Cheap domain hosting (1 Viewer)

MrPhoenix

Ron Paul Soldier
I just bought a domain name that I'm going to use mainly as a place to keep my resume and radio demos on to show to prospective employers, so I'm not looking for much.

But, I'm wondering if anyone here has any ideas on what hosting sites I can use. I need a place that I can post audio on cheaply.

I use hostmonster. No experience with hosting audio, but they're pretty cheap and their customer service has been solid whenever I've had issues.

I use Fatcow. They are resonably priced. First year is $66. You have unlimited disk space, bandwidth, and mailboxes. Their tech support is wonderful.

GoDaddy - $10 for domain.

Sitekreator - free site with template that works fine for what you're talking about.

/thread.

Did some homework and went with Hostgator. Got an unlimited hosting package for a year for $58 with a coupon.

Any updates on cheaper domain hosting? My FatCow has gone up to $110/year + Domain Registration ($15). Looking for a little less! I use my domain mainly for family email. (great thing about having a different last name!)

Thanks!

Set up a site for a friend a few months ago and used GoDaddy. The economy plan was $54 for a year. Unless you need a ton of email accounts (more than 100) or space (more than 100GB), it will do for most simple site/email solutions. Their support is top-notch and have never known their servers to go down, period.

got a promo code email today from GoDaddy for an extra 30% off any new order... promo code: gd4123ba

Stop using GoDaddy, seriously, they are BAD for the Internet.

Rebuttal? How are they good? Don't tell me low prices, they make that up by having a byzantine website that actively steers people towards spending more money, and by having customer service who will sell or enable services having nothing to do with what the customer is asking for on purpose because they can and the people calling in don't know any better. That's ignoring the political side of things, their stance on SOPA for instance.

They supported SOPA and PIPA, even publicly testifying in support of the bill at a House hearing. They were outspoken proponents of the bill, that is until they felt the backlash of people fleeing their service. Then tried to save face by saying they were no longer supporting SOPA, then PIPA, then finally coming all the way full circle and saying that not only did they not support the bills, they were actually opposed to them now. (For those that may not remember, SOPA/PIPA were bills introduced to "expand the ability of U.S. law enforcement to combat online copyright infringement and online trafficking in counterfeit goods." And while that sounds good on the surface, the bills were really bad bills that would have gave up a lot of the safeguards on free speech online (among other things) and would not have worked towards their intended goals in the end anyways.)

Domains:

Namecheap, they are pretty awesome.

Hosting:

Namecheap

Hostgator

Dreamhost

Bluehost
do any/all of your proposed alternatives include the private domain registration? I read that some companies include that, whereas GoDaddy charges extra (a lot extra)
Namecheap offers "Whoisguard" which is their version, for free with a domain registration for a year, and then it's like $2.88 / year after that.

Also, if you ever need SSL (to enable HTTPS for securing your site as a step toward taking credit cards or for user logins, etc.), Namecheap has about the best price for SSL certificates available, under $10 for the least expensive on up depending on your needs.

Another reason not to use GoDaddy - guy loses his $50k Twitter handle because GoDaddy gave away access to his domain account. (PayPal with the assist)

https://medium.com/p/24eb09e026dd

My $50,000 Twitter Username Was Stolen Thanks to PayPal and GoDaddyI had a rare Twitter username, @N. Yep, just one letter. I’ve been offered as much as $50,000 for it. People have tried to steal it. Password reset instructions are a regular sight in my email inbox. As of today, I no longer control @N. I was extorted into giving it up.
From the hacker on how he gained access:
- I called godaddy and told them I had lost the card but I remembered the last four, the agent then allowed me to try a range of numbers (00-09 in your case) I have not found a way to heighten godaddy account security, however if you’d like me torecommend a more secure registrar i recommend: NameCheap or eNom (not network solutions but enom.com)

- I called paypal and used some very simple engineering tactics to obtain the last four of your card (avoid this by calling paypal and asking the agent to add a note to your account to not release any details via phone)
Warning, it does get a bit technical at times, but it's also a great example of how hackers are going about doing things now. They aren't cracking into servers, they are calling customer service and social engineering their way in.

I'm stupid at this, but I do have one website that I built using iWeb (which Apple discontinued). Two things:

1) Is there something similar to iWeb that anyone can recommend? Easy, drag and drop builder for very simple websites.

2) How do I switch who my domain is registered with? I'm using GoDaddy, I find them annoying and expensive.

2) As for the domain name, it's registered for whatever time period you purchased. Just use another company when it's time to renew. Now, if you're talking about HOSTING, you just find another company, and then when you get their DNS (server) info, you apply that to your domain name.

FYI, you can transfer your domain registrar at any time, not just when it is close to expiration. The new domain registrar will just tack year(s) on to the end of your current term. So if you have a domain name with GoDaddy that is good for 2 more years, and you want to transfer it (good for you!), then just go to the new registrar you have chosen (i.e. Namecheap), transfer the domain there. You'll have to pay the transfer fee (which will add a year to your registration). So then you'd be good for 3 years.

Anyone who is looking to transfer domains, Namecheap is doing transfers for $3.98 today:

https://www.namecheap.com/campaigns/2014/moveyourdomainday-feb-5.aspx

Use coupon NCMYDD to transfer your domains at $3.98* and HOSTWITHNC to get 75% off* on your hosting.

Today only, for each domain transferred (.com, .net, .org, .info and .biz) using coupon code NCMYDD or hosting plan purchased (Shared, Business or Reseller) with coupon code HOSTWITHNC, Namecheap will donate between $0.50 and $1.50 to the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

Any updates to this? Been having issues with mine (iPage.com) especially with email (some accounts receiving mail slowly, and others having issues with the account being unable to send and receive altogether frequently.)

I'm thinking of switching, just unsure where to go. I use my domain solely for email, and have a bunch of accounts.

Thanks!

I'm hosting on Hostmonster but not too happy with it so would like current advice as well. Some e-biz, mostly mail

Starting to have more issues with iPage, anyone have any ideas? Money isn't too much of an issue (I am a FFA guy, after all ;) ) just doesn't need to be cheapest or most expensive.

I still LOVE ICDsoft. Starts at $6/mo ($4.80/mo renewal).

Incredibe value, loaded with features, very easy to use back-end, and the best customer service I've ever experienced with any tech product.

Im a reseller, but that link isn't a reseller link because I don't want folks thinking i'm pimping for a profit. It's just that good.

Do they have a limit on number of email accounts on the 'Economy' and is there a limit to the storage for each email account?

Thanks!

I'm not aware of limits on email accounts. If they do I think it's something insane like. You are allowed to allocate your storage however you'd like, fully customizable between accounts. (ie you can give your graphics guy 10GB to handle large files, but cut Forrest in accounting down to 10MB to break his habit of clogging up the resources with pr0n GIFs

That is good. Most of the accounts I have are fine with 500mb, I paid extra on my current host for a total of 2gb because I have more than the others.

I have somewhere around 20-25 accounts, I have them for my family and I tend to make different accounts for stuff rather than trying to sort it. (It's just easy with your own domain - the beauty of an oddly spelled last name!!)

Yah! yeah the spam guard is pretty solid as well, and you can adjust how aggressively you want it to filter. I believe you can customize the filtering for each account independently as well.... again, some folks use the email account stupidly and need lots of filtering. Others are smarter and aren't going to get inundated.

I will look at it a little harder over the next couple weeks. (Busy between now and xmas!!)

Does going thru you increase my price any? If not, send me the link for you; I have no problem getting a FBG'r some $$$.

I appreciate it, but honestly it would require going through me going forward so it's really not worth it for you. I manage a few accounts for close buddies but in your case I'd suggest just setting up your own account. IF you host multiple accounts then set yourself up as a reseller first. Sizeable discounts start after 2-3 hosting accounts IIRC. I host 6 and I think it's something like 40% off.
