Chromebook -- Highly recommend (1 Viewer)

Dell announces an 11" Chromebook

Now famous laptop and desktop computers brand known as Dell introduced the Chromebook – the Dell Chromebook 11. Have a look on the specs:

  • 11.6-inch (edge-to-edge) display with 1366×768 resolution
  • 4th generation Intel Celeron 2955U processor
  • Front facing 720p camera
  • 802.11a/g/b/n Wi-Fi
  • Less than one inch thick
  • Weighs 2.9 pounds
  • 2X USB 3.0 ports
  • Bluetooth 4.0
  • HDMI out
  • Battery life up to 10 hours
It will be available in two models, one with 4GB of internal DDR3 RAM, and the other with 2GB of RAM. The 4GB version will be available in January 2014, and the other one in the first quarter of 2014. Dell Chromebook 11 is expected to cost under $300.

Great thread - I just bought the Samsung Chromebook. Question: I am looking to buy a Chromebook ready Cloud Printer. Any recommendation? I am looking for a basic, basic 3-in-one model - that is the most easy to configure and setup. Thanks.

New gripe:

My Chromebook is a little less responsive than I would like. I still otherwise love it and am all-in on the Chromebook setup -- I think it's awesome -- but I'd love a top-of-the-line super fast model. Maybe next year.

Acer C720 is perfect for couch based internet surfing. It is super zippy. For $250 new, I could not be happier.
Where did you find this for 250?

I played with the HP 14 today. I find the screen resolution to be terrible. Besides that, it seems very nice though. Thinking I want to go with the 11 inch with the better resolution. Although, is the HP the only data plan one?
Got mine at amazon for 249 - but it looks like they jacked up the price. Blame Drifter.

Help here? Sure somebody has their Chromebook hooked up to a printer

Do you already have a wireless printer? Try the below first. I was able to hook up my older model wireless printer (not designed for Google Cloud printing out of the box) and I've gotten it to work. It's at least worth a shot before you spend money on a new printer.https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/1069693?hl=en

Thanks but I don't have a printer at all. Looking to start from scratch. Would like to stay under $200.

What kind of battery life are people experiencing? What's your brightness setting? What are you getting when watching movies vs browsing the web?

The battery life is the real differentiator. Other features are nice, but not enough to overcome some of the limitations. I saw the 14" at costco and its nice, but so are some of the other laptops they have at a similar price point.

Why is Dell coming out with a chromebook after the holidays? Do they like not selling as many computers as possible?

I don't know if I'll ever bother with another Dell. The last purchase ( a laptop and some crappy pad thing with a neutered win 8 ((which is the only o/s worst than regular win 8)) was so uniformly inferior I send it all back.

I have one of the new Chromebook 14s from WalMart.

Irs white and classy, much like me.

It has 4 gig RAM which makes it pretty perky on the Chrome o/s, running multiple, multiple, multiple tabs and browser windows. And because that is my MO 95% of the time, its almost a dream setup. I use Google Drive and apps for all storage and office functions. The has is only 16 gig hdd or something, but its a screaming fast ssd and I never really use it for storage anyway and if I go gig-storage crazy, usb flash drives are cheaper than the re-draft value of Arian FOster.

Overall, I like it a lot. The wifi and 3g/4g whatever is pretty seamless and allows constant connection, even when I go to a stone age eatery without free wireless. I use it only for office work and internet time wasting/killing (Hi Joe!). Probably a 10/90 split.

THe only real drawbacks are: its weight - just seems heavy when I tote it around. Much more porky then the last couple of 13.3" sub lapnotes or whatever I've had and it does not have a backlit keyboard. THat sucks. It cost them like .04327 cents to add that, but its not even an option.

As a rule, I no longer buy these things without a backlit keyboard, unless it offers unparalleled infinitesimally lower connectivity cost and speed/price performance.

I need to use Skype a lot and have not yet tested it. I also do not know how long the battery will last on the road/in a hipster coffee shop.

Overall I love it, but is=ts design/weight / form factor are much more similar to 15.6s than the 13.3s recently available.I don't do 12" inch screen. Old eyes.

Anyone hear when Amazon or Bestbuy will bestocking the 4GB Acer?

I had the HP 14 for a week and found it to be nice, but a little too big for what I wanted. Hence looking for the 11.6 inch Acer instead

Been looking at these for a few months. Ordering the Acer C720 tonight. 2gb at $200.

Refresh of the Samsung Chromebook supposedly coming next month. Exynos Octocore. 3 GB ram. 12 inch screen with a higher resolution than everything else lately.

Considering this as a birthday gift for my wife. Her current laptop is getting older and she spends 99% of her time on facebook and playing games on facebook. Would this be the way to go for her?

I've got a little extra Christmas money, and I'm looking at the 14" HP model (the newer model - the one in the fancy colors).

It seems as though the folks in this thread that bought it have had it for a few weeks now. Do you still like it? Or has the initial "wow" worn off?

I had it and returned it. I know others in here disagree, but I found the screen to be terrible. I was probably jaded by the reviews I read, but I don't think I have had a computer with such poor resolution in like 10 years.

Besides that it was nice. A bit too big and heavy maybe, but fast and responsive. The free data plan was pretty sick too

I love mine. Use it every day for surfing, Netflix, and casting to my ChromeCase.

And you had one of the new ones, not the original "black case" Pavilion model?

That's what I plan to do with right, right down to the ChromeCast. We havea PC laptop with Office, 500 GB hard drive, and all of that for when we need to do work. The Chromebook would be for casual surfing and streaming.

What's your take on the display?

As I mentioned before, it doesn't bother me at all. I'm obviously not a videophile, and I'm old, so my eyes are bad anyways. But it's just fine for me.

Wish I had seen this before Christmas...I ended up getting the 2 GB ram version of the Acer C720. Very pleased with it though, I have not even picked up my old laptop at all - very convenient, screen seems fine, never any lag even with the google music and 8-10 tabs open at times.

Yes. The new one.

Ok, thanks.

The rumor didn't start until the day I posted it.

No idea when this might come. I'd guess February. We'll see.

The Exynos is fanless, so thats cool. Otherwise the Acer 720's processor is about equally powerful, and a battery sipper.

Mine sucked (display) until I tried changing the resolution today. It looks great now, but really just a tad small on the text for me to read well.

Only complaints are the weight and the lack of a backlit keyboard. THe free included g3 is GREAT. Check emails and come to this site fairly often and never come close to the small bw cap.

Any new updates on the folks who bought the new Acer or HP models?

I'd like to upgrade to a higher end Chromebook -- my Samsung performance-wise is a little dated and the performance isn't that fast, and I think I'd also like something with a slightly bigger screen.

Been looking into getting a chromebook to do some work from home. Anybody use their chromebook for this? Are you able to log in through remote desktop connection?

I've used the Citrix app on my Chromebook for access to my work computer. Works as expected. I haven't really used it much for work since the screen is so small. I prefer my larger laptop for working.

I find myself grabbing the Chromebook more often than the Ipad when I just want to quickly hop on the internet. It's great for sitting around on Sundays on the couch while watching football.

Sounds negatives that I've found:

Can't get Watch ESPN to work on it.

NFL.com only displays their mobile site on Chromebook and I can't get to their full site.
Can you install Dolphin Browser? That has both modes mobile and desktop mode

Played with the HP chromebook 11 at the store just now. Really liked it. Screen is way better than on my Samsung and its faster too. Seriously considering.

FYI In case anyone is interested, Staples has a $100 off in-store PC coupon expiring today and it appears that the coupon works on the Chromebooks that they carry.

Coupon code is 73144 and should be available at http://staples.com/coupons.

Coupon brings some of the older model Chromebooks to less than $100 if you can find them in-store, with some stores offering an additional 10% off for floor models.

As noted, in-store only and to make it even more old school, you won't be able to look up stock or anything online as it appears they have killed all the Chromebook links.

Full details here in this thread at SlickDeals.
