Colts are only the 4th team to win more games the (1 Viewer)

I found this stat to be interesting. I know it holds little weight this year as the Patriots are the best team ever in organized sports. But, I thought it would be something interesting to consider.

To win more games the season following a superbowl win. And the previous 3 were all repeat World Champions

Pittsburgh Steelers

1974: Won Super Bowl IX (10-3-1)

1975: Won Super Bowl X (12-2)

San Francisco 49ers

1988: Won Super Bowl XXIII (10-6)

1989: Won Super Bowl XXIV (14-2)

Denver Broncos

1997: Won Super Bowl XXXII (12-4)

1998: Won Super Bowl XXXIII (14-2)

Indianapolis Colts

2006: Won Super Bowl XLI (12-4)

2007: (???) (13-3/14-2)

The problem for the Colts is . . . *surprise!* the Pats.

In each of the three other instances, the repeating SB champ had either the best record in their conference, or the best in the league. The Colts obviously don't this year, which is no surprise given how much of an outlier the Pats' season has been anyway.

I think that people are grossly misunderestimating how difficult the Patriots road to the title is. I've been as big a critic of New England around here as any in the last 5 years, but I'll say this: if they win the SB this season, they will have earned every last bit of it . I imagine that getting Jacksonville, then Indy, then Dallas or Green Bay is going to test them. They're still the odds-on favorite, but that is a much tougher row to hoe then they've had in years past.

Agreed.

similarly, i think folks are grossly underestimating the quality of this colts team. typically, any defending champion that sits at 13-2 with one game to play would dominate the media attention and would be the team to watch. instead they are flying under the radar thanks to the patriots. to think they've done it with the incredible run of injuries they've endured is astounding. they are my pick to win it all.

Agreed again. The fact that their rematch - if it comes to pass - will be played in Foxboro will be huge, but oddly enough I'm not sure that that helps the Pats all that much given the fact that the one weakness Brady has repeatedly demonstrated is that he's a poor bad weather QB.

Agreed. I think the Colts will win the Super Bowl, just as I think they'll host the AFC Championship game (barring a Titans upset of the Chargers, which could happen).

I'm not sure that I agree with the last part. The 2004 Pats had to play:The 12-4 ColtsThe 15-1 Steelers ON THE ROADThe 13-3 EaglesThat's hardly chopped liver.

Picking the Jags to beat the Pats in round 2 in Foxborough?

sample size of 3 makes this stat pretty meaningless. Also, in how many of those years did the team not have the best record in their conference?

I f the Jags pick off the Pats... then they shouldn't have any trouble against Indy... Jax knows the Colts better than anyone.

Are you serious? The Colts have owned the Jags for years now. This is year is no different. The jags may play the Colts tough but they never finish the job......

I guess the 44-17 thrashing they gave the Colts last December never happened.

They played two choker QBs and an overachieving Steelers team.

I'd said they finished the job when they played last December.
Oops forgot about that one  . Regardless, THIS season the Colts are 2-0 against the Jags and I'm not sure why all of a sudden they "wouldn't have any trouble against Indy" in the playoffs.....

Thank you... ; I'm sure next we'll hear is that it was Dec and the Colts were tried..

If they beat the Pats... they will be pretty feared by the rest of the league.

Two choker QBs who won Super Bowl rings in the next two years. This was not an easy road. That being said, as a Pats fan I am concerned about the playoffs. The Colts, the Jags and (if they play absolute best) San Diego all could win the Super Bowl this season. And should the Pats be good enough (and yeah, it's the playoffs: lucky enough) to make the SB, don't think the Cowboys won't be licking their chops at revenge. Tough road this year.

The Colts are really flying under the radar right now. The hot pick for everyone is the Jags but what have they really done yet? They beat a very overrated Steeler team on the road and now they're the sexy pick. This team has lost twice to the Colts and you think that the Colts fear them? If the 2 teams happen to meet again, I don't think the Jags will walk into Indy's house and manhandle them as you seem to be implying.....

Not a Colts fan so I have no reason to make excuses for them.

There's no excuses needed for the Colts. This year they beat Jacksonville 29-7 on the road and 28-25 at home. It's the Jags fans who need to be rationalizing away the results here.

Let me also add that the only team I believe can go to Foxboro and win is the the Chargers... LT is still the best player in the league and the team is hitting its peak NOW. I really don't see Jags or Colts going to Foxboro and winning.

LOL at people talking trash about the lone Jags win against the better Colts. The Colts own the Jags.

Yes, I can easily see the Jags coming to Indy and walking all over the Colts. Hell, my sig even shows what was said earlier in the year by someone right before the Colts smoked Jacksonville.

Are you serious? Yes, it is possible that Tomlinson could run all over NE's average run defense, but even with him doing that in the divisional round last January, the Chargers still couldn't beat the Patriots, and that game was in San Diego, not to mention that this year's Patriots is a lot better than last year's Patriots team. I am not saying the Chargers have no shot, but they would need a lot of breaks and a lot of things to go their way to win in New England this January.

I don't think anyone say the Jags would walk all over the Colts, but the Jags did only lose by 3 there a few weeks ago, and that was in a game where several crucial and controversial calls went the Colts way. I would pick the Colts if they played in the playoffs, but the Jags could certainly beat them.

The Steelers weren't an overachieving team...they just got in a funk during the playoffs. In the middle of the regular season the Steelers were on fire...beat the Eagles and Pats in back to back weeks (both Superbowl teams) very soundly. Eagles and Pats were both playing good ball at the time and the Steelers were on fire. Timing is everything.

I don't think the loss of Freeney and potentially the loss/limitation of Harrison, etc. will really be evident until the playoffs start. It's going to be extremely tough for the Colts to make it back to the Super Bowl due to their injury situation.

Agreed. With a 90+% healthy Harrison the Colts are dangerous.Without, they are a tough out.

As I recall; NE was very lucky that game... in the 4th quarter, SD forgot they had that LT guy and start tossing incomplete passes w/ a 7+ pt lead and then there was the Troy Brown play.

1. Pats are the best team ever

Garred,Rivers,Young,Anderson beating Brady in New England this year not going to happen.

Pittsburgh is just not playing at the level it will take to beat New England.

Colts without Harrison and freeny and others have very little chance this year against the pats. Harrsion coming back would help, but i still do not think its enough.

Pats are in the drivers seat this year with one sweet ride...
