United!) we didn’t want to pay $90 for me to watch minor league soccer. I almost convinced the wife to drop me off and let me watch by myself but no dice. We drove to Moes BBQ and were about to go in but I again got outvoted by the 5 women in the car. We ended up doing cheap Mexican -
- I ordered a pitcher of Mexican beer and ate my weight in chips, salsa and cheese dip to voice my displeasure.
Easter Sunday - we went to the Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden for my parents. It was a nice botanical garden and worth the time/price save one issue and that was something we couldn’t control - the timing of the flowers/trees blooming. A lot was in season but felt like we are a few weeks from hitting peak. My parents loved it and the kids were not as bored as I expected. We had reservations at Tupelo Honey for a late lunch/early dinner. My wife and Mom really like the place and it’s decent food - a little overpriced but they were happy so I was happy.
Monday - went to Carowinds- damn they have some awesome coasters. I had to pace myself a little as a couple of them really got my head swimming but overall a great amusement park - we got a 2-day pass for $70 per person so definitely felt like we got our money’s worth for $35 a day. Plan to head back Thursday to hit the rides we didn’t get to and re-ride our favorites. (Intimidator was my favorite of the ones we rode - Fury is Thursday). Found out after we checked in to the hotel that they have a happy hour with free food and drinks from 6-7 Monday through Wednesday. Free beer? Sign me up. Turns out it was Miller Lite which I don’t mind and I can pound them in an hour. Pretty sure my BIL and I drank a pitcher each - I tip the lady $5 and she brings us a pitcher to take up to the room to watch the NC game - it’s Miller lite but hell, it was cold and free.
Today (Tuesday) - went to the U.S. National Whitewater Center. Carodwinds was fun - this place was awesome. Slap, I think you suggested this and it was a great recommendation- kids absolutely loved it and asked to go back later in the week. We did the family rafting. Obstacle course, rock wall climbing and then the best part was the zip lines. WOW - 100 feet in the air and the worker told us it’s a 1,500 foot stretch through the woods. I was even a little
walking up the tower. We did the figure 8 which went through the woods and then did the ropes course through the trees and to the next run which takes you over the whitewater. I was a little apprehensive going in because of the cost and uncertainty of what we would get done and the kids would be willing to do but even the 9-yr old did the zip line. We got to watch some of the kayak runs of what I assume are Olympians or Olympic hopefuls (they had American flag and their names on the side). Weather was fantastic (actual got sunburned) and the water wasn’t that cold. We had a great day - got back to the hotel for more free beer and chicken wings. I’m exhausted.
One final note - I did get one decent beer while at the Biergarten at USNMC - OMB Copper - planning to try and make it to the Brewery before the week is out.
