With the Stones and Led Zep done, and the album poll finishing up, thought I'd throw out Floyd in the best song thread.

I have a good feeling about which way this will end, but the road there should be a lot more interesting than the ultimate prize.

Thought about having people rank their songs and draw the tourney that way, rather than a pick-as-you-choose, but there probably wouldn't be too many votes under the former method.

So pick the songs you like - covers all Floyd eras (Syd Barrett, post-Syd glory days, and post-Waters)

Voting will end tomorrow (Tuesday) night (may extend if necessary.

Dogs of War is an option? :P I would like to have seen more Division Bell options, but that's me. :D

Voting now...

BTW, you accidently did Goodbye Blue Sky twice. I am assuming the first one was supposed to be Another Brick II.

Dogs Of War is pretty popular, so I included it. Personally, I would have liked to include less of the Momentary and beyond years, but with 60 choices, it opens things up. And I don't think including more from Ummagumma would have added much to the poll.

Actually, I didn't want anyone to vote for Brick.Yeah, I messed up the cut and paste - it's there now if anyone wants to re-vote.

It is? Every Floyd fan I know doesn't care much for it. And I have been on various music forums over the years and Floyd fans on those never seem that fond of it there either. :shrug:But hey, it's your thing. No quibbling from me, just wondering. :)

Agreed. The live stuff from it is really good, but the studio stuff is forgettable.

I think The Hero's Return through The Final Cut from the Final Cut is as good a stretch of music as Waters ever wrote, and I view it as one piece of music.

Ummagumma is a personal favorite.

Yeah, it was tough to single out anything from The Final Cut beyond "Not Now John", but had to figure out something.

And everything, with the exception of Have a Cigar, Welcome to the Machine, Not Now John and the post Waters material.

Winner: Echoes

Good setup, much better than those H2H type polls that knock out some songs too early.

The Ghost of McCarthy,

The memories of Nixon.

And now, adding color, a group of anonymous Latin-

America meat packing glitterati

This is going to end up aggravating me even more than the Zeppelin poll. The worst part is that I can't figure out why I care so much.

I know how you feel. That's why I said it was going to be a fait accompli - will cushion the blow of disappointment.

odd fact

i am a huge gilmour fan, and think waters was kind of a putz

yet i love the final cut

strange....

i think the final cut album is severely underrated

conversley another brick in the wall as a song outside the context of the album is dreadful

i also dislike money

Like him or not, Waters was the main songwriter post Syd and deserves a lot of credit for that.Gilmour was the best musician.

Animals in general is not getting nearly enough love here
It's gotten a fair amount of votes, but I also thought Animals - certainly "Dogs" - would get more. Diehard fans tend to love it, while more casual fans may not like the longer nature of the songs. It's all personal taste.

Could not agree more with everything you said here. I also am not a huge "Have A Cigar" fan.

Long songs generally are not gonna get a lot of votes in polls like this, especially for a band that has so many well-known songs, unless they are rare exceptions that got/get played on the radio, ala the first two parts of Rush's 2112 for example, or were live staples like Shine On.. for Floyd here.

Learning To Fly (17) has six more votes than Echoes (11).

Shoot me now.
This makes me want to cry. "Echoes" may be the best song ever written.
I'm trying (poorly) to keep personal opinion out of my own thread, but I can't disagree.Maybe I'll just have to do a thread on the best "Echoes" version - studio, Pompeii, Gilmour in Gdansk, or any other worthy one.

May not be a popular opinion among diehards, but I also think "High Hopes" is not getting enough votes. That's a terrific, haunting song. I think that may be their best post-Waters effort.

Echoes is great, but I can't call it that great. To me, it is like Yes' Gates of Delirium: it is so epic and sprawling that I can only listen to in full every once in a while. But every time I do is a real treat.

And Zep, with "Ten Years Gone", "In The Light", "No Quarter", etc being shot down prematurely.

Pompeii is my personal favorite. The first time I ever saw that video, I was tripping balls and it was one of the most powerful musical experiences of my entire life. Just a frigging masterpiece. "Saucerful" off that recording also gives me goosebumps every single time.

:goodposting: But I am a huge fan of The Division Bell, so I would have voted for most of the songs from it (had they all or others been included). High Hopes, Keep Talking, Poles Apart, What Do You Want from Me, Lost for Words...all great songs.

And people complain about Rush lyrics. I can't really go with the best song ever thing here.

Totally agree. I think between that and "On The Turning Away" are my favorite Waters-less tunes. Gilmour still very much on top of his game with those tunes.

Sorrow is awesome, too, although the studio version is very lacking. The live version on Delicate Sound of Thunder is beyond awesome, and the Pulse version is very good as well.

Those are the (only) two I voted for of the post-Roger era.

That's true... I do really like the DSoT version of that song. I feel like the three of us should be passing a bong around right now.

I saw it again not too long ago while baked - was definitely starting to get a little freaked out.

Hehe, so true! I also agree that the Pompeii version of A Saucerful of Secrets is killer. That is another song where the studio version is just okay, but live it becomes a beast. Same with One of These Days; I've never been overly keen on the studio version (Gilmour's tone is too heavy and makes it sound too noisy), but love the live versions, especially the newer ones.

i love the combined pigs on the wing (even though the guitar solo joining them was not gilmour!)

7 votes for Atom Heart Mother
Not from me. I love the main theme, but the majority of the song is a bit too out there. I don't dislike it, but given the length of the song, it rarely gets played by me. I do love both Fat Old Sun and Summer '68, though; both of those got a vote from me. I also think a lot of the early Barrett singles are great, stuff that predates the first album ( I do not care for most of Piper): Arnold Layne, Apples and Oranges, Paint Box, Point Me at the Sky, Candy and a Currant Bun, etc.

The suite has grown on me over the years - I really enjoy it now. Although I'll never like "Alan's Psychadelic Breakfast".
