Rookie receiver Davis makes quick impact for Titans
By PAUL KUHARSKY

When the Titans drafted three receivers in April, Coach Jeff Fisher indicated fourth-rounder Chris Davis from Florida State could have the quickest impact.
That prediction looks to be coming true. Davis may be emerging as the primary slot receiver in three-wide formations.
"I'm very comfortable, it's nothing new to me," Davis said. "Coming into the slot is really exciting to me, I think I can do it and make some things happen from the slot. … A lot of the things we're doing here we probably tried to do in college, or something similar to it."
Even so, Davis said he's trying to read the facial expressions of coaches to gauge how he's doing. He'll probably be pleased to hear what Fisher had to say about him.
"We picked his role up a little bit this week," Fisher said. "He made some plays in there, as did Eric (Moulds). That's primarily the reason why we drafted him, is to come in and find a way to get open underneath. He does a pretty good job of that."
The Titans have tough decisions to make at the position, but Davis appears to have sealed his roster spot well in advance of the preseason finale Thursday night.
>b>Another surgery: Defensive tackle Rien Long, who's attempting to come back from an Achilles injury that cost him all of 2006, had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee Monday.
Long will be out "an indefinite period of time," Fisher said.
The setback could put Long's roster spot in jeopardy. The Titans love his interior pass rush skills, but he's been limited all summer as he worked his way back from the major injury, which included some serious complications.
With the addition of Corey Simon, the Titans may not have roster space or the time to wait on Long.
"It is just one more hurdle, it seems like that is always the case,'' Long said. "I'm going to try and get back out there as quick as I can. … I am sure I am on the bubble.''
Long, a fourth round pick by the Titans in 2003, has played in 39 games.
Another Achilles: Rookie defensive end Jacob Ford, out for the season with a torn Achilles, said he was scheduled to get his stitches out today.
"It's difficult," Ford said. "You set out and work hard for something and it's kind of taken out from under you without being under your control. But I'm looking it as more of a redshirt year. I've got a chance to get stronger and be more prepared when I come back next year."
Ford got hurt when he was rushing against a player who was simply standing in as a non-moving blocker in a drill on Aug. 13.
"As I was bending I planted on it and it just popped," he said. "It felt like somebody hit it with a bat."
Good work: Fisher had effusive praise for kicker John Vaughn, who played at Brentwood Academy and Auburn. He was released Tuesday to make room for Simon.
Vaughn led the Titans in preseason points through three games with 12 — 3-for-5 field goals and three PATs.
"John did a nice job for us," Fisher said. "He was very competitive, he kicked, he was consistent on the practice field. It was one of the better races if not the best race we had (at kicker).
"John will surface someplace. He has a few little things he needs to continue to work on, but he was a delightful young man and he worked very hard, was very professional."
Injuries: Running back Chris Henry (hamstring) and defensive end Antwan Odom (hip flexor) did not practice Tuesday, but Fisher said they have a chance to play Thursday night in the preseason finale against the Packers.
Cornerback Nick Harper was pulled out of practice after suffering a thigh/upper leg injury.
Playing time: Fisher said except for a few players, the starters will play through at least one series in the third quarter against the Packers.
