that Coles is happy?
Reports I heard were he wanted a new contract, he was unhappy even when there were talks the Jets would guarantee the last 2 years of his contract.I was half joking, but will be curious to see if he is happy, meaning Jet fans will not hear another word about his contract again this season.that Coles is happy?
to people who don't like guaranteed money.
I hear ya, but he will make $5M this year 6M in 2010 and then be a FA entering a season where he will turn 33.Coles does get banged up alot, and im sure he would like one last nice contract with a more guaranteed money.I hope Im wrong, but I think Jet fans have not heard the last of Coles grumblingsThe New York Jets have guaranteed the $11 million remaining on the final two years of receiver Laveranues Coles' contract, a league source said Friday. $11,000,000 additional guaranteed when he was looking for a longer contract. I'm sure he is happier at least. As a Coles dynasty owner, I'm happy.
This seems more than fair. The guy is a warrior, but he is always nicked up and is not a premiere down field threat. The team was 4-12 last year with 2 wins over the dolphins. Take your money and be quiet please.
Couch Potato said:I'd be a helluva lot happier with a guaranteed 11 mil over two years than with an extended contract that would likely be back loaded with money I'd never see. Someone should show Coles a few of the contracts that players thought were great deals until they were cut after 2-3 years once they got long in tooth and never saw most of the money. Be happy, LC. Don't worry, be happy.
Even at age 33, Coles is such a competitor, I see him getting decent two or three year offers two years from now. Disagree with him retiring in two years.I bet Coles retires after these 2 years. He seems like the type of player that doesn't need nor want to play until he's 38.
Coles is 31 years-old as of Dec. Wayne, C Johnson, Housh, and Walker are all within a year of Coles.Moss, Holt, Plax, TO, Ward and Driver are all older.Even at age 33, Coles is such a competitor, I see him getting decent two or three year offers two years from now. Clemens wasn't playing with a full deck for the most part. Coles was banged up/out for a majority of the 2nd half of the year. Cotchery also had some health issues. He was throwing to stone hands mccariens (good riddance, finally) and the underdeveloped Brad Smith. He also had a very bad O-line(as did pennington) I'm not saying Clemens is a lock to produce, but i don't think last year should be considered a fair evaluation period for a a guy seeing his first playing time. From the Coles player page here at FBG:
Also, I noticed that Kellen Clemens, a sleeper for some this year, averaged a meager 6.1 yards per pass attempt. Pennington was a little better at 6.8, even with the question of arm strength.
