*** Chicago Cubs 2011 World Champions Thread *** (1 Viewer)

Why exactly was Sandberg not hired?
Well, nobody offered Ryno a manager job in the MLB. So it isn't like the Cubs must have done it since the only job he was able to get was the same level job of last year. So I suppose that Quade looked good at the end of last year so they thought he was ready to be a manager but no one thought Ryno was ready yet. Although I am pretty sure no one else though Quade was ready yet. So the decision was about two equal managers and there is no reason to think they should have decided otherwise unless you are just saying the Ryno would have filled Wrigley every game. Since they decided on Quade, I assumed they just tried to win instead of bringing in more fans.

Okay, it is 2012 time.

What do you want done before the deadline and then this off season?

I think it is time to completely rebuild. Get rid of 90% of the veterans. Trade Ramirez, Soto, Kosuke, Pena, Byrd, Baker, Dewitt, Marmol, Marshall, Wood, Dempster, etc... This team needs to clean house and reset. There is enough depth everywhere but starting pitching to bring up and fill out the roster. LeMahieu, Colvin, Castillo, and Campana should be given every day experience.

Do whatever they can to shed themselves of Soriano and Zambrano. Eat whatever salary they need to and go cheap next year. This team is not going to win. They need to see who they can build around.

C Castillo, Clevenger

1B

2B Barney, Marwin Gonzalez

SS Castro, Marwin Gonzalez

3B LeMahieu

LF Colvin

CF Campana

RF Jackson

They have AAAA type outfielders like Montanez, Spencer, Perez, and Snyder to fill out the roster. Ryan Flaherty is playing all over the place at Tennessee with a 901 OPS. He could play a DeRosa type role next year. Vitters looks at least another year away but 1st would be open for him if he looked ready. Depth players like LaHair and Ridling could get a shot at 1B.

The pitching would be a mystery. They probably are keeping at least Garza. Then you have Cashner and what else? Wells? Coleman? The AAA starters have been garbage. The AA starters don't look like they would be ready. They are probably looking at ton of garbage unless they can pry a major league ready young starter or two in trades.

The bullpen would have enough arms it seems but who knows if any will be good. Mateo, Carpenter, Samardzija, Russell, Maine, Berg. AA relievers Dolis and Beliveau could be ready and have decent futures.

Yes it would be garbage but this is garbage anyways. But do you think this team can actually keep enough talent, add a Fielder, and actually contend? I am ready to move on. Only sign a FA if they are short time fill ins or younger with upside. No big ticket 28+ year olds for this team.

Agree or disagree?

5 in a row and only 15 games Back!!!!
I suppose it is time for Quade to play winning ball when it doesn't matter. Can't wait for the reloading of this super team next year. They better be going after Fielder and keeping the pay roll up (CJ Wilson?) if they keep all these guys. Otherwise, what is the point?

Zambrano cleans out locker and says he is "thinking" about retiring. Just heard it on CSN.

Won't happen, but I would love it. THis guy is a nut case.

Just saw on the twitters that Hendry intends to accept Z's retirement.

Cubs ban Carlos Zambrano 30 days

ATLANTA -- Carlos Zambrano has been placed on the disqualified list and will go 30 days without pay and without contact with his team, the Chicago Cubs announced Saturday.

"His actions last night were totally intolerable," Cubs general manager Jim Hendry said. "This was the most stringent penalty we could enforce without a release."

After giving up five home runs in a 10-4 loss to the Atlanta Braves and getting ejected for throwing at Chipper Jones on Friday, Zambrano cleaned out his locker and told trainers and clubhouse people during the game that he was "retiring."

Zambrano's agent Barry Praver told ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney that the Cubs were told within two hours after Friday's game that Zambrano "definitely" wasn't retiring. Praver said Zambrano made private emotional remarks to club staff and returned his things to his locker late Friday night.

The Cubs need to eat the rest of Carlos Zambrano's contract and cut ties with the volatile pitcher, writes Jon Greenberg.

Praver told ESPNChicago.com that the Major League Baseball Players Association will file a grievance on Monday due to the severity of the punishment.

"His actions last night are very detrimental to his teammates," Hendry said. "There's not much worse than running out on your teammates and announcing your retirement."

Hendry said he apologized to Braves general manager Frank Wren for the actions by Zambrano, which tarnished former manager Bobby Cox's night. The Braves retired Cox's No. 6 before the game.

Zambrano was ejected by plate umpire Tim Timmons in the fifth inning after throwing two inside pitches to Jones, the second going all the way to the backstop. The brushback pitches followed homers by Freddie Freeman and Dan Uggla.

"It was uncalled for, the pitch to Chipper Jones," Hendry said.

"I feel that anything at all to detract from Bobby Cox's night other than usual competition is totally intolerable."

Asked if he knew where Zambrano was on Saturday, Hendry said "I have no idea."

Jones said Hendry's comments were "a class move. I appreciated it."

Added Jones: "I like Carlos. I've always liked Carlos. He's an intense competitor. Unfortunately, sometimes that hurts him."

Cubs pitcher Ryan Dempster wasn't so understanding.

"He's made his bed. Let him sleep in it," Dempster said.

"It's not like it's something new."

Outfielder Marlon Byrd said he talked with Zambrano.

"He said that he's doing better today," Byrd said. "That's it."

Asked about Zambrano being placed on the disqualified list, Byrd said: "That's business. They have to do what they have to do."

Cubs third baseman Aramis Ramirez said Zambrano would be welcomed back by his teammates, but only if he made changes.

"If he changes his attitude, he's more than welcome," Ramirez said.

"He's got to think a little bit more. He's one man. It's not just one time. A lot of people have tried to help him. He won't let them."

Cubs pitching coach Mark Riggins, one of the last team members to speak to Zambrano during an in-game visit to the mound, said he didn't see Zambrano's actions coming.

"It shocked me that happened last night," Riggins said on ESPN 1000's "Talkin' Baseball" radio show on Saturday. "For a player to leave a team, that's kind of just leaving us out there hanging and it seems like it's about him and it's not about the team.

"You just can't let your emotions get that far. We're professional people. We're supposed to be able to handle this, whatever comes our way. It's just disappointing. And we all get embarrassed and it's how we handle those situations, I think, (that) shows the character we have."

Zambrano's track record of abnormal behavior is long and well-documented.

He bashed teammates on June 4 in St. Louis, calling them "Triple-A players" after the team lost a 10-inning game on an Albert Pujols walk-off home run. He apologized to the entire team the following day in Cincinnati.

On June 25, 2010, Zambrano had a dugout blowup with then-Cubs first baseman Derrek Lee at US Cellular field. Zambrano was suspended for two days before being placed on baseball's restricted list for six weeks. After he returned to the team on Aug. 8, he went 8-0 in 11 starts. Zambrano also went through eight months of anger-management sessions after the incident with Lee.

In 2007, Zambrano signed a deal adding $91.5 million over five seasons through 2012. He was to earn $17.85 million this season and $18 million in 2012.

Zambrano is 9-7 with a 4.82 ERA in 24 starts for the Cubs this season.

Zambrano's name was mentioned in trade rumors before the July 31 deadline. He said on July 28 he wanted to remain with the Cubs.

"I do want to stay here but at the same point I want this team to make some changes," Zambrano said. "If we want to win here, we need to make some changes. If I have to go, I have to go but I still have the Cubs in my heart."

Casey Coleman is likely to be called up from Triple-A Iowa to start Wednesday in Zambrano's spot. The team will need a starting pitcher for Zambrano's next scheduled turn in the rotation Wednesday at Houston.

Likely flying up to Chicago on the Thurs-Sat leading into Labor Day.

May have an inside track on Cubs Tickets for the Friday Day game... buddy mentioned something like right up against the dugout. Unsure how reliable that is. I have a couple questions:

These are all assuming a 1:20pm Game where applicable:

1) PREGAME : Where's a good spot to go? Will be 2 or 3 guys in early 30's looking to go socialize with a nicely mixed crowd in 20's and early 30's. What time is best to show... etc.

2) DURING GAME: Where's the best spots to sit in the park? Anywhere to NOT sit? I'm a Red Sox fan who's used to having to deal with the intricacies of fenway's seating quirks. Where's a fun spot to sit? Assume money isn't a huge factor but still looking for some degree of value.

3) DURING GAME: What to expect besides a fun, drinking crowd (from what I hear)? Any must do's? Must NOT do's for Wrigley?

4) POST GAME: Where are some good spots to hit in Wrigleyville after a daygame? What about around town? Not looking for anything that requires getting overly decked out and dropping a $40 cover and spending $20/drink. Ideally this is reasonably accessible from Wrigley area via public transport/cab.

TIA guys!

1: Murphys bleachers just outside of center field will fit this bill2: Outside of sitting in the 200 section after row 6 or so(obstructed view) there is not a bad seat in the house. I'm a huge fan of the bleachers(get there early, it's first come first served seating). When it's hot, the girls in the bleachers like to wear close to nothing. Sitting near the field is great way to take in the Wrigley experience 3: Enjoy the game and view. Cub fans are usually pretty relaxed......have fun4: Follow the crowd. Larger places like the Cubby Bear(behind home plate) are always packed. I've always been fond of Sluggers. There are literally 100's of bars within walking distance of the stadium. Have a great time.

Everything you want for pre and post game is within a 2-3 block radius of Wrigley. My suggestion would to go up Clark Street away from the front of Wrigley Field. Tons of bars right up that stripCubby Bear - kiddie corner is OK, but they have crap drink selection.Red Ivy / Goose Island / Sluggers / John Barleycorn are all better options, both before and after. It's honestly as easy as pop head in bar / see if you like it / move on to next bar if you don't because the next bar is only 2 doors away. Seats - try and get lower box or bleacher seats.Food - nothing really special there. Drink - Find a Mai Tai and try it. If you like it, drink those. More bang for your buck IMO.

Good call on Barleycorn

You guys kick ###. Thanks for the feedback. Kinda stoked. I actually dig the franchise and have been kinda jonesing to hit wrigley for a while now so this is a great opportunity. Guy I'm rolling with is a good guy but can be prone to needing a babysitter at tiimes. I'm not looking forward to that...esp starting at 10-11am.

LIke the suggestions on Lower box or bleachers... that's sorta what I was thinking. Either get up on the grass or get out in the drinkin seats. Love the idea of first come first served. someone said 10am is when they open the gates? At a 1pm Friday game do they really pack out 3 hours before gametime?

No idea how the bleachers have been filing up. For weekday games, from what I see on TV, it really doesn't look like it matters when you get there.A Friday game, on a holiday weekend, I'd error on the side of being there early.

If you want to sit right at the wall, you will have to be there as they open the gates. Otherwise getting there an hour early should be ample time to find a pretty good seat. There is always room for 2 more. Bring an old towel to save your seats. Venders do not roam the bleachers, you'll have to fetch your own brews.

:pickle:

My hatred for Hendry became so intense the last few years that I stopped watching games and paid little attention to MLB.

It will be nice to be a Cubs fan again even though they have a long way to go to fix the damage Hendry has done.

question is, who replaces him?

View from my seats Friday

Cubs owners son/daughter were right next to our seats. Front row on the rail right next to the on deck circle.

Soriano is a funny ####er, bantering with the crowd, hitting on one of the girls in our group, asking me to buy him a budlight, etc.

Wrigleyville is fantastic.

Lot of funny posters like these posted around there area. Is there a story to this or is this a one time ballbusting?

Kick ### seats. Had to be a good time.As for the posters, no idea what those are, but I'm glad to see my fellow Chicago FBGs are worried about the whereabouts of Shuke.

I've read that Ryno had a serious problem with the previous GM, which was the only reason that he was not named manager.

That dude is gone.

Sandberg is the favorite to manage the Cubs in 2012.

From what I've read there are still rumors of you guys stealing Billy Beane for your next GM. Is this dead?
The rumors here are all over the place and I am not sure if any of them are true or speculation.I honestly would want them to steal the entire Tampa Ray system including Maddon. I know that can't happen but go to the people you can steal and tell them the fans in Wrigley are present more than any other fans in the game, all of their decisions would be for the best of the team and not about money, and winning as a Cub would be greater than absolutely anything baseball offers right now (since the Red Sox already won). I don't see how that doesn't pull in most candidates when everything points to Ricketts signing checks and staying out of the baseball decisions entirely. Unless of course, they don't want that pressure.
