Coles get full contract guaranteed (1 Viewer)

The New York Jets have guaranteed the $11 million remaining on the final two years of receiver Laveranues Coles' contract, a league source said Friday.

$11,000,000 additional guaranteed when he was looking for a longer contract. I'm sure he is happier at least. As a Coles dynasty owner, I'm happy.

I hear ya, but he will make $5M this year 6M in 2010 and then be a FA entering a season where he will turn 33.Coles does get banged up alot, and im sure he would like one last nice contract with a more guaranteed money.I hope Im wrong, but I think Jet fans have not heard the last of Coles grumblings

This seems more than fair. The guy is a warrior, but he is always nicked up and is not a premiere down field threat. The team was 4-12 last year with 2 wins over the dolphins. Take your money and be quiet please.

 I agree. Coles had the Jets by the balls after that whole Pette Kendall fiasco last summer. Coles is a good player and a respected guy in the locker room, so Im glad hes happy

I'd be a helluva lot happier with a guaranteed 11 mil over two years than with an extended contract that would likely be back loaded with money I'd never see. Someone should show Coles a few of the contracts that players thought were great deals until they were cut after 2-3 years once they got long in tooth and never saw most of the money. Be happy, LC. Don't worry, be happy.

 i think it was pointed out to Coles that a longer contract could look better but, might not be better....

I don't know, it's hard to say how it would turn out. But if I was Coles and I saw guys like Jerry Porter or Donte Stallworth getting $30M total and $10M guaranteed on new long-term contracts, I'd certainly wish I could test the FA waters since I'm considerably better than them.

He may make the same in years 1 & 2 with this new guarantee now, but I can't imagine there will be a strong likelyhood of a lot of high dollar demand for his services as a FA when he's 33.

I bet Coles retires after these 2 years. He seems like the type of player that doesn't need nor want to play until he's 38.

Even at age 33, Coles is such a competitor, I see him getting decent two or three year offers two years from now. Disagree with him retiring in two years.

Coles is one of those players that is a better NFL receiver than many fantasy owners give him credit. He is a locker room leader and makes the tough catch. Think how poor the Jet offense has been with Pennington/Clemens at QB and Thomas Jones at RB. They need Coles. He does not have the game breaking speed, but can make plays.

Coles is 31 years-old as of Dec. Wayne, C Johnson, Housh, and Walker are all within a year of Coles.Moss, Holt, Plax, TO, Ward and Driver are all older.

 I meant would be 33 yrs old when the two year guaranteed contract is up, but didn't say it clearly. Thanks!

From the Coles player page here at FBG:

HT: 5-11, WT: 192, Born: 12-29-1977, College: Florida State, Drafted: Round 3

What stuck out to me was how Coles was a productive receiver every year except his last in Washington. Even last year, one that many consider a disappointment, Coles averaged five catches for 60 yards and .5 TDs a game. Coles had six of the Jet passing TDs.

Also, I noticed that Kellen Clemens, a sleeper for some this year, averaged a meager 6.1 yards per pass attempt. Pennington was a little better at 6.8, even with the question of arm strength.

Clemens wasn't playing with a full deck for the most part. Coles was banged up/out for a majority of the 2nd half of the year. Cotchery also had some health issues. He was throwing to stone hands mccariens (good riddance, finally) and the underdeveloped Brad Smith. He also had a very bad O-line(as did pennington) I'm not saying Clemens is a lock to produce, but i don't think last year should be considered a fair evaluation period for a a guy seeing his first playing time.
