Team Not Waiting For Ty Law

Source: Bob Gretz, KCChiefs.com

Original Article: http://www.kcchiefs.com/news/2006/06/05/gr...waiting_for_ty/

Summary: The Kansas City Chiefs certainly aren't holding their breath waiting for cornerback Ty Law's salary demands to come down. Coach Herm Edwards is confident that the defensive backfield he has in place right now has enough ability. Said Edwards: “What we know is that we have guys back there with a lot of talent. With all of them, it starts with you’ve got to lineup correctly and you’ve got to us the proper technique. I can’t say that enough to this whole football team right now. The guys that figure that out and get it done are the guys that are going to be on the field.”

Personal view: Edwards has plenty of confidence in DB coach David Gibbs, and good coaching may be all that's needed in Herm's Tampa-2 defense. This defense doesn't need true cover corners as much as it needs tacticians capable of reading a play and flowing to the appropriate zone.

The Patriots have reportedly had substantive contract talks with the agent for Ty Law over the past several days.

The Chargers also have expressed an interest, but how current that interest is, who knows. This one seems more editorial commentary by the columnist . . .

Columnist Jim Sullivan notes that GM AJ Smith expressed interest in Law as early as this weekend, and San Diego has $14million in salary cap flexibility to play with this year.
They expressed interest to his agent in April. They just didn't talk about it publicly until this weekend. The main problem I see with signing Law to a one-year $10 million deal like he apparently wants is that Jammer is in the final year of his contract, and they'll have to extend him this year. If Law gets $10 million for one year, it may drive up the number Jammer will ask for.

It would sure help to have Law as a one-year fix, though, while Florence and Cromartie are maturing.

True, but Smith used present tense, he didn't say they "had" interest, he said they "have" interest.

Correct. They have interest, which they expressed to his agent in April.
