Chicago Bears 2013 Offseason Thread (1 Viewer)

It's never too early to start thinking about 2013. What do you think the Bears need to do this off-season to be able to compete in this league again?

Well if you keep Cutler and Lovie Dubbie I will be a happy camper... So you should move away from them if your a bears fan.Bears:Strength-WR (Marshal and Jefferies)RB (Forte and Bush)CB (Solid Coverage)DL (Great Pressure)Weakness-QB (Favre with more failure)OL (dont need to explain)LB (age)You need to look for building the O-Line over the next 2-4 years when possible, you need to look to get young LBs to bring in to mold that are raw while you still have top players at this position, you need to get a new QB and draft any QB that falls to you are your draft position (think Rodgers when he slipped to them late in the first)

7-3 and you're asking when we can compete again? Jeez

Pretty clear what we should be focused on in FA and draft. OL and probably should start looking at linebackers.

Our top 3 priorities to address in FA & Draft are:

1). OL

2). OL

3). OL

4). OL

Okay, that's more than 3 but you get the idea......

Not that we don't have other needs/wants, but we need impact players at all OL positions.

Love this, you don't think its your play calling and QB? On the Chicago O-line thread I showed how Cutler and Rodgers compared. Rodgers has actually gotten sacked/hit more than Cutler. Its just Cutler is a very mediocre QB and mediocre QBs when they don't have 4-5 seconds every snap look horrible and get hit. Also while he does have good targets they need to get someone in a Amendola/Welker role over the middle that can catch everything, this is what can really combat blitzes and what not.Just watched Bears vs Lions GameSo after going through every play Cutler got pretty good protection (3-4 seconds at least) a large majority of the timeOut of the sacks he did have 5, they were when he was scrambling and coverage sacks. I would have to watch again but I believe 1 was just completely bad play calling as the Lions had a sell out blitz with everyone coming except for single coverage and nothing was open for Cutler...In the end O-Line play is being over blown because Chicago thinks they have a Top QB and Top WR grouping so they assume they should be putting up top numbers. Issue is they have a mediocre QB and 1 top WR and the rest is to be desired but serviceable with the right QB possibly.

They clearly need to improve at OT for the offense to make the next step from where it's now. I would expect one free agent if there is one available on the left side. What they do with Gabe Carimi is going to be interesting. I'm not sure they replace him, but they do need to bring him in competition, but will it be a high pick when they just invested one on him? The defense isn't getting any younger, although the defensive line and safeties have some youth. They do need to continue adding youth - whether it's a first or 2nd round pick here - a young linebacker, another pass rusher, maybe a CB would all make sense to me.The WR's still need to be cleaned out - I doubt this is a position where they make a major investment in, but Earl Bennett is being paid way too much as a #3 WR to catch an occasional pass. TE is clearly needed and you can make an argument, with Jay Cutler's concussion history, that spending a 3rd round pick on a QB could be a wise investment.

When you can't block, having top skill players don't matter. They can't run the plays needed to get the ball to these guys.

I would expect LT to get a large focus for outside improvement. RT is the wildcard - do they think Carimi is injured? Do they think they have a bust on their hands? Do they think he'll turn it around with another off-season of rehab on his knee and/or some competition? Do they think that it's just too early to give up on a high pick?I think Lance Louis has done a fine job at RT and Roberto Garza is probably competent enough at Center, but age is a concern there. That leaves 2 (maybe 3 depending on how they handle RT) spots for upgrades. One will be in free agency - I don't think they have a choice but to invest in a free agent, preferably a LT, but these are hard to come by.

I think that's a decent spin on our OL woes. Though I read that Jonathon Scott (a blocking TE historically) has taken the majority of 1st team snaps @ RT this week. Garza has been the only consistent OL on this team. He's no longer anything more than average. But on a very underwhelming unit, average is exciting! Now to be fair, Cutler needs to get rid of the ball sooner. Those that want to compare him to Rodgers, please don't. It would be nice if someone other than Marshall was a receiving threat. Forte needs a little more room to run.... So while OL isn't our ONLY issue on offense, it should be our top priority for acquiring impact talent. Still can't believe they stood by and did nothing with this last year....

Love this, when someone comes into a Bears thread trying to sound smart, only to look like a fool.

What part? Let me guess you think Cutler is a top 10 QB, Hester is a good Slot WR, and your O-line is what the issue is with your team and only if you had an O-Line that could block for Cutler for 5-6 seconds every play then you would be the best team in the league?Could the O-Line be upgraded? Yes, but at the same time they are not the biggest issue with the team like most Bears fans seem to think. Think what you want I was trying to bring in another view as a non-fan of the bears from what I see when I go back and watch their tape. Again not saying there can't be an upgrade as if you look back at my first post I specifically said a weakness is the line but its not the main weakness, play calling and Cutler are the main issue.Have a good day

A Bears offseason thread started by a guy named "greenandgold." Hmmm....
Seriously. I don't particularly care as I'm not a Bears fan, but he's also been known to troll any Ingram/Richardson related thread/post as well. Pretty clear what's going on here.

please don't compare Jay to Rodgers. Cutler is good, Rodgers is HOFer. It's ok, we can win with a "good" QB..

That said, OL and LB my biggest concern

I love how Packers fan start a thread like this and now in the game thread talking about shutting Rodgers for the game so he doesn't get hurt. But Hey, it's not the O-Lines fault is it?

I'm thinking the Bears just need to focus on getting a franchise QB. That should be their #1 priority. It's nice as a Packers fan to have 2 easy wins every year, but sometimes I miss the rivalry too.
