Cleo Lemon . . . tell me about him (1 Viewer)

Tell me a little about this guy. Will he rely on possession WR Booker or is he a deep ball guy for Chambers?

Miami plays the Browns this week who have given up big numbers to QBs and WRs all season.

From the Dolphins website:

"Academic success was always stressed in Cleo’s house while he was growing up. His mother is a professor in the business department at Mississippi Valley State University. His father is a teacher and the varsity basketball coach at Cleo’s alma mater, Greenwood (Miss.) High School.

Married (Cherese) ... Lettered in football and basketball at Greenwood (Miss.) High School ... Hobbies include golf, basketball, spending time outdoors and reading ... Is a member of the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity ... Born August 16, 1979 in Greenwood, Miss."

The problem with Lemon is he is going to be on a short leash and only his a limited amount of time to get things done before the Dolphins see what they have in Beck. Especially since it looks as though Miami is not going to come anywhere near making the playoffs.

Why? He will do a lot of handing off. Value = zero.
Watching the NFL network replay of the Phish/Texans game this weekend, I gotta say that I was impressed with Miss Cleo. I'd seen him before in preseason as well with the Chargers and he looked the same then. His play action fakes are money, especially given Ronnie Brown's recent effectiveness. He looks like he could be a decent QB for those in 2 QB leagues that are hurting for a second starter right now.

I saw him play plenty in NFLE and caught some preseason games. I've been waiting for him to get a chance.

He's doesn't have all these superstar attributes, he's simply extremely efficient and does all the little things well. I was once incorrectly told he's a coach's son. He plays like that, it really fits. I figure that'll make sense to some, others will be like "huh?"

Chet Lemon has to be in the family somewhere.

I don't think he ever took a snap in Europe. He was there very briefly as a third-string QB, but I think the Ravens recalled him before he took a snap. I could be wrong, but I don't think so.Lemon has a good arm and good mobility. He always played very well during the preseason for the Chargers, but he didn't get any playing time in the regular season (which is a lot different, of course). He's got the physical talent to be a good NFL quarterback; but physical talent is a small part of QBing and he's untested overall. It's hard to predict how he'll do. Marty thought highly of him, for what that's worth.

Lemon is the real deal.

Now you have me thinking I might be mistaken.I remember him in NFLE then trying out for both arena leagues and somehow he was on the Chargers. Hmmm

It appears I'm confusing someone with him.I'd swear I can see him playing in NFLE and in preseason throwing 4th Q passes to Ruvell. Guess I'm wrong here, sorry bout that

I found a report that says he was Berlin's third-string QB (behind Tim Hasselbeck and....Todd Husak!) before being signed by Baltimore.

FWIW, I thought he outplayed TGreen in the pre-season. As I recall, it was an open competition through the forst tow games and then Cam^2 gave Green the nod, simply because Green had a "better grasp of the offense" - in other words, it wasn't really an open competition to start with; cam^2 wanted to start the vet regardless of performance. That's my take on it, anyhow.

here's a Dark Phoenix article that I wrote about him in 2005:

Cleo Lemon, QB3 San Diego Chargers

6’2” 226 lbs. – Arkansas State – Undrafted Free Agent (2001)

Passing Stats Att Comp Yards TDS INT Att Yards TDS

Versus Minnesota 14 19 136 1 0 0 0 0

Cleo Lemon is a phenomenal athlete that was a devastating weapon at Arkansas State. He set all ASU passing and offensive yardage records while in college. He is a coaches son and is a very intelligent QB. He tossed a school record 49 TD’s while passing for 7,706 yards at Arkansas State.

Lemon’s greatest asset is his ability to scramble and make plays with his feet. He has a rocket arm and can make all the deep throws necessary to be productive at the pro level. His delivery is spot on, and his mechanics are very sound. He can move around well in the pocket, but is not a running QB. He feels the rush well, and anticipates pressure. His accuracy has been poor, but he is improving.

Cleo was signed to the Packers as an undrafted free agent in 2001. He was released shortly thereafter when he failed his physical because of a lingering knee injury. He bounced around for a while in the NFL, from the Ravens in 2002, to the Chargers in 2003. He did spend some time in NFLE with the Berlin Thunder where he backed up Tim Hasselbeck and Todd Husak. He spent the 2003 season on the Chargers practice squad, and was held as the 4th QB in 2004. It’s interesting to note that he was not put on the PS in 2004. The Chargers felt that Lemon would be signed by another team and they didn’t want to lose him. Doug Flutie was released in the off season and Lemon was promoted to 3rd string. The QB situation in San Diego bears watching. Obviously, the team loves what Lemon can do and are grooming him slowly. With Brees signing his one year franchise tender, Cleo could be promoted to 2nd string as early as next year. Many feel that if Brees has another solid year, the Chargers will trade Rivers thus making Lemon #2. Cleo Lemon is the perfect example of the long shot who’s working hard to make an impact.

In the last five years Lemon has journeyed from Arkansas State through NFL training camps, NFL Europe, Arena Football tryouts, arenafootball2 and finally to the Chargers, where he has advanced from practice squad quarterback in 2003 to fourth string last year to third string.

***snip***

That he has made it to this point is mildly amazing, considering the "windy road" Lemon said he traveled from his hometown of Greenwood, Miss., (about 90 miles north of Jackson) to San Diego.

He played collegiately at Arkansas State, where his senior team in 2000 went 1-10, including a season-opening loss in double-overtime to a North Carolina State team quarterbacked by a freshman named Rivers. The same Rivers whom Lemon roomed with this summer at training camp.

"It's neat now," Rivers said. "We're both on the same team, he's a great guy and we've had a lot of fun together."

They were on opposite sides of the field that night in Raleigh, N.C., in a game both recalled for being played "in a monsoon," as Lemon said.

"Sideways rain," Rivers said. "We threw it 59 times (actually 57)."

Lemon was playing with a partially torn ACL in his knee, which helped prevent him from being drafted the next spring. He missed the 2001 season after undergoing surgery, then signed with Baltimore, which sent him to NFL Europe. He returned home, however, when Berlin put him on its practice squad.

Baltimore released him after training camp that summer, and Lemon spent the fall working as a substitute teacher in Jonesboro, Ark., trying to make ends meet. The next year he was in training camp with the Memphis Xplorers of arenafootball2 when the Chargers, Packers and Dolphins all called in the same week. His first stop was San Diego, and when they made him an offer, he signed. He was on the practice squad in 2003 and then spent last year in the rare role as the No. 4 quarterback behind Brees, Rivers and Doug Flutie.

"It worked out for me and it showed a lot for them to invest that (time) in me and help me develop in this system," Lemon said.

Again, though, the question is what happens now?

"I don't have any doubt he can play in the league," Schottenheimer said. "But you've got to go play. You've got to have a chance to do it."

Lemon, 26, would love for that chance to come with the Chargers, but he understands the odds are against it, at least in the near term.

"A lot of it is timing," Rivers said. "You've got Drew, who had the great year last year, and then I'm here and Cleo's here. We're all young (Rivers is 23, Brees 26)."

Whatever happens, Lemon is drawing a paycheck as an NFL player. He got to play at Lambeau Field a few weeks ago and in less than two weeks he will get to wear a uniform for the first time at a regular season game.

"It's a great time," he said. "I'm still in the NFL. I want to hit the field and I'm confident I am going to hit the field, but just to be in the position I am now, I'm living the dream."

found those parts fascinatingwho would have thought teams would look to arenafootball2 for QBs

What the hell, I'm climbing aboard the Lemon Cart. Just might start him against the Browns this weekend.

Praise be to Shelbyville!
