Not thrilled about the hire, but he has to do better than Solari right?

http://www.kansascity.com/sports/chiefs/story/447546.html

Chan Gailey was hired today as the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator.

Gailey, 56, is a veteran coordinator, having served in that capacity in the NFL with Denver, Pittsburgh and Miami. He also has been head coach for the Cowboys and Birmingham in the World League and in college for Troy State, Samford and Georgia Tech. He was fired this past fall after six seasons at Georgia Tech.

Chiefs coach Herm Edwards was immediately unavailable for comment.

Other candidates for the position included UTEP offensive coordinator Eric Price, former New York Giants coach Jim Fassel and Jacksonville quarterbacks coach Mike Shula.

Gailey will replace Mike Solari, who was fired after the Chiefs had one of their worst offensive seasons in team history.

Untill Herm is fired, this really has no Fantasy relevance. They will attempt to run LJ into the ground and that's that.

Herm sent Saunders, Solari and the rest of a staff that finished with one of the best offensive units in the NFL for 3 years packing.

He's the worst coach currently in the NFL.

So Chan just needs to keep the running plays handy.

Chiefs fans, you'll be sorry. Ask Dallas fans.
His time in Dallas was pretty bad, but his resume as an OC actually isn't bad. All 4 years over 10 wins and he had 3 playoff wins, and those were on teams with mediocre offensive talent. I'm not thrilled with the hire but it could be worse. If he can make Kordell Stewart and Jay Fiedler look like NFL QBs then he can surely make Brodie improve considerably.

A beat writer the 49ers took a look at Chan Gailey's last few NFL jobs. Here is what he wrote:

Steelers O.C., 1996-97

Before Gailey

1995 -- Pass 8, Run 12, Total 6, Points 5

With Gailey

1996 - Pass 27, Run 2, Total 15, Points 11

1997 - Pass 23, Run 1, Total 6, Points 7

After Gailey

1998 - Pass 29, Run 7, Total 25, Points 28

Cowboys H.C., 1998-99

Before Gailey

1997 - Pass 20, Run 20, Total 20, Points 22

With Gailey

1998 - Pass 9, Run 8, Total 8, Points 9

1999 - Pass 24, Run 6, Total 16, Points 11

After Gailey

2000 - Pass 28, Run 12, Total 25, Points 23

Dolphins O.C., 2000-01

ho-hum for this KC homer.....

No OC can make chicken salad out of chicken droppings. When you have one legitimate NFL Off. Lineman (Brian Waters) and only one legitimate starting NFL WR (Dwayne Bowe), and your incumbent QB crop consists of: an oft-injured Brodie Croyle who is a poor decision-maker in the passing game; and a soon to be 35-year old journeyman who, while tough as nails, is almost out of time.......let's just say, your not going to make it much worse. It can only get better.

This situation is all about personnel....and that is why KC will probably be about as bad in 2008 as they were in 2007. Same HC. Same GM. Same QB.

Aren't I a ray of sunshine?

yes, and I am about to join that ray with you!! I don't know how I feel about this as a homer. I guess it cannot get any worse than Solari. Atleast, this guy has experience calling plays, and some reports show that he has done some good things as an OC. Most of the teams he was OC with made it to the playoffs on a consistent basis. Now, that is not to say that he can do it in KC, based mostly on the points made by Ashcraft!! You still need players (and i use that term loosely) to execute even the most brilliant game plan. Without a legitimate Oline, Gailey will not be able to design or execute some of his more creative thoughts.

But like I said, I guess it cannot get any worse than last year.

How do you KC folks this will affect the fantasy outlook in KC next year?

Based on the SF beat writer's info above, will Gailey bring the running game back to respectability and, therefore, LJ's prospects as a RB1 are back to rosy? The Chiefs' rush O was near to dead last in every major category this year.

He should do OK with a vanilla offense like KC. He wasn't terrible in pittsburgh, I think he just gets in over his head when he is in a wide open offense.

Like Kevin said above, a lot depends on the offensive line. I think this hire does nothing to keep teams from stacking the box. Herm likes to run the ball. Gailey likes to run the ball. Everyone knows KC will run the ball. I'm worried that the vanilla offense turns into the predictable run-run-pass-punt.

Interesting. Yesterday on Denver sports radio they were saying that if Himmerdinger (sp?), the Denver OC, goes to Tennessee, that Shanahan would go after Gailey.

Funny.....as a Dallas fan. I am hoping we get Solari to coach our O-line.Chan Gailey is awful. Sorry Chief fans.

I would think, given AT LEAST THREE new OL, the KC fantasy prospects would be as follows.RBsThe emergence of Kolby Smith behind a horrible OL should not be ignored. He simply ran harder than Larry did before the injury. I forsee LJ only getting about 65-70 % of the carries in 2008 and Kolby Smith getting the other 35%. The days of LJ running 400 times are over IMO. I think LJ would probably be around RB 10 still, but Smith needs to be around RB 30-35 because I could see him getting 100-120 carries next season.WRsOf the current crop (Bowe, Kennison, Parker, Webb, Drummond)) I only expect Bowe, and MAYBE Webb to be back. It is tough to say how D-Bowe will be in Year 2, but he got nearly 1K in one of the worst offenses of the last 20 years, so if the offense improves, theoretically his #s may improve as well. I see it just the opposite. I think KC gets a few more weapons and Bowe's #s drop off by about 25%.TEGonzalez has only one thing to play for individually, and that is Rec. Yds by a TE (needs 179), but I expect him to still be a top 5 TE for one more season. He will be 32 next season...and using our Historical Data DOminator, I looked at TG's worst season in his prime, which was 2002, when he had 63/773.At age 32, there have only been four seasons that match that criteria.
Code:
# NAME POS YR AGE EXP G REC RECYD YD/REC RECTD FANT PT1	Shannon Sharpe	te	2001	33	12	16	73	811	11.11	2	93.102	Shannon Sharpe	te	2000	32	11	16	67	810	12.09	5	111.003	Wesley Walls	te	1999	33	11	16	63	822	13.05	12	154.204	Mickey Shuler	te	1988	32	11	15	70	805	11.50	5	110.50
So I am certain Gonzalez is in for a big decline. He will get the last record among TE's, but I would not take Gonzo @ TE1, or even TE4....Those are just some of my random thoughts.......but it is all predicated on the OL being rebuilt around Brian Waters.

Chan Gailey is a seasoned and proven offensive mind. The one thing you can be sure about is he will remain committed to the running game, and his passing attacks will not be very creative (lots of max protect, 2 WR sets). He's EXACTLY what Herm Edwards wants in an OC and, frankly, will be the kind of guy that will frustrate Chiefs fans because he'll be that guy who runs on 3rd and 16 just to get better field position for a punt. This is 100% about whether Larry Johnson can get healthy and whether they can rebuild the offensive line in a hurry. IF they can do both (a big IF I realize), Gailey will give the Chiefs a chance to win plenty of games.

Solari did a good job as our O-line coach, but had one of the most talented and dominating O-lines ever so pretty much anybody would have done the same. That said, I wouldn't have been too mad if he was just demoted back to the Chiefs O-line coach so I would consider him a decent hire.

I was really bummed when I heard Oher is going back to school for one more year, because him coming out would all but ensure either he or Jake Long would be there for the Chiefs first pick which would be a huge step to fixing the line.
